Natural language processing in CLIME, a multilingual legal advisory system

    Get PDF
This paper describes CLIME, a web-based legal advisory system with a multilingual natural language interface. clime is a 'proof-of-concept' system which answers queries relating to ship-building and ship-operating regulations. Its core knowledge source is a set of such regulations encoded as a conceptual domain model and a set of formalised legal inference rules. The system supports retrieval of regulations via the conceptual model, and assessment of the legality of a situation or activity on a ship according to the legal inference rules. The focus of this paper is on the natural language aspects of the system, which help the user to construct semantically complex queries using wysiwym technology, allow the system to produce extended and cohesive responses and explanations, and support the whole interaction through a hybrid synchronous/asynchronous dialogue structure. Multilinguality (English and French) is viewed simply as interface localisation: the core representations are languageneutral, and the system can present extended or local interactions in either language at any time. The development of clime featured a high degree of client involvement, and the specification, implementation and evaluation of natural language components in this context are also discussed

    Editing OWL through generated CNL

Abstract. Traditionally, Controlled Natural Languages (CNLs) are de-signed either to avoid ambiguity for human readers, or to facilitate auto-matic semantic analysis, so that texts can be transcoded to a knowledge representation language. CNLs of the second kind have recently been adapted to the requirements of knowledge formation in OWL for the Semantic Web. We suggest in this paper a variant approach based on automatic generation of texts in CNL (as opposed to automatic analy-sis), and argue that this provides the best of both worlds, allowing us to pursue human readability in addition to a precise mapping from texts to a formal language.

Towards a generation-based semantic web authoring tool

Widespread use of Semantic Web technologies requires interfaces through which knowledge can be viewed and edited without deep understanding of Description Logic and formalisms like OWL and RDF. Several groups are pursuing approaches based on Controlled Natural Languages (CNLs), so that editing can be performed by typing in sentences which are automatically interpreted as statements in OWL. We suggest here a variant of this approach which relies entirely on Natural Language Generation (NLG), and propose requirements for a system that can reliably generate transparent realisations of statements in Description Logic

Much has been said in the recent years about artificial intelligence, and its impacts on our daily lives. Regarding the legal field, professionals and experts in the field predict that, in a few years, we will face a radial disruption in the field, where in the near future we will have a revolution guided by advances in technology and Artificial Intelligence. Within the Law, students and professionals collect diverse opinions about the implementation of the technology in their routines, and can often generate confusion regarding the future of the operators of right. Within this context, the main objective of this research is to carry out a survey of crucial questions for the application or not of technology in Brazil. Through a bibliographical survey, cases containing the application of technology in several areas of Law were studied in depth and detailed. Based on a questionnaire developed through these cases studied, where the technology was applied in the legal scope, it was sought to understand the vision of students and recent graduates in law, with teachers with years of experience in the field. With these two data, it was possible to compare the expectations of the students in the field, who are starting their professional lives, with those who already have professional experience and work experience. The analysis sought to collect comments and observations regarding each application of technology studied in the cases, and to carry out the subjective comparison of the opinions of the students and recent graduates, with the professors of law. The study sought to understand how, in general, the legal ecosystem is preparing for the innovations that are to come in the Law as a whole, as well as the diverse possibilities of applying technologies in the work of the legal professional

IMPACTS in natural language generation NLG between technology and applications : workshop at Schloss Dagstuhl, Germany July 26-28, 2000

Instructional text, because it is a useful and relatively constrained sub-Ianguage, has been a popular target for research-oriented generation systems. This work has demonstrated that existing technology is adequate for generating draft instructions; the problem, as is typical of generation work in general, has been with the acquisition of domain and lexicogrammatical knowledge. This acquisition task is a formidable barrier to the practical use of generation technology. The Isolde project attempts to address this problem by extracting parts of the required knowledge from existing models and by building tools to tailor what is extracted into a form suitable for generation

The flood, the channels, and the dykes : managing legal information a globalized and digital world

Information search and retrieval are part of daily routines of the legal profession. Lawyers, judges, prosecutors, and legal clerks usually access a number of electronic resources to browse, search, select, or update legal contents. Legal databases have currently become large digital libraries where the tasks related to information-seeking may sometimes be cumbersome. Adding semantics to support information search may provide significant results in terms of efficiency, efficacy, and user satisfaction. Semantic technologies may be able to improve legal information search in the judicial and lawyers' domains. However, legal professionals sometimes prefer following routines than changing their information search behavior. New trends in legal ontologies and Semantic Web technologies may help to improve both professional and laymen's skills

A new visibility: on culture, translation and cognition

Current research in Translation Studies has expanded the perspective on Translation – and the notion of its centrality not only as a question of language but also as a crucial issue for the study of culture and the human mind. The present volume builds upon these developments, endowing a new visibility to culture, translation and cognition in their conceptual interdependence. It follows necessarily a multidimensional and thus multidisciplinary approach, dealing with topics such as the translation of historical narrative, a semio-cognitive approach to translation, translation and imagination, the epistemic status of the term translation and its conceptual identity and transversality, notes on world literature and translation, the voice of the translator, the issue of dictionaries and the question of translation in a mobile world.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
