Silicon-Nitride Platform for Narrowband Entangled Photon Generation
CMOS-compatible photonic chips are highly desirable for real-world quantum
optics devices due to their scalability, robustness, and integration with
electronics. Despite impressive advances using Silicon nanostructures,
challenges remain in reducing their linear and nonlinear losses and in creating
narrowband photons necessary for interfacing with quantum memories. Here we
demonstrate the potential of the silicon nitride (Si3N4) platform by realizing
an ultracompact, bright, entangled photon-pair source with selectable photon
bandwidths down to 30 MHz, which is unprecedented for an integrated source.
Leveraging Si3N4's moderate thermal expansion, simple temperature control of
the chip enables precise wavelength stabilization and tunability without active
control. Single-mode photon pairs at 1550 nm are generated at rates exceeding
107 s-1 with mW's of pump power and are used to produce time-bin entanglement.
Moreover, Si3N4 allows for operation from the visible to the mid-IR, which make
it highly promising for a wide range of integrated quantum photonics
applications.Comment: Please don't hesitate to email comments and suggestion
Towards Zero-Shot Frame Semantic Parsing for Domain Scaling
State-of-the-art slot filling models for goal-oriented human/machine
conversational language understanding systems rely on deep learning methods.
While multi-task training of such models alleviates the need for large
in-domain annotated datasets, bootstrapping a semantic parsing model for a new
domain using only the semantic frame, such as the back-end API or knowledge
graph schema, is still one of the holy grail tasks of language understanding
for dialogue systems. This paper proposes a deep learning based approach that
can utilize only the slot description in context without the need for any
labeled or unlabeled in-domain examples, to quickly bootstrap a new domain. The
main idea of this paper is to leverage the encoding of the slot names and
descriptions within a multi-task deep learned slot filling model, to implicitly
align slots across domains. The proposed approach is promising for solving the
domain scaling problem and eliminating the need for any manually annotated data
or explicit schema alignment. Furthermore, our experiments on multiple domains
show that this approach results in significantly better slot-filling
performance when compared to using only in-domain data, especially in the low
data regime.Comment: 4 pages + 1 reference
Auto-Encoding Scene Graphs for Image Captioning
We propose Scene Graph Auto-Encoder (SGAE) that incorporates the language
inductive bias into the encoder-decoder image captioning framework for more
human-like captions. Intuitively, we humans use the inductive bias to compose
collocations and contextual inference in discourse. For example, when we see
the relation `person on bike', it is natural to replace `on' with `ride' and
infer `person riding bike on a road' even the `road' is not evident. Therefore,
exploiting such bias as a language prior is expected to help the conventional
encoder-decoder models less likely overfit to the dataset bias and focus on
reasoning. Specifically, we use the scene graph --- a directed graph
() where an object node is connected by adjective nodes and
relationship nodes --- to represent the complex structural layout of both image
() and sentence (). In the textual domain, we use
SGAE to learn a dictionary () that helps to reconstruct sentences
in the pipeline, where encodes the desired language prior;
in the vision-language domain, we use the shared to guide the
encoder-decoder in the pipeline. Thanks to the scene graph
representation and shared dictionary, the inductive bias is transferred across
domains in principle. We validate the effectiveness of SGAE on the challenging
MS-COCO image captioning benchmark, e.g., our SGAE-based single-model achieves
a new state-of-the-art CIDEr-D on the Karpathy split, and a competitive
CIDEr-D (c40) on the official server even compared to other ensemble

Neuromorphic analogue VLSI
Neuromorphic systems emulate the organization and function of nervous systems. They are usually composed of analogue electronic circuits that are fabricated in the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) medium using very large-scale integration (VLSI) technology. However, these neuromorphic systems are not another kind of digital computer in which abstract neural networks are simulated symbolically in terms of their mathematical behavior. Instead, they directly embody, in the physics of their CMOS circuits, analogues of the physical processes that underlie the computations of neural systems. The significance of neuromorphic systems is that they offer a method of exploring neural computation in a medium whose physical behavior is analogous to that of biological nervous systems and that operates in real time irrespective of size. The implications of this approach are both scientific and practical. The study of neuromorphic systems provides a bridge between levels of understanding. For example, it provides a link between the physical processes of neurons and their computational significance. In addition, the synthesis of neuromorphic systems transposes our knowledge of neuroscience into practical devices that can interact directly with the real world in the same way that biological nervous systems do
Future benefits and applications of intelligent on-board processing to VSAT services
The trends and roles of VSAT services in the year 2010 time frame are examined based on an overall network and service model for that period. An estimate of the VSAT traffic is then made and the service and general network requirements are identified. In order to accommodate these traffic needs, four satellite VSAT architectures based on the use of fixed or scanning multibeam antennas in conjunction with IF switching or onboard regeneration and baseband processing are suggested. The performance of each of these architectures is assessed and the key enabling technologies are identified
