Monuments, unreal spaces and national forgetting: Kazuo IshiguroÔÇÖs The Buried Giant and the abyss of memory

    No full text
At the announcement of IshiguroÔÇÖs 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature award, his writing was described as having ÔÇśuncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the worldÔÇÖ. Uncovering this abyss entails a confrontation between characters, communities, and the complex relationship with their pasts. IshiguroÔÇÖs decision to engage with memory on a national scale sees a renewed focus on the theme of forgetting in his oeuvre, and a critical exploration of the multiple layers of collective memory. IshiguroÔÇÖs text urges the reader to consider the ethical complexities of memorialisation and enforced amnesty. This essay establishes The Buried Giant as a key development within IshiguroÔÇÖs long-standing memory work, signalling a more considered engagement with themes of shared memory and national identity, as well as the politics of memorialisation, confirming the novelÔÇÖs significance as a focal point on discussions of collective and individual memory within contemporary literature

    On Curation: A Hermeneutical Approach

    Get PDF
Starting point of this paper is the philosophical field of hermeneutics. Hermeneutics was established to account for different conditions of understanding and how they shape our interpretative processes. As different times constitute different conditions, the goal of the discipline essentially is to bridge the temporal gap between the creation of a work and its perception at a given point in time. Whereas traditionally, understanding was a matter of analyzing the historical tradition of author/artist and reader/viewer, nowadays, the perception and interpretation of art is shaped by another instance, the curator. Under the premise that selection and arrangement, i.e. curating, cannot be neutral, the author analyzes different contexts in which curating takes place and how different contexts account for different effects on our perception of art. After outlining the development of the curatorial practiceÔÇöfrom institutional to independent curationÔÇö, a case study of Swiss curator Harald Szeemann serves as opportunity to examine specific phenomena and exhibitions in a detailed manner. A cultural and methodological cesura is proposed after which curators were able to execute the power and influence they have today: independent curation and the ahistorical exhibition. Ahistorical exhibitions disregard chronological display and enable curators to create individual narratives and themes by gathering artworks in a cross-temporal and geographical manner. Throughout the paper, it is assessed if and to what degree the application of hermeneutics onto the field of independent curation is fruitful. This theoretical analysis is followed by a market overview, in which various functions the curator fulfills in different institutions, e.g. museums, galleries, auction houses, are outlined and compared. Optimally, the consideration of cultural and commercial factors enables viewers to approach and see (curated) art in a differentiated way

The place where curses are manufactured : four poets of the Vietnam War

The Vietnam War was unique among American wars. To pinpoint its uniqueness, it was necessary to look for a non-American voice that would enable me to articulate its distinctiveness and explore the American character as observed by an Asian. Takeshi Kaiko proved to be most helpful. From his novel, Into a Black Sun, I was able to establish a working pair of 'bookends' from which to approach the poetry of Walter McDonald, Bruce Weigl, Basil T. Paquet and Steve Mason. Chapter One is devoted to those seemingly mismatched 'bookends,' Walt Whitman and General William C. Westmoreland, and their respective anthropocentric and technocentric visions of progress and the peculiarly American concept of the "open road" as they manifest themselves in Vietnam. In Chapter, Two, I analyze the war poems of Walter McDonald. As a pilot, writing primarily about flying, his poetry manifests General Westmoreland's technocentric vision of the 'road' as determined by and manifest through technology. Chapter Three focuses on the poems of Bruce Weigl. The poems analyzed portray the literal and metaphorical descent from the technocentric, 'numbed' distance of aerial warfare to the world of ground warfare, and the initiation of a 'fucking new guy,' who discovers the contours of the self's interior through a set of experiences that lead from from aerial insertion into the jungle to the degradation of burning human feces. Chapter Four, devoted to the thirteen poems of Basil T. Paquet, focuses on the continuation of the descent begun in Chapter Two. In his capacity as a medic, Paquet's entire body of poems details his quotidian tasks which entail tending the maimed, the mortally wounded and the dead. The final chapter deals with Steve Mason's JohnnY's Song, and his depiction of the plight of Vietnam veterans back in "The World" who are still trapped inside the interior landscape of their individual "ghettoes" of the soul created by their war-time experiences

This issue discusses how humanities and social science research is intrinsically important and indispensable in the context of VUCA, the ÔÇśuncertainÔÇÖ and ÔÇśdifficult to predictÔÇÖ social situation created by advanced science and technology. It also explains that interdisciplinary research is the most effective approach to humanities research in the VUCA era, and that there are many different types of approaches. VisitorsÔÇÖ Experience at Historical Sites in the City of Amman: A Case Study

    Get PDF
Historical sites are a deep cultural heritage element that expresses the city's identity and its ancient life. Most cities have a long-civilized history, and the aspects of modern cities rely on it. However, some historical sites remained clear within the components of modern cities, so they became distinctive landmarks and points of attraction for local visitors and tourists, even becoming essential places for recreation and changing the routine of contemporary life. The moving from a historical site to the elements of a modern city needs a deliberate natural planning gradation. The landscape and gardens were the most appropriate for this transition in some places, acting as a natural separator between these two time periods and attractive places for visitors. This research presents the importance and impact of historical and archaeological sites on the inhabitants of the modern city, the behaviors and experiences of visitors as they move from busy city life and modern-day technology to ancient, nostalgic places. And how the parks and surrounding areas of the archaeological site helped integrate modern civil society with the image of the old city. Through a case study in Amman / Jordan, "The Roman Amphitheater and Amman citadel, a special questionnaire was conducted to find out the visitors' opinions, feelings, and behaviors of infamous sites in Amman. As a result of the study and questionnaire and specific questions, the historical sites have a significant emotional, psychological, and even spatial position for visitors to cities. They prefer them to the rest of the town
