    Nature-inspired heuristics for the multiple-vehicle selective pickup and delivery problem under maximum profit and incentive fairness criteria

    This work focuses on wide-scale freight transportation logistics motivated by the sharp increase of on-line shopping stores and the upsurge of Internet as the most frequently utilized selling channel during the last decade. This huge ecosystem of one-click-away catalogs has ultimately unleashed the need for efficient algorithms aimed at properly scheduling the underlying transportation resources in an efficient fashion, especially over the so-called last mile of the distribution chain. In this context the selective pickup and delivery problem focuses on determining the optimal subset of packets that should be picked from its origin city and delivered to their corresponding destination within a given time frame, often driven by the maximization of the total profit of the courier service company. This manuscript tackles a realistic variant of this problem where the transportation fleet is composed by more than one vehicle, which further complicates the selection of packets due to the subsequent need for coordinating the delivery service from the command center. In particular the addressed problem includes a second optimization metric aimed at reflecting a fair share of the net benefit among the company staff based on their driven distance. To efficiently solve this optimization problem, several nature-inspired metaheuristic solvers are analyzed and statistically compared to each other under different parameters of the problem setup. Finally, results obtained over a realistic scenario over the province of Bizkaia (Spain) using emulated data will be explored so as to shed light on the practical applicability of the analyzed heuristics

    Staff scheduling for a courier distribution centre using evolutionary algorithm

    Staff scheduling is a combinatorics optimization problem and companies face this complex task on daily basis in constructing a schedule fitting all conditions. In a courier distribution center, staffs are assigned to work in processes of a continuous workflow. Staffs have varying work ability for each process. Instead of generating staff schedule instinctively, it is an advantage to optimize staff’s schedule by measuring the performance of each staff. An optimized schedule improves the operation’s efficiency and fully utilize staffs’ work ability, hence, minimizing the cost. This paper proposed evolutionary algorithm, namely genetic algorithm as the solution to courier center staff scheduling. Based on the result, the produced schedule can reduce up to 30% of the staff in schedule while not affecting operation workflow. The cut down on number of working staffs could amount to a substantial reduction of operation cost every month. The generated schedule is significantly customized and take less time to complete an operation. Although the proposed solution is specific to the use case of a courier distribution center, it is however, potentially a generalize model for the logistics industry, introducing a more effective staff scheduling system to cope with the industry’s ever-rising demands

    Applications of biased-randomized algorithms and simheuristics in integrated logistics

    Transportation and logistics (T&L) activities play a vital role in the development of many businesses from different industries. With the increasing number of people living in urban areas, the expansion of on-demand economy and e-commerce activities, the number of services from transportation and delivery has considerably increased. Consequently, several urban problems have been potentialized, such as traffic congestion and pollution. Several related problems can be formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem (COP). Since most of them are NP-Hard, the finding of optimal solutions through exact solution methods is often impractical in a reasonable amount of time. In realistic settings, the increasing need for 'instant' decision-making further refutes their use in real life. Under these circumstances, this thesis aims at: (i) identifying realistic COPs from different industries; (ii) developing different classes of approximate solution approaches to solve the identified T&L problems; (iii) conducting a series of computational experiments to validate and measure the performance of the developed approaches. The novel concept of 'agile optimization' is introduced, which refers to the combination of biased-randomized heuristics with parallel computing to deal with real-time decision-making.Las actividades de transporte y logística (T&L) juegan un papel vital en el desarrollo de muchas empresas de diferentes industrias. Con el creciente número de personas que viven en áreas urbanas, la expansión de la economía a lacarta y las actividades de comercio electrónico, el número de servicios de transporte y entrega ha aumentado considerablemente. En consecuencia, se han potencializado varios problemas urbanos, como la congestión del tráfico y la contaminación. Varios problemas relacionados pueden formularse como un problema de optimización combinatoria (COP). Dado que la mayoría de ellos son NP-Hard, la búsqueda de soluciones óptimas a través de métodos de solución exactos a menudo no es práctico en un período de tiempo razonable. En entornos realistas, la creciente necesidad de una toma de decisiones "instantánea" refuta aún más su uso en la vida real. En estas circunstancias, esta tesis tiene como objetivo: (i) identificar COP realistas de diferentes industrias; (ii) desarrollar diferentes clases de enfoques de solución aproximada para resolver los problemas de T&L identificados; (iii) realizar una serie de experimentos computacionales para validar y medir el desempeño de los enfoques desarrollados. Se introduce el nuevo concepto de optimización ágil, que se refiere a la combinación de heurísticas aleatorias sesgadas con computación paralela para hacer frente a la toma de decisiones en tiempo real.Les activitats de transport i logística (T&L) tenen un paper vital en el desenvolupament de moltes empreses de diferents indústries. Amb l'augment del nombre de persones que viuen a les zones urbanes, l'expansió de l'economia a la carta i les activitats de comerç electrònic, el nombre de serveis del transport i el lliurament ha augmentat considerablement. En conseqüència, s'han potencialitzat diversos problemes urbans, com ara la congestió del trànsit i la contaminació. Es poden formular diversos problemes relacionats com a problema d'optimització combinatòria (COP). Com que la majoria són NP-Hard, la recerca de solucions òptimes mitjançant mètodes de solució exactes sovint no és pràctica en un temps raonable. En entorns realistes, la creixent necessitat de prendre decisions "instantànies" refuta encara més el seu ús a la vida real. En aquestes circumstàncies, aquesta tesi té com a objectiu: (i) identificar COP realistes de diferents indústries; (ii) desenvolupar diferents classes d'aproximacions aproximades a la solució per resoldre els problemes identificats de T&L; (iii) la realització d'una sèrie d'experiments computacionals per validar i mesurar el rendiment dels enfocaments desenvolupats.     Operational Research: Methods and Applications

    Throughout its history, Operational Research has evolved to include a variety of methods, models and algorithms that have been applied to a diverse and wide range of contexts. This encyclopedic article consists of two main sections: methods and applications. The first aims to summarise the up-to-date knowledge and provide an overview of the state-of-the-art methods and key developments in the various subdomains of the field. The second offers a wide-ranging list of areas where Operational Research has been applied. The article is meant to be read in a nonlinear fashion. It should be used as a point of reference or first-port-of-call for a diverse pool of readers: academics, researchers, students, and practitioners. The entries within the methods and applications sections are presented in alphabetical order. The authors dedicate this paper to the 2023 Turkey/Syria earthquake victims. We sincerely hope that advances in OR will play a role towards minimising the pain and suffering caused by this and future catastrophes

    Heuristics for New Problems Arising in the Transport of People and Goods

    The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) and its numerous variants are amongst the most widely studied in the entire Operations Research literature, with applications in fields includ- ing supply chain management, journey planning and vehicle scheduling. In this thesis, we focus on three problems from two fields with a wide reach; the design of public trans- port systems and the robust routing of delivery vehicles. Each chapter investigates a new setting, formulates an optimization problem, introduces various solution methods and presents computational experiments highlighting salient points. The first problem involves commuters who use a flexible shuttle service to travel to a main transit hub, where they catch a fixed route public transport service to their true destina- tion. In our variant, passengers must forgo some of the choices they had in previous ver- sions; the service provider chooses the specific hub passengers are taken to (provided all relevant timing constraints are satisfied). This introduces both complexities and opportu- nities not seen in other VRP variants, so we present two solution methods tailored for this problem. An extensive computational study over a range of networks shows this flexibility allows significant cost savings with little impact on the quality of service received. The second problem involves dynamic ridesharing schemes and one of their most per- sistent drawbacks: the requirement to attract a large number of users during the start up phase. Although this is influenced by many factors, a significant consideration is the per- ceived uncertainty around finding a match. To address this, the service provider may wish to employ a small number of their own private drivers, to serve riders who would oth- erwise remain unmatched. We explore how this could be formulated as an optimization problem and discuss the objectives and constraints the service provider may have. We then describe a special structure inherent to the problem and present three different so- lution methods which exploit this. Finally, a broad computational study demonstrates the potential benefits of these dedicated drivers and identifies environments in which they are most useful. The third problem comes from the field of logistics and involves a large delivery firm serving an uncertain customer set. The firm wishes to build low cost delivery routes that remain efficient after the appearance and removal of some customers. We formulate this problem and present a heuristic which is both computationally cheaper and more versatile than comparative exact methods. A wide computational study illustrates our heuristic’s predictive power and its efficacy compared to natural alternative strategies

    The AIRO 2016 book of abstract collects the contributions from the conference participants. The AIRO 2016 Conference is a special occasion for the Italian Operations Research community, as AIRO annual conferences turn 46th edition in 2016. To reflect this special occasion, the Programme and Organizing Committee, chaired by Walter Ukovich, prepared a high quality Scientific Programme including the first initiative of AIRO Young, the new AIRO poster section that aims to promote the work of students, PhD students, and Postdocs with an interest in Operations Research. The Scientific Programme of the Conference offers a broad spectrum of contributions covering the variety of OR topics and research areas with an emphasis on “Emerging Advances in Logistics Systems”. The event aims at stimulating integration of existing methods and systems, fostering communication amongst different research groups, and laying the foundations for OR integrated research projects in the next decade. Distinct thematic sections follow the AIRO 2016 days starting by initial presentation of the objectives and features of the Conference. In addition three invited internationally known speakers will present Plenary Lectures, by Gianni Di Pillo, Frédéric Semet e Stefan Nickel, gathering AIRO 2016 participants together to offer key presentations on the latest advances and developments in OR’s research
