Nearest Neighbour Decoding and Pilot-Aided Channel Estimation in Stationary Gaussian Flat-Fading Channels
We study the information rates of non-coherent, stationary, Gaussian,
multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) flat-fading channels that are achievable
with nearest neighbour decoding and pilot-aided channel estimation. In
particular, we analyse the behaviour of these achievable rates in the limit as
the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tends to infinity. We demonstrate that nearest
neighbour decoding and pilot-aided channel estimation achieves the capacity
pre-log - which is defined as the limiting ratio of the capacity to the
logarithm of SNR as the SNR tends to infinity - of non-coherent multiple-input
single-output (MISO) flat-fading channels, and it achieves the best so far
known lower bound on the capacity pre-log of non-coherent MIMO flat-fading
channels.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. To be presented at the IEEE International

Orthogonal or superimposed pilots? A rate-efficient channel estimation strategy for stationary MIMO fading channels
©IEEE, 2017This paper considers channel estimation for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels and revisits two competing concepts of including training data into the transmit signal, namely orthogonal pilot (OP) that periodically transmits alternating pilot-data symbols, and superimposed pilot (SP) that overlays pilot-data symbols over time. We investigate rates achievable by both schemes when the channel undergoes time-selective bandlimited fading and analyze their behaviors with respect to the MIMO dimension and fading speed. By incorporating the multiple-antenna factors, we demonstrate that the widely-known trend, in which the OP is superior to the SP in the regimes of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and slow-fading, and vice-versa, does not hold in general. As the number of transmit antennas (nt) increases, the range of operable fading speeds for the OP is significantly narrowed due to limited time resources for channel estimation and insufficient fading samples, which results in the SP being competitive in wider speed and SNR ranges. For a sufficiently small nt, we demonstrate thatas the fading variation becomes slower, the estimation quality for the SP can be superior to that for the OP. In this case, the SP outperforms the OP in the slow-fading regime due to full utilization of time for data transmission
A Rate-Splitting Approach to Fading Channels with Imperfect Channel-State Information
As shown by M\'edard, the capacity of fading channels with imperfect
channel-state information (CSI) can be lower-bounded by assuming a Gaussian
channel input with power and by upper-bounding the conditional entropy
by the entropy of a Gaussian random variable with variance
equal to the linear minimum mean-square error in estimating from
. We demonstrate that, using a rate-splitting approach, this lower
bound can be sharpened: by expressing the Gaussian input as the sum of two
independent Gaussian variables and and by applying M\'edard's lower
bound first to bound the mutual information between and while
treating as noise, and by applying it a second time to the mutual
information between and while assuming to be known, we obtain a
capacity lower bound that is strictly larger than M\'edard's lower bound. We
then generalize this approach to an arbitrary number of layers, where
is expressed as the sum of independent Gaussian random variables of
respective variances , summing up to . Among
all such rate-splitting bounds, we determine the supremum over power
allocations and total number of layers . This supremum is achieved
for and gives rise to an analytically expressible capacity lower
bound. For Gaussian fading, this novel bound is shown to converge to the
Gaussian-input mutual information as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) grows,
provided that the variance of the channel estimation error tends to
zero as the SNR tends to infinity.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information

Adaptive Communications for Next Generation Broadband Wireless Access Systems
In Broadband Wireless Access systems the efficient use of the resources is crucial from many points of views. From the operator point of view, the bandwidth is a scarce, valuable, and expensive resource which must be exploited in an efficient manner while the Quality of Service (QoS) provided to the users is guaranteed. On the other hand, a tight delay and link quality constraints are imposed on each data flow hence the user experiences the same quality as in fixed networks. During the last few years many techniques have been developed in order to increase the spectral efficiency and the throughput. Among them, the use of multiple antennas at the transmitter and the receiver (exploiting spatial multiplexing) with the joint optimization of the medium access control layer and the physical layer parameters. In this Ph.D. thesis, different adaptive techniques for B3G multicarrier wireless systems are developed and proposed focusing on the SS-MC-MA and the OFDM(A) (IEEE 802.16a/e/m standards) communication schemes. The research lines emphasize into the adaptation of the transmission having (Partial) knowledge of the Channel State Information for both; single antenna and multiple antenna links. For single antenna links, the implementation of a joint resource allocation and scheduling strategy by including adaptive modulation and coding is investigated. A low complexity resource allocation and scheduling algorithm is proposed with the objective to cope with real- and/or non-real- time requirements and constraints. A special attention is also devoted in reducing the required signalling. However, for multiple antenna links, the performance of a proposed adaptive transmit antenna selection scheme jointly with space-time block coding selection is investigated and compared with conventional structures. In this research line, mainly two optimizations criteria are proposed for spatial link adaptation, one based on the minimum error rate for fixed throughput, and the second focused on the maximisation of the rate for fixed error rate. Finally, some indications are given on how to include the spatial adaptation into the investigated and proposed resource allocation and scheduling process developed for single antenna transmission
Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer in 5G communication
Green communication technology is expected to be widely adopted in future generation
networks to improve energy efficiency and reliability of wireless communication network.
Among the green communication technologies, simultaneous wireless information and
power transfer (SWIPT) is adopted for its flexible energy harvesting technology through
the radio frequency (RF) signa lthati sused for information transmission. Even though
existing SWIPT techniques are flexible and adoptable for the wireless communication
networks, the power and time resources of the signal need to be shared between infor-
mation transmission and RF energy harvesting, and this compromises the quality of the
signal. Therefore,SWIP Ttechniques need to be designed to allow an efficient resource
allocation for communication and energy harvesting.
The goal oft his thesisis to design SWIP Ttechniques that allow efficient, reliable and
secure joint communications and power transference. A problem associated to SWIPT
techniques combined with multi carrier signals is that the increased power requirements
inherent to energy harvesting purposes can exacerbate nonlinear distortion effects at the
transmitter. Therefore, we evaluate nonlinear distortion and present feasible solutions to
mitigate the impact of nonlinear distortion effects on the performance.Another goal of
the thesisis to take advantage of the energy harvesting signals in SWIP Ttechniques for
channel estimation and security purposes.Theperformance of these SWIPT techniques is
evaluated analytically, and those results are validated by simulations. It is shownthatthe
proposed SWIPT schemes can have excellent performance, out performing conventional
SWIPT schemes.
a fiabilidade.
Embora as técnicas SWIPT existentes sejam fle-
SWIPT convencionais

Adaptive Coded Modulation Classification and Spectrum Sensing for Cognitive Radio Systems. Adaptive Coded Modulation Techniques for Cognitive Radio Using Kalman Filter and Interacting Multiple Model Methods
The current and future trends of modern wireless communication systems place heavy demands on fast data transmissions in order to satisfy end users’ requirements anytime, anywhere. Such demands are obvious in recent applications such as smart phones, long term evolution (LTE), 4 & 5 Generations (4G & 5G), and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) platforms, where robust coding and modulations are essential especially in streaming on-line video material, social media and gaming. This eventually resulted in extreme exhaustion imposed on the frequency spectrum as a rare natural resource due to stagnation in current spectrum management policies. Since its advent in the late 1990s, cognitive radio (CR) has been conceived as an enabling technology aiming at the efficient utilisation of frequency spectrum that can lead to potential direct spectrum access (DSA) management. This is mainly attributed to its internal capabilities inherited from the concept of software defined radio (SDR) to sniff its surroundings, learn and adapt its operational parameters accordingly. CR systems (CRs) may commonly comprise one or all of the following core engines that characterise their architectures; namely, adaptive coded modulation (ACM), automatic modulation classification (AMC) and spectrum sensing (SS).
Motivated by the above challenges, this programme of research is primarily aimed at the design and development of new paradigms to help improve the adaptability of CRs and thereby achieve the desirable signal processing tasks at the physical layer of the above core engines. Approximate modelling of Rayleigh and finite state Markov channels (FSMC) with a new concept borrowed from econometric studies have been approached. Then insightful channel estimation by using Kalman filter (KF) augmented with interacting multiple model (IMM) has been examined for the purpose of robust adaptability, which is applied for the first time in wireless communication systems. Such new IMM-KF combination has been facilitated in the feedback channel between wireless transmitter and receiver to adjust the transmitted power, by using a water-filling (WF) technique, and constellation pattern and rate in the ACM algorithm. The AMC has also benefited from such IMM-KF integration to boost the performance against conventional parametric estimation methods such as maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) for channel interrogation and the estimated parameters of both inserted into the ML classification algorithm. Expectation-maximisation (EM) has been applied to examine unknown transmitted modulation sequences and channel parameters in tandem. Finally, the non-parametric multitaper method (MTM) has been thoroughly examined for spectrum estimation (SE) and SS, by relying on Neyman-Pearson (NP) detection principle for hypothesis test, to allow licensed primary users (PUs) to coexist with opportunistic unlicensed secondary users (SUs) in the same frequency bands of interest without harmful effects. The performance of the above newly suggested paradigms have been simulated and assessed under various transmission settings and revealed substantial improvements
