A Configurable Transport Layer for CAF
The message-driven nature of actors lays a foundation for developing scalable
and distributed software. While the actor itself has been thoroughly modeled,
the message passing layer lacks a common definition. Properties and guarantees
of message exchange often shift with implementations and contexts. This adds
complexity to the development process, limits portability, and removes
transparency from distributed actor systems.
In this work, we examine actor communication, focusing on the implementation
and runtime costs of reliable and ordered delivery. Both guarantees are often
based on TCP for remote messaging, which mixes network transport with the
semantics of messaging. However, the choice of transport may follow different
constraints and is often governed by deployment. As a first step towards
re-architecting actor-to-actor communication, we decouple the messaging
guarantees from the transport protocol. We validate our approach by redesigning
the network stack of the C++ Actor Framework (CAF) so that it allows to combine
an arbitrary transport protocol with additional functions for remote messaging.

A Multilevel Approach to Topology-Aware Collective Operations in Computational Grids
The efficient implementation of collective communiction operations has
received much attention. Initial efforts produced "optimal" trees based on
network communication models that assumed equal point-to-point latencies
between any two processes. This assumption is violated in most practical
settings, however, particularly in heterogeneous systems such as clusters of
SMPs and wide-area "computational Grids," with the result that collective
operations perform suboptimally. In response, more recent work has focused on
creating topology-aware trees for collective operations that minimize
communication across slower channels (e.g., a wide-area network). While these
efforts have significant communication benefits, they all limit their view of
the network to only two layers. We present a strategy based upon a multilayer
view of the network. By creating multilevel topology-aware trees we take
advantage of communication cost differences at every level in the network. We
used this strategy to implement topology-aware versions of several MPI
collective operations in MPICH-G2, the Globus Toolkit[tm]-enabled version of
the popular MPICH implementation of the MPI standard. Using information about
topology provided by MPICH-G2, we construct these multilevel topology-aware
trees automatically during execution. We present results demonstrating the
advantages of our multilevel approach by comparing it to the default
(topology-unaware) implementation provided by MPICH and a topology-aware

Performance evaluation of multi-core multi-cluster architecture
A multi-core cluster is a cluster composed of numbers of nodes where each node has a number of processors, each with more than one core within each single chip. Cluster nodes are connected via an interconnection network. Multi-cored processors are able to achieve higher performance without driving up power consumption and heat, which is the main concern in a single-core processor. A general problem in the network arises from the fact that multiple messages can be in transit at the same time on the same network links. This paper considers the communication latencies of a multi-core multi-cluster architecture will be investigated using simulation experiments and measurements under various working conditions
MPICH-G2: A Grid-Enabled Implementation of the Message Passing Interface
Application development for distributed computing "Grids" can benefit from
tools that variously hide or enable application-level management of critical
aspects of the heterogeneous environment. As part of an investigation of these
issues, we have developed MPICH-G2, a Grid-enabled implementation of the
Message Passing Interface (MPI) that allows a user to run MPI programs across
multiple computers, at the same or different sites, using the same commands
that would be used on a parallel computer. This library extends the Argonne
MPICH implementation of MPI to use services provided by the Globus Toolkit for
authentication, authorization, resource allocation, executable staging, and
I/O, as well as for process creation, monitoring, and control. Various
performance-critical operations, including startup and collective operations,
are configured to exploit network topology information. The library also
exploits MPI constructs for performance management; for example, the MPI
communicator construct is used for application-level discovery of, and
adaptation to, both network topology and network quality-of-service mechanisms.
We describe the MPICH-G2 design and implementation, present performance
results, and review application experiences, including record-setting

Design and Evaluation of a Collective IO Model for Loosely Coupled Petascale Programming
Loosely coupled programming is a powerful paradigm for rapidly creating
higher-level applications from scientific programs on petascale systems,
typically using scripting languages. This paradigm is a form of many-task
computing (MTC) which focuses on the passing of data between programs as
ordinary files rather than messages. While it has the significant benefits of
decoupling producer and consumer and allowing existing application programs to
be executed in parallel with no recoding, its typical implementation using
shared file systems places a high performance burden on the overall system and
on the user who will analyze and consume the downstream data. Previous efforts
have achieved great speedups with loosely coupled programs, but have done so
with careful manual tuning of all shared file system access. In this work, we
evaluate a prototype collective IO model for file-based MTC. The model enables
efficient and easy distribution of input data files to computing nodes and
gathering of output results from them. It eliminates the need for such manual
tuning and makes the programming of large-scale clusters using a loosely
coupled model easier. Our approach, inspired by in-memory approaches to
collective operations for parallel programming, builds on fast local file
systems to provide high-speed local file caches for parallel scripts, uses a
broadcast approach to handle distribution of common input data, and uses
efficient scatter/gather and caching techniques for input and output. We
describe the design of the prototype model, its implementation on the Blue
Gene/P supercomputer, and present preliminary measurements of its performance

PCODE: an efficient and reliable collective communication protocol for unreliable broadcast domain
Existing programming environments for clusters are typically built on top of a point-to-point communication layer (send and receive) over local area networks (LANs) and, as a result, suffer from poor performance in the collective communication part. For example, a broadcast that is implemented using a TCP/IP protocol (which is a point-to-point protocol) over a LAN is obviously inefficient as it is not utilizing the fact that the LAN is a broadcast medium. We have observed that the main difference between a distributed computing paradigm and a message passing parallel computing paradigm is that, in a distributed environment the activity of every processor is independent while in a parallel environment the collection of the user-communication layers in the processors can be modeled as a single global program. We have formalized the requirements by defining the notion of a correct global program. This notion provides a precise specification of the interface between the transport layer and the user-communication layer. We have developed PCODE, a new communication protocol that is driven by a global program and proved its correctness.
We have implemented the PCODE protocol on a collection of IBM RS/6000 workstations and on a collection of Silicon Graphics Indigo workstations, both communicating via UDP broadcast. The experimental results we obtained indicate that the performance advantage of PCODE over the current point-to-point approach (TCP) can be as high as an order of magnitude on a cluster of 16 workstations
DART-MPI: An MPI-based Implementation of a PGAS Runtime System
A Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) approach treats a distributed
system as if the memory were shared on a global level. Given such a global view
on memory, the user may program applications very much like shared memory
systems. This greatly simplifies the tasks of developing parallel applications,
because no explicit communication has to be specified in the program for data
exchange between different computing nodes. In this paper we present DART, a
runtime environment, which implements the PGAS paradigm on large-scale
high-performance computing clusters. A specific feature of our implementation
is the use of one-sided communication of the Message Passing Interface (MPI)
version 3 (i.e. MPI-3) as the underlying communication substrate. We evaluated
the performance of the implementation with several low-level kernels in order

Integration of mobile wireless consumer devices into the Grid initially seems unlikely due to limitation such as CPU performance,small secondary storage, heightened battery consumption sensitivity and unreliable low-bandwidth communication. The current grid architecture and algorithm also do not take into account the mobile computing environment since mobile devices have not been seriously considered as valid computing resources or interfaces in grid communities.
