    X-ray-frequency modulation via periodic switching of an external magnetic field

    Single x-ray photons can be resonantly scattered and stored with the help of suitable transitions in the atomic nucleus. Here, we investigate theoretically means of mechanical-free modulation for the frequency spectra of such x-ray photons via periodic switching of an external magnetic field. We show that periodically switching on and off an external magnetic field generating hyperfine splitting of the nuclear transition leads to the generation of equidistant narrow sidebands of the resonantly scattered response. This frequency-comb-like structure depends on the magnitude and orientation of the applied magnetic field and on the switching period. An analytical approach for the characterization of the comblike frequency spectrum is presented. The feasibility of the external control on the frequency modulation of the x-ray response is discussed in view of possible applications in high-resolution spectroscopy or quantum technology

    Enabling object storage via shims for grid middleware

    The Object Store model has quickly become the basis of most commercially successful mass storage infrastructure, backing so-called "Cloud" storage such as Amazon S3, but also underlying the implementation of most parallel distributed storage systems. Many of the assumptions in Object Store design are similar, but not identical, to concepts in the design of Grid Storage Elements, although the requirement for "POSIX-like" filesystem structures on top of SEs makes the disjunction seem larger. As modern Object Stores provide many features that most Grid SEs do not (block level striping, parallel access, automatic file repair, etc.), it is of interest to see how easily we can provide interfaces to typical Object Stores via plugins and shims for Grid tools, and how well experiments can adapt their data models to them. We present evaluation of, and first-deployment experiences with, (for example) Xrootd-Ceph interfaces for direct object-store access, as part of an initiative within GridPP[1] hosted at RAL. Additionally, we discuss the tradeoffs and experience of developing plugins for the currently-popular Ceph parallel distributed filesystem for the GFAL2 access layer, at Glasgow

    AliEnFS - a Linux File System for the AliEn Grid Services

    Among the services offered by the AliEn (ALICE Environment http://alien.cern.ch) Grid framework there is a virtual file catalogue to allow transparent access to distributed data-sets using various file transfer protocols. alienfsalienfs (AliEn File System) integrates the AliEn file catalogue as a new file system type into the Linux kernel using LUFS, a hybrid user space file system framework (Open Source http://lufs.sourceforge.net). LUFS uses a special kernel interface level called VFS (Virtual File System Switch) to communicate via a generalised file system interface to the AliEn file system daemon. The AliEn framework is used for authentication, catalogue browsing, file registration and read/write transfer operations. A C++ API implements the generic file system operations. The goal of AliEnFS is to allow users easy interactive access to a worldwide distributed virtual file system using familiar shell commands (f.e. cp,ls,rm ...)
