Parsing the Australian English curriculum: Grammar, multimodality and cross-cultural texts

The release of the Australian Curriculum English (ACE) by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has revived debates about the role of grammar as English content knowledge. We consider some of the discussion circulating in the mainstream media vis-Ă -vis the intent of the ACE. We conclude that this curriculum draws upon the complementary tenets of traditional Latin-based grammar and systemic functional linguistics across the three strands of Language, Literature and Literacy in innovative ways. We argue that such an approach is necessary for working with contemporary multimodal and cross-cultural texts. To demonstrate the utility of this new approach, we draw out a set of learning outcomes from Year 6 and then map out a framework for relating the outcomes to the form and function of multimodal language. As a case in point, our analysis is of two online Coca-Cola advertising texts, one each from South Korea and Australia

    Build Community by Fighting

The goal of my thesis project is to design a multifunctional space which enhances the teaching and sharing of mixed martial arts in Hawaii as an art and a sport by responding around an existing program that emphasizes community. The thesis project will introduce the reader on the evolution of mixed martial arts from the past, present and future. The spaces for mixed martial arts is investigated through case studies which aid in guidelines for design. The research and design will introduce a new way to create mixed martial art spaces that can work alongside the community

Taijiquan the 'Taiji World' way: Towards a cosmopolitan vision of ecology.

In this article, we present a case study analysis of data gathered on the practice of the art of Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) in one UK context. Our interest in looking at this physical culture was in exploring if/how physical cultures of shared embodied experience and practice may help “sow the seeds of environmental awareness”. In so doing, we illustrate certain affinities between this interpretation of the art and Beck’s idea of a “cosmopolitan vision of ecology”. We present an analysis of documentary and interview data of one English Taijiquan organisation and how it currently promotes the idea of interconnectedness, wellbeing and an alternative meta-narrative for living through the practice of Taijiquan. We conclude that, while further research is needed, there is evidence that a cosmopolitan vision for ecology is emerging in physical cultures such as Taijiquan

    Buttons, Simplicity, and Natural Interfaces

Because the push button was an inexpensive way to send control signals to a computer from a user or game player, it became the most common aspect of game controllers. The fact that a pressing motion is not in any way connected to typical game activities makes a button inappropriate, and damage could have been done to playability and to user expectations in the long term. Although there was no option in the early days of video games, the push button must be abandoned as soon as possible and be replaced by more natural interfaces, which are largely implemented in softwar

The Effects of Single Versus Multiple Training Sessions on the Motor Skill Retention of Two Krav Maga Strike Techniques: in Women

    Get PDF
Krav Maga (KM) self-defense system experts claim that KM techniques are based on natural body movements, learned rapidly, and improved with additional training. This study investigated the retention and further improvement with additional training of two KM strike techniques: straight punch and defensive kick, in untrained females. All participants received an initial 30-minute instruction session (AQ) taught by a certified KM instructor. Participants were divided into an intervention group (n=8), which received four additional training sessions; and a control group (n=8), which received no additional training. Kinematics and kinetics of punch and kick strikes were recorded at three timepoints: immediately after AQ, five days after AQ, and twelve days after AQ. Skill level obtained during AQ did not degrade in either group. Additional training did not improve skill level beyond that learned during AQ, suggesting increased practice time, or restructuring of training protocol may be required for further skill improvement

Phenomenological Study on Use of Sports and Exercise for Veterans with PTSD

    Get PDF
This phenomenological research was intended to explore the effectiveness of sports and exercise to decrease or manage D-PTSD symptoms in veterans. The study was framed around four research questions: How do veterans describe the impact sports and exercise have on their D- PTSD?, When there are PTSD symptoms being experienced prior to engaging in a sport or exercise, how does the veteran feel after the sport or exercise is completed?, What do veterans describe as the primary catalyst that draws them to engage in combative sports?, What is the holistic connectedness with sports and exercise for veterans with D- PTSD and how are those defined? Participants were twice observed in person in their activity routine and interviewed before and after each activity. Cognitive images of their PTSD and responses to questions about the image were requested. Three themes emerged from examination of veterans’ personal narratives regarding the use of sports and exercise (including combative sports) in managing D-PTSD symptoms: effects of activity, military resemblance, and confronting triggers. The study contributes to the existing literature by introducing a new way to examine how combative sports may provide an effective alternative treatment for D-PTSD
