Secondary predication in Russian
The paper makes two contributions to semantic typology of secondary predicates. It provides an explanation of the fact that Russian has no resultative secondary predicates, relating this explanation to the interpretation of secondary predicates in English. And it relates depictive secondary predicates in Russian, which usually occur in the instrumental case, to other uses of the instrumental case in Russian, establishing here, too, a difference to English concerning the scope of the secondary predication phenomenon
On Properties of Update Sequences Based on Causal Rejection
We consider an approach to update nonmonotonic knowledge bases represented as
extended logic programs under answer set semantics. New information is
incorporated into the current knowledge base subject to a causal rejection
principle enforcing that, in case of conflicts, more recent rules are preferred
and older rules are overridden. Such a rejection principle is also exploited in
other approaches to update logic programs, e.g., in dynamic logic programming
by Alferes et al. We give a thorough analysis of properties of our approach, to
get a better understanding of the causal rejection principle. We review
postulates for update and revision operators from the area of theory change and
nonmonotonic reasoning, and some new properties are considered as well. We then
consider refinements of our semantics which incorporate a notion of minimality
of change. As well, we investigate the relationship to other approaches,
showing that our approach is semantically equivalent to inheritance programs by
Buccafurri et al. and that it coincides with certain classes of dynamic logic
programs, for which we provide characterizations in terms of graph conditions.
Therefore, most of our results about properties of causal rejection principle
apply to these approaches as well. Finally, we deal with computational
complexity of our approach, and outline how the update semantics and its

Expressive Policy Analysis with Enhanced System Dynamicity
Despite several research studies, the effective analysis of policy based systems remains a significant challenge. Policy analysis should at least (i) be expressive (ii) take account of obligations and authorizations, (iii) include a dynamic system model, and (iv) give useful diagnostic information. We present a logic-based policy analysis framework which satisfies these requirements, showing how many significant policy-related properties can be analysed, and we give details of a prototype implementation. On abduction and answer generation through constrained resolution
Recently, extensions of constrained logic programming and constrained resolution for theorem proving have been introduced, that consider constraints, which are interpreted under an open world assumption. We discuss relationships between applications of these approaches for query answering in knowledge base systems on the one hand and abduction-based hypothetical reasoning on the other hand. We show both that constrained resolution can be used as an operationalization of (some limited form of) abduction and that abduction is the logical status of an answer generation process through constrained resolution, ie., it is an abductive but not a deductive form of reasoning
Disjunctive Logic Programs with Inheritance
The paper proposes a new knowledge representation language, called DLP<,
which extends disjunctive logic programming (with strong negation) by
inheritance. The addition of inheritance enhances the knowledge modeling
features of the language providing a natural representation of default
reasoning with exceptions.
A declarative model-theoretic semantics of DLP< is provided, which is shown
to generalize the Answer Set Semantics of disjunctive logic programs.
The knowledge modeling features of the language are illustrated by encoding
classical nonmonotonic problems in DLP<.
The complexity of DLP< is analyzed, proving that inheritance does not cause
any computational overhead, as reasoning in DLP< has exactly the same
complexity as reasoning in disjunctive logic programming. This is confirmed by
the existence of an efficient translation from DLP< to plain disjunctive logic
programming. Using this translation, an advanced KR system supporting the DLP<
language has been implemented on top of the DLV system and has subsequently

Approaches to abductive reasoning : an overview
Abduction is a form of non-monotonic reasoning that has gained increasing interest in the last few years. The key idea behind it can be represented by the following inference rule frac{varphirightarrowomega,}{varphi}omega, i.e., from an occurrence of omega and the rule "varphi implies omega';, infer an occurrence of varphi as a plausible hypothesis or explanation for omega. Thus, in contrast to deduction, abduction is as well as induction a form of "defeasible'; inference, i.e., the formulae sanctioned are plausible and submitted to verification. In this paper, a formal description of current approaches is given. The underlying reasoning process is treated independently and divided into two parts. This includes a description of methods for hypotheses generation and methods for finding the best explanations among a set of possible ones. Furthermore, the complexity of the abductive task is surveyed in connection with its relationship to default reasoning. We conclude with the presentation of applications of the discussed approaches focusing on plan recognition and plan generation
Multi-agent planning using an abductive : event calculus
Temporal reasoning within distributed Artificial Intelligence Systems is faced with the problem of concurrent streams of action. Well known, logic-based systems using the SITUATION CALCULUS solve the frame problem in a purely linear manner. Recent research, however, has revealed that the EVENT CALCULUS under the abduction principle is capable of nonlinear planning. In this report, we present a planning service module which incorporates this approach into a constraint logic framework and even allows a notion of strong nonlinearity. The work includes the axiomatisation of appropriate versions of the EVENT CALCULUS, the development of a suitably sound and complete proof procedure that supports abduction and the implementation of both of these layers on the constraint platform OZ. We demonstrate prototypically how this module, EVE, can be integrated into an existing multi-agent architecture and evaluate the behaviour of such agents within an application domain, the loading dock scenario
