    Techno-Economic Analysis of Rural 4th Generation Biomass District Heating

    Biomass heating networks provide renewable heat using low carbon energy sources. They can be powerful tools for economy decarbonization. Heating networks can increase heating efficiency in districts and small size municipalities, using more efficient thermal generation technologies, with higher efficiencies and with more efficient emissions abatement technologies. This paper analyzes the application of a biomass fourth generation district heating, 4GDH (4th Generation Biomass District Heating), in a rural municipality. The heating network is designed to supply 77 residential buildings and eight public buildings, to replace the current individual diesel boilers and electrical heating systems. The development of the new fourth district heating generation implies the challenge of combining using low or very low temperatures in the distribution network pipes and delivery temperatures in existing facilities buildings. In this work biomass district heating designs based on third and fourth generation district heating network criteria are evaluated in terms of design conditions, operating ranges, effect of variable temperature operation, energy efficiency and investment and operating costs. The Internal Rate of Return of the different options ranges from 6.55% for a design based on the third generation network to 7.46% for a design based on the fourth generation network, with a 25 years investment horizon. The results and analyses of this work show the interest and challenges for the next low temperature DH generation for the rural area under analysis

    A QoS-Driven ISP Selection Mechanism for IPv6 Multi-homed Sites

    A global solution for the provision of QoS in IPng sites must include ISP selection based on per-application requirements. In this article we present a new site-local architecture for QoS-driven ISP selection in multi-homed domains, performed in a per application basis. This architecture proposes the novel use of existent network services, a new type of routing header, and the modification of address selection mechanisms to take into account QoS requirements. This proposal is an evolution of current technology, and therefore precludes the addition of new protocols, enabling fast deployment.     Research Resources for Network Application Studies

    The growth of computer networks has led to increasing diversity of Internet applications, including streaming media and network games. However, without precise information on how network and system improvements benefit the networked application user, it is difficult to properly assess the benefits of new network treatments or to design the next generation networks that will effectively support the QoS of emerging applications. This research attempts to bridge this gap in understanding with three innovative projects: 1) integrating measures of network performance with user perception; 2) quality of service for network games; and 3) perceived quality of adaptive streaming media repair. With the requested research resources, we have developed an application performance studies laboratory that allows us to finely control network performance for a range of selected networked applications. Each project shares research resources in the new laboratory to measure performance for interactive applications, network games and streaming media repair, as appropriate

    An Approach for Reliably Investigating Hippocampal Sharp Wave-Ripples In Vitro

    Among the various hippocampal network patterns, sharp wave-ripples (SPW-R) are currently the mechanistically least understood. Although accurate information on synaptic interactions between the participating neurons is essential for comprehensive understanding of the network function during complex activities like SPW-R, such knowledge is currently notably scarce. counterpart. We show that slice storage in the interface chamber close to physiological temperature is the required condition to preserve network integrity that is necessary for the generation of SPW-R. Moreover, we demonstrate the utility of our method for studying synaptic and network properties of SPW-R, using electrophysiological and imaging methods that can only be applied in the submerged system.The approach presented here demonstrates a reliable and experimentally simple strategy for studying hippocampal sharp wave-ripples. Given its utility and easy application we expect our model to foster the generation of new insight into the network physiology underlying SPW-R

    Toward Third Generation Internet Desktop Grids

    Projects like SETI@home and Folding@home have popularized Internet Desktop Grid (IDG) computing. The first generation of IDG projects scalled to millions of participatings but was dedicated to a specific application. BOINC, United Device and XtremWeb belong to a second generation of IDG platforms. Their architecture was designed to accommodate many applications but has drawbacks like limited security and a centralized architecture. In this paper we present a new design for Internet Desktop Grid, following a layered approach. The new architecture establishes an overlay network, giving the participating nodes direct communication capabilities. From that basis many key mechanisms of IDG can be implemented using existing cluster tools and extra IDG specificic software. As a proof of concept, we run a bioinformatic application on a third generation IDG, based on a connectivity service (PVC), an existing job scheduler (Condor), a high performance data transport service (Bittorent) and a custom result certification mechanism
