    The PRIMA fringe sensor unit

    The Fringe Sensor Unit (FSU) is the central element of the Phase Referenced Imaging and Micro-arcsecond Astrometry (PRIMA) dual-feed facility and provides fringe sensing for all observation modes, comprising off-axis fringe tracking, phase referenced imaging, and high-accuracy narrow-angle astrometry. It is installed at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) and successfully servoed the fringe tracking loop during the initial commissioning phase. Unique among interferometric beam combiners, the FSU uses spatial phase modulation in bulk optics to retrieve real-time estimates of fringe phase after spatial filtering. A R=20 spectrometer across the K-band makes the retrieval of the group delay signal possible. The FSU was integrated and aligned at the VLTI in summer 2008. It yields phase and group delay measurements at sampling rates up to 2 kHz, which are used to drive the fringe tracking control loop. During the first commissioning runs, the FSU was used to track the fringes of stars with K-band magnitudes as faint as m_K=9.0, using two VLTI Auxiliary Telescopes (AT) and baselines of up to 96 m. Fringe tracking using two Very Large Telescope (VLT) Unit Telescopes (UT) was demonstrated.     Employing VLC technology for transmitting data in biological tissue

    Abstract. With the development in wireless communication methods, visible light communication (VLC), a subset of Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) has garnered much attention to employ the technology for a secure short-range wireless communication. We present a feasibility study to determine the performance of VLC in short range wireless transmission of data through biological tissue. VLC is a cost efficient and secure means of transmitting high volume of data wirelessly which can considerably reduce the interference issues caused by electromagnetic pulses and external electric fields. We present a simple measurement approach based on Monte Carlo simulation of photon propagation in tissue to estimate the strength of wireless communication with body implant devices. Using light for communication brings inherent security against unauthorized access of digital data which could be acquired from the low energy body implant devices used for medical diagnosis and other studies. This thesis discusses the typical components required to establish VLC such as, transmitter, receiver and the channel mediums. Furthermore, two cases of Monte Carlo simulation of photon-tissue interaction are studied to determine a possibility if VLC is a suitable substitute to radio frequency (RF) for a more wireless communication with the body implants. The process of theoretical measurement begins with conversion of light intensity into an electrical signal and an estimation of achievable data rate through a complex heterogeneous biological tissue model. The theoretically achieved data rates of the communication were found to be in the order of megabits per second (Mbps), ensuring a possibility to utilize this technology for short range reliable wireless communication with a wider range and application of implant medical devices. Biophotonics.fi presents a computational simulation of light propagation in different types of computational tissue models comprehensively validated by comparison with the team’s practical implementation of the same setup. This simulation is also used in this thesis (5.2.2) to approximate more accurate data rates of communication in case of a practical implementation

    A New Scheme for Spreading & De-spreading in the Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum Mechanism

    Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) and Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) techniques are widely used to implement code-division multiple access (CDMA) in wireless communication systems.  Both DSSS and FHSS systems help reducing the effects of interference on the transmitted information making it robust against channel impairments.  DSSS uses a signal bandwidth that is much broader than the information signal bandwidth.  Traditionally, the wide band signal is generated by multiplying the narrowband information signal with a binary code, often designated as a spreading code, to generate the wideband signal that is transmitted. The original information signal can be recreated at the receiver by multiplying the received wideband signal by the same binary code (now designated as a de-spreading code) used to generate the wideband transmitted signal.  To extract the original information signal, the spreading and de-spreading codes must be in synchronism at the receiver and amplitude match with each other.  A new modification for the direct sequence spread spectrum is proposed in this paper. The mechanism introduced in this approach implicates generating the wideband signal by circularly shifting the spreading code (PN) by n places, where n represents the value of the current byte of information signal. The yielded signal is modulated using BPSK modulator before transmitting it.  The original information signal is extracted at the receiver by correlating the received signal (which is actually the original spread sequence circularly shifted by n places) with a locally generated replica of the spreading code.  The position of the maximum value of the cross-correlation vector represents the value of the information signal byte.  The proposed configuration has been implemented using Simulink simulator and the obtained results show that its performance is identical with the conventional DSSS

    Developing and Testing an Anguilliform Robot Swimming with Theoretically High Hydrodynamic Efficiency

    An anguilliform swimming robot replicating an idealized motion is a complex marine vehicle necessitating both a theoretical and experimental analysis to completely understand its propulsion characteristics. The ideal anguilliform motion within is theorized to produce ``wakeless\u27\u27 swimming (Vorus, 2011), a reactive swimming technique that produces thrust by accelerations of the added mass in the vicinity of the body. The net circulation for the unsteady motion is theorized to be eliminated. The robot was designed to replicate the desired, theoretical motion by applying control theory methods. Independent joint control was used due to hardware limitations. The fluid velocity vectors in the propulsive wake downstream of the tethered, swimming robot were measured using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Simultaneously, a load cell measured the thrust (or drag) forces of the robot via a hydrodynamic tether. The measured field velocities and thrust forces were compared to the theoretical predictions for each. The desired, ideal motion was not replicated consistently during PIV testing, producing off-design scenarios. The thrust-computing method for the ideal motion was applied to the actual, recorded motion and compared to the load cell results. The theoretical field velocities were computed differently by accounting for shed vortices due to a different shape than ideal. The theoretical thrust shows trends similar to the measured thrust over time. Similarly promising comparisons are found between the theoretical and measured flow-field velocities with respect to qualitative trends and velocity magnitudes. The initial thrust coefficient prediction was deemed insufficient, and a new one was determined from an iterative process. The off-design cases shed flow structures into the downstream wake of the robot. The first is a residual disturbance of the shed boundary layer, which is to be expected for the ideal case, and dissipates within one motion cycle. The second are larger-order vortices that are being shed at two distinct times during a half-cycle. These qualitative and quantitative comparisons were used to confirm the possibility of the original hypothesis of ``wakeless\u27\u27 swimming. While the ideal motion could not be tested consistently, the results of the off-design cases agree significantly with the adjusted theoretical computations. This shows that the boundary conditions derived from slender-body constraints and the assumptions of ideal flow theory are sufficient enough to predict the propulsion characteristics of an anguilliform robot undergoing this specific motion

    Architectures and Algorithms for the Signal Processing of Advanced MIMO Radar Systems

    This thesis focuses on the research, development and implementation of novel concepts, architectures, demonstrator systems and algorithms for the signal processing of advanced Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) radar systems. The key concept is to address compact system, which have high resolutions and are able to perform a fast radar signal processing, three-dimensional (3D), and four-dimensional (4D) beamforming for radar image generation and target estimation. The idea is to obtain a complete sensing of range, Azimuth and elevation (additionally Doppler as the fourth dimension) from the targets in the radar captures. The radar technology investigated, aims at addressing sev- eral civil and military applications, such as surveillance and detection of targets, both air and ground based, and situational awareness, both in cars and in flying platforms, from helicopters, to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and air-taxis. Several major topics have been targeted. The development of complete systems and innovative FPGA, ARM and software based digital architectures for 3D imaging MIMO radars, which operate in both Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and Frequency Divi- sion Multiplexing (FDM) modes, with Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signals, respectively. The de- velopment of real-time radar signal processing, beamforming and Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) algorithms for target detection, with particular focus on FFT based, hardware implementable techniques. The study and implementation of advanced system concepts, parametrisation and simulation of next generation real-time digital radars (e.g. OFDM based). The design and development of novel constant envelope orthogonal waveforms for real-time 3D OFDM MIMO radar systems. The MIMO architectures presented in this thesis are a collection of system concepts, de- sign and simulations, as well as complete radar demonstrators systems, with indoor and outdoor measurements. Several of the results shown, come in the form of radar images which have been captured in field-test, in different scenarios, which aid in showing the proper functionality of the systems. The research activities for this thesis, have been carried out on the premises of Air- bus, based in Munich (Germany), as part of a Ph.D. candidate joint program between Airbus and the Polytechnic Department of Engineering and Architecture (Dipartimento Politecnico di Ingegneria e Architettura), of the University of Udine, based in Udine (Italy).Questa tesi si concentra sulla ricerca, lo sviluppo e l\u2019implementazione di nuovi concetti, architetture, sistemi dimostrativi e algoritmi per l\u2019elaborazione dei segnali in sistemi radar avanzati, basati su tecnologia Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO).     Data compression techniques applied to high resolution high frame rate video technology

    An investigation is presented of video data compression applied to microgravity space experiments using High Resolution High Frame Rate Video Technology (HHVT). An extensive survey of methods of video data compression, described in the open literature, was conducted. The survey examines compression methods employing digital computing. The results of the survey are presented. They include a description of each method and assessment of image degradation and video data parameters. An assessment is made of present and near term future technology for implementation of video data compression in high speed imaging system. Results of the assessment are discussed and summarized. The results of a study of a baseline HHVT video system, and approaches for implementation of video data compression, are presented. Case studies of three microgravity experiments are presented and specific compression techniques and implementations are recommended

    Six degrees of freedom estimation using monocular vision and moiré patterns

The objective is to acquire the six degree of freedom estimation that is essential for the operation of vehicles in close proximity to other craft and landing platforms. A target contains markers to determine relative orientation and locate two sets of orthogonal moire patterns at two different frequencies. A camera is mounted on a small vehicle with the target in the field of view. An algorithm processes the images extracting the attitude and position information of the camera relative to the target utilizing geometry and 4 single-point discrete Fourier transforms (DFTs) on the moire patterns. Manual and autonomous movement tests are conducted to determine the accuracy of the system relative to ground truth locations obtained through an external indoor positioning system. Position estimations with accompanying control techniques have been implemented including hovering, static platform landings, and dynamic platform landings to display the algorithm's ability to provide accurate information to precisely control the vehicle. The results confirm the moire target system's feasibility as a viable option for low-cost relative navigation for indoor and outdoor operations including landing on static and dynamic surfaces.by Glenn P.     Highly Efficient and Data Compressed Ultrafast Single-Pixel Imaging based on Photonic Time-Stretch

    The research presented in this thesis is focused on highly efficient and data compressed ultrafast single pixel imaging (SPI) systems based on photonic time stretch (PTS) technique. Three ultrafast SPI systems are presented and analysed with unique features of low-cost, compact, highly efficient and optical data compression. The first ultrafast SPI system is a highly efficient, fibre-compatible ultrafast imaging system based on PTS using a 45° tilted fibre grating (45° TFG). The 45° TFG serves as an in-fibre lateral diffraction element, replacing bulky and lossy free- space diffraction gratings in conventional PTS imaging systems. This new design significantly reduces the volume of conventional PTS imaging systems, improves energy efficiency and system stability. A proof-of-principle demonstration of our proposed PTS imaging system is performed for the first time with improved spatial resolution and ultrafast detecting speed of 46 m/s. Secondly, data compressed ultrafast photonic time stretch imaging is investigated with the help of a spatial mask for spatial domain compressed sensing. In practice, a spatial light modulator (SLM) is utilized as a passive optical random pattern modulator, namely, spatial mask, in spatial domain. This combines the benefit of compressed sensing (CS) and PTS techniques. And a high speed CS imaging system is obtained with a compression ratio of 55.6%. Besides, time-domain CS applied in ultrafast real-time optical coherent tomography (OCT) is experimentally demonstrated as well. Finally, an all-optical CS imaging system based on PTS and multimode interference using a multimode fibre (MMF) is demonstrated. The MMF acts as a low-cost random optical speckle pattern generator based on ultrafast wavelength tuning in PTS. Each wavelength of the optical light generates a repeatable and stable random optical speckle pattern, which has the feature of low- correlated relation between different optical speckle patterns. This technique can overcome the speed limit in existing CS photonic time stretch imaging, where imaging speed is much lower than the pulse repetition rate
