    Embedded system for motion control of an omnidirectional mobile robot

    In this paper, an embedded system for motion control of omnidirectional mobile robots is presented. An omnidirectional mobile robot is a type of holonomic robots. It can move simultaneously and independently in translation and rotation. The RoboCup small-size league, a robotic soccer competition, is chosen as the research platform in this paper. The first part of this research is to design and implement an embedded system that can communicate with a remote server using a wireless link, and execute received commands. Second, a fuzzy-Tuned proportional-integral (PI) path planner and a related low-level controller are proposed to attain optimal input for driving a linear discrete dynamic model of the omnidirectional mobile robot. To fit the planning requirements and avoid slippage, velocity, and acceleration filters are also employed. In particular, low-level optimal controllers, such as a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) for multiple-input-multiple-output acceleration and deceleration of velocity are investigated, where an LQR controller is running on the robot with feedback from motor encoders or sensors. Simultaneously, a fuzzy adaptive PI is used as a high-level controller for position monitoring, where an appropriate vision system is used as a source of position feedback. A key contribution presented in this research is an improvement in the combined fuzzy-PI LQR controller over a traditional PI controller. Moreover, the efficiency of the proposed approach and PI controller are also discussed. Simulation and experimental evaluations are conducted with and without external disturbance. An optimal result to decrease the variances between the target trajectory and the actual output is delivered by the onboard regulator controller in this paper. The modeling and experimental results confirm the claim that utilizing the new approach in trajectory-planning controllers results in more precise motion of four-wheeled omnidirectional mobile robots. 2018 IEEE.Scopu

    Nonlinear control of wheeled mobile robots

    The purpose of this project is to implement an autonomous navigation system using nonlinear control techniques to control a wheeled mobile robot (WMR) to follow a preplanned trajectory and track a path. Two other aspects of navigation are studied: path planning and obstacle avoidance. Those three aspects are integrated into a navigation strategy that manages navigation and prevents deadlocks. Two nonlinear control techniques for path tracking and trajectory following have been developed and implemented. In the first approach, a fuzzy logic controller is used to drive the robot through a set of waypoints leading to the destination. In another approach, a controller derived from a Lyapunov function is used to track a reference trajectory that is time dependent. For path planning, a novel optimization technique based on dynamic programming has been developed. The curvature velocity method has been used for obstacle avoidance. The testing was conducted on a P3-AT all-terrain mobile robot equipped with encoders, a gyroscope, and sonar sensors for localization and environment perception. The test results validate the effectiveness of the different approaches that have been developed

    Path Planning with Potential Field-Based Obstacle Avoidance in a 3D Environment by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

    In this paper we address the problem of path planning in an unknown environment with an aerial robot. The main goal is to safely follow the planned trajectory by avoiding obstacles. The proposed approach is suitable for aerial vehicles equipped with 3D sensors, such as LiDARs. It performs obstacle avoidance in real time and on an on-board computer. We present a novel algorithm based on the conventional Artifcial Potential Field (APF) that corrects the planned trajectory to avoid obstacles. To this end, our modifed algorithm uses a rotation-based component to avoid local minima. The smooth trajectory following, achieved with the MPC tracker, allows us to quickly change and re-plan the UAV trajectory. Comparative experiments in simulation have shown that our approach solves local minima problems in trajectory planning and generates more effcient paths to avoid potential collisions with static obstacles compared to the original APF method

    Path and Motion Planning for Autonomous Mobile 3D Printing

    Autonomous robotic construction was envisioned as early as the ‘90s, and yet, con- struction sites today look much alike ones half a century ago. Meanwhile, highly automated and efficient fabrication methods like Additive Manufacturing, or 3D Printing, have seen great success in conventional production. However, existing efforts to transfer printing technology to construction applications mainly rely on manufacturing-like machines and fail to utilise the capabilities of modern robotics. This thesis considers using Mobile Manipulator robots to perform large-scale Additive Manufacturing tasks. Comprised of an articulated arm and a mobile base, Mobile Manipulators, are unique in their simultaneous mobility and agility, which enables printing-in-motion, or Mobile 3D Printing. This is a 3D printing modality, where a robot deposits material along larger-than-self trajectories while in motion. Despite profound potential advantages over existing static manufacturing-like large- scale printers, Mobile 3D printing is underexplored. Therefore, this thesis tack- les Mobile 3D printing-specific challenges and proposes path and motion planning methodologies that allow this printing modality to be realised. The work details the development of Task-Consistent Path Planning that solves the problem of find- ing a valid robot-base path needed to print larger-than-self trajectories. A motion planning and control strategy is then proposed, utilising the robot-base paths found to inform an optimisation-based whole-body motion controller. Several Mobile 3D Printing robot prototypes are built throughout this work, and the overall path and motion planning strategy proposed is holistically evaluated in a series of large-scale 3D printing experiments

    Formation control of mobile robots and unmanned aerial vehicles

    In this dissertation, the nonlinear control of nonholonomic mobile robot formations and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) formations is undertaken and presented in six papers. In the first paper, an asymptotically stable combined kinematic/torque control law is developed for leader-follower based formation control of mobile robots using backstepping. A neural network (NN) is introduced along with robust integral of the sign of the error (RISE) feedback to approximate the dynamics of the follower as well as its leader using online weight tuning. Subsequently, in the second paper, a novel NN observer is designed to estimate the linear and angular velocities of both the follower and its leader robot and a NN output feedback control law is developed. On the other hand, in the third paper, a NN-based output feedback control law is presented for the control of an underactuated quad rotor UAV, and a NN virtual control input scheme is proposed which allows all six degrees of freedom to be controlled using only four control inputs. The results of this paper are extended to include the control of quadrotor UAV formations, and a novel three-dimensional leader-follower framework is proposed in the fourth paper. Next, in the fifth paper, the discrete-time nonlinear optimal control is undertaken using two online approximators (OLA\u27s) to solve the infinite horizon Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation forward-in-time to achieve nearly optimal regulation and tracking control. In contrast, paper six utilizes a single OLA to solve the infinite horizon HJB and Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs (HJI) equations forward-intime for the near optimal regulation and tracking control of continuous affine nonlinear systems. The effectiveness of the optimal tracking controllers proposed in the fifth and sixth papers are then demonstrated using nonholonomic mobile robot formation control --Abstract, page iv

    System Design, Motion Modelling and Planning for a Recon figurable Wheeled Mobile Robot

    Over the past ve decades the use of mobile robotic rovers to perform in-situ scienti c investigations on the surfaces of the Moon and Mars has been tremendously in uential in shaping our understanding of these extraterrestrial environments. As robotic missions have evolved there has been a greater desire to explore more unstructured terrain. This has exposed mobility limitations with conventional rover designs such as getting stuck in soft soil or simply not being able to access rugged terrain. Increased mobility and terrain traversability are key requirements when considering designs for next generation planetary rovers. Coupled with these requirements is the need to autonomously navigate unstructured terrain by taking full advantage of increased mobility. To address these issues, a high degree-of-freedom recon gurable platform that is capable of energy intensive legged locomotion in obstacle-rich terrain as well as wheeled locomotion in benign terrain is proposed. The complexities of the planning task that considers the high degree-of-freedom state space of this platform are considerable. A variant of asymptotically optimal sampling-based planners that exploits the presence of dominant sub-spaces within a recon gurable mobile robot's kinematic structure is proposed to increase path quality and ensure platform safety. The contributions of this thesis include: the design and implementation of a highly mobile planetary analogue rover; motion modelling of the platform to enable novel locomotion modes, along with experimental validation of each of these capabilities; the sampling-based HBFMT* planner that hierarchically considers sub-spaces to better guide search of the complete state space; and experimental validation of the planner with the physical platform that demonstrates how the planner exploits the robot's capabilities to uidly transition between various physical geometric con gurations and wheeled/legged locomotion modes

    Map-based localization for urban service mobile robotics

    Mobile robotics research is currently interested on exporting autonomous navigation results achieved in indoor environments, to more challenging environments, such as, for instance, urban pedestrian areas. Developing mobile robots with autonomous navigation capabilities in such urban environments supposes a basic requirement for a upperlevel service set that could be provided to an users community. However, exporting indoor techniques to outdoor urban pedestrian scenarios is not evident due to the larger size of the environment, the dynamism of the scene due to pedestrians and other moving obstacles, the sunlight conditions, and the high presence of three dimensional elements such as ramps, steps, curbs or holes. Moreover, GPS-based mobile robot localization has demonstrated insufficient performance for robust long-term navigation in urban environments. One of the key modules within autonomous navigation is localization. If localization supposes an a priori map, even if it is not a complete model of the environment, localization is called map-based. This assumption is realistic since current trends of city councils are on building precise maps of their cities, specially of the most interesting places such as city downtowns. Having robots localized within a map allows for a high-level planning and monitoring, so that robots can achieve goal points expressed on the map, by following in a deliberative way a previously planned route. This thesis deals with the mobile robot map-based localization issue in urban pedestrian areas. The thesis approach uses the particle filter algorithm, a well-known and widely used probabilistic and recursive method for data fusion and state estimation. The main contributions of the thesis are divided on four aspects: (1) long-term experiments of mobile robot 2D and 3D position tracking in real urban pedestrian scenarios within a full autonomous navigation framework, (2) developing a fast and accurate technique to compute on-line range observation models in 3D environments, a basic step required by the real-time performance of the developed particle filter, (3) formulation of a particle filter that integrates asynchronous data streams and (4) a theoretical proposal to solve the global localization problem in an active and cooperative way, defining cooperation as either information sharing among the robots or planning joint actions to solve a common goal.Actualment, la recerca en robòtica mòbil té un interés creixent en exportar els resultats de navegació autònoma aconseguits en entorns interiors cap a d'altres tipus d'entorns més exigents, com, per exemple, les àrees urbanes peatonals. Desenvolupar capacitats de navegació autònoma en aquests entorns urbans és un requisit bàsic per poder proporcionar un conjunt de serveis de més alt nivell a una comunitat d'usuaris. Malgrat tot, exportar les tècniques d'interiors cap a entorns exteriors peatonals no és evident, a causa de la major dimensió de l'entorn, del dinamisme de l'escena provocada pels peatons i per altres obstacles en moviment, de la resposta de certs sensors a la il.luminació natural, i de la constant presència d'elements tridimensionals tals com rampes, escales, voreres o forats. D'altra banda, la localització de robots mòbils basada en GPS ha demostrat uns resultats insuficients de cara a una navegació robusta i de llarga durada en entorns urbans. Una de les peces clau en la navegació autònoma és la localització. En el cas que la localització consideri un mapa conegut a priori, encara que no sigui un model complet de l'entorn, parlem d'una localització basada en un mapa. Aquesta assumpció és realista ja que la tendència actual de les administracions locals és de construir mapes precisos de les ciutats, especialment dels llocs d'interés tals com les zones més cèntriques. El fet de tenir els robots localitzats en un mapa permet una planificació i una monitorització d'alt nivell, i així els robots poden arribar a destinacions indicades sobre el mapa, tot seguint de forma deliberativa una ruta prèviament planificada. Aquesta tesi tracta el tema de la localització de robots mòbils, basada en un mapa i per entorns urbans peatonals. La proposta de la tesi utilitza el filtre de partícules, un mètode probabilístic i recursiu, ben conegut i àmpliament utilitzat per la fusió de dades i l'estimació d'estats. Les principals contribucions de la tesi queden dividides en quatre aspectes: (1) experimentació de llarga durada del seguiment de la posició, tant en 2D com en 3D, d'un robot mòbil en entorns urbans reals, en el context de la navegació autònoma, (2) desenvolupament d'una tècnica ràpida i precisa per calcular en temps d'execució els models d'observació de distàncies en entorns 3D, un requisit bàsic pel rendiment del filtre de partícules a temps real, (3) formulació d'un filtre de partícules que integra conjunts de dades asíncrones i (4) proposta teòrica per solucionar la localització global d'una manera activa i cooperativa, entenent la cooperació com el fet de compartir informació, o bé com el de planificar accions conjuntes per solucionar un objectiu comú
