    Federated-ANN based Critical Path Analysis and Health Recommendations for MapReduce Workflows in Consumer Electronics Applications

    Although much research has been done to improve the performance of big data systems, predicting the performance degradation of these systems quickly and efficiently remains a significant challenge. Unfortunately, the complexity of big data systems is so vast that predicting performance degradation ahead of time is quite tricky. Long execution time is often discussed in the context of performance degradation of big data systems. This paper proposes MrPath, a Federated AI-based critical path analysis approach for holistic performance prediction of MapReduce workflows for consumer electronics applications while enabling root-cause analysis of various types of faults. We have implemented a federated artificial neural network (FANN) to predict the critical path in a MapReduce workflow. After the critical path components (e.g., mapper1, reducer2) are predicted/detected, root cause analysis uses user-defined functions (UDF) to pinpoint the most likely reasons for the observed performance problems. Finally, health node classification is performed using an ANN-based Self-Organising Map (SOM). The results show that the AI-based critical path analysis method can significantly illuminate the reasons behind the long execution time in big data systems

    Data mining and predictive analytics application on cellular networks to monitor and optimize quality of service and customer experience

    This research study focuses on the application models of Data Mining and Machine Learning covering cellular network traffic, in the objective to arm Mobile Network Operators with full view of performance branches (Services, Device, Subscribers). The purpose is to optimize and minimize the time to detect service and subscriber patterns behaviour. Different data mining techniques and predictive algorithms have been applied on real cellular network datasets to uncover different data usage patterns using specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Key Quality Indicators (KQI). The following tools will be used to develop the concept: RStudio for Machine Learning and process visualization, Apache Spark, SparkSQL for data and big data processing and clicData for service Visualization. Two use cases have been studied during this research. In the first study, the process of Data and predictive Analytics are fully applied in the field of Telecommunications to efficiently address users’ experience, in the goal of increasing customer loyalty and decreasing churn or customer attrition. Using real cellular network transactions, prediction analytics are used to predict customers who are likely to churn, which can result in revenue loss. Prediction algorithms and models including Classification Tree, Random Forest, Neural Networks and Gradient boosting have been used with an exploratory Data Analysis, determining relationship between predicting variables. The data is segmented in to two, a training set to train the model and a testing set to test the model. The evaluation of the best performing model is based on the prediction accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and the Confusion Matrix on the test set. The second use case analyses Service Quality Management using modern data mining techniques and the advantages of in-memory big data processing with Apache Spark and SparkSQL to save cost on tool investment; thus, a low-cost Service Quality Management model is proposed and analyzed. With increase in Smart phone adoption, access to mobile internet services, applications such as streaming, interactive chats require a certain service level to ensure customer satisfaction. As a result, an SQM framework is developed with Service Quality Index (SQI) and Key Performance Index (KPI). The research concludes with recommendations and future studies around modern technology applications in Telecommunications including Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud and recommender systems.Cellular networks have evolved and are still evolving, from traditional GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) Circuit switched which only supported voice services and extremely low data rate, to LTE all Packet networks accommodating high speed data used for various service applications such as video streaming, video conferencing, heavy torrent download; and for say in a near future the roll-out of the Fifth generation (5G) cellular networks, intended to support complex technologies such as IoT (Internet of Things), High Definition video streaming and projected to cater massive amount of data. With high demand on network services and easy access to mobile phones, billions of transactions are performed by subscribers. The transactions appear in the form of SMSs, Handovers, voice calls, web browsing activities, video and audio streaming, heavy downloads and uploads. Nevertheless, the stormy growth in data traffic and the high requirements of new services introduce bigger challenges to Mobile Network Operators (NMOs) in analysing the big data traffic flowing in the network. Therefore, Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) turn in to a challenge. Inefficiency in mining, analysing data and applying predictive intelligence on network traffic can produce high rate of unhappy customers or subscribers, loss on revenue and negative services’ perspective. Researchers and Service Providers are investing in Data mining, Machine Learning and AI (Artificial Intelligence) methods to manage services and experience.     Performance and Reliability Evaluation of Apache Kafka Messaging System

    Streaming data is now flowing across various devices and applications around us. This type of data means any unbounded, ever growing, infinite data set which is continuously generated by all kinds of sources. Examples include sensor data transmitted among different Internet of Things (IoT) devices, user activity records collected on websites and payment requests sent from mobile devices. In many application scenarios, streaming data needs to be processed in real-time because its value can be futile over time. A variety of stream processing systems have been developed in the last decade and are evolving to address rising challenges. A typical stream processing system consists of multiple processing nodes in the topology of a DAG (directed acyclic graph). To build real-time streaming data pipelines across those nodes, message middleware technology is widely applied. As a distributed messaging system with high durability and scalability, Apache Kafka has become very popular among modern companies. It ingests streaming data from upstream applications and store the data in its distributed cluster, which provides a fault-tolerant data source for stream processors. Therefore, Kafka plays a critical role to ensure the completeness, correctness and timeliness of streaming data delivery. However, it is impossible to meet all the user requirements in real-time cases with a simple and fixed data delivery strategy. In this thesis, we address the challenge of choosing a proper configuration to guarantee both performance and reliability of Kafka for complex streaming application scenarios. We investigate the features that have an impact on the performance and reliability metrics. We propose a queueing based prediction model to predict the performance metrics, including producer throughput and packet latency of Kafka. We define two reliability metrics, the probability of message loss and the probability of message duplication. We create an ANN model to predict these metrics given unstable network metrics like network delay and packet loss rate. To collect sufficient training data we build a Docker-based Kafka testbed with a fault injection module. We use a new quality-of-service metric, timely throughput to help us choosing proper batch size in Kafka. Based on this metric, we propose a dynamic configuration method, which reactively guarantees both performance and reliability of Kafka under complex operation conditions

    Personalized large scale classification of public tenders on hadoop

    Ce projet a été réalisé dans le cadre d’un partenariat entre Fujitsu Canada et Université Laval. Les besoins du projets ont été centrés sur une problématique d’affaire définie conjointement avec Fujitsu. Le projet consistait à classifier un corpus d’appels d’offres électroniques avec une approche orienté big data. L’objectif était d’identifier avec un très fort rappel les offres pertinentes au domaine d’affaire de l’entreprise. Après une séries d’expérimentations à petite échelle qui nous ont permise d’illustrer empiriquement (93% de rappel) l’efficacité de notre approche basé sur l’algorithme BNS (Bi-Normal Separation), nous avons implanté un système complet qui exploite l’infrastructure technologique big data Hadoop. Nos expérimentations sur le système complet démontrent qu’il est possible d’obtenir une performance de classification tout aussi efficace à grande échelle (91% de rappel) tout en exploitant les gains de performance rendus possible par l’architecture distribuée de Hadoop.This project was completed as part of an innovation partnership with Fujitsu Canada and Université Laval. The needs and objectives of the project were centered on a business problem defined jointly with Fujitsu. Our project aimed to classify a corpus of electronic public tenders based on state of the art Hadoop big data technology. The objective was to identify with high recall public tenders relevant to the IT services business of Fujitsu Canada. A small scale prototype based on the BNS algorithm (Bi-Normal Separation) was empirically shown to classify with high recall (93%) the public tender corpus. The prototype was then re-implemented on a full scale Hadoop cluster using Apache Pig for the data preparation pipeline and using Apache Mahout for classification. Our experimentation show that the large scale system not only maintains high recall (91%) on the classification task, but can readily take advantage of the massive scalability gains made possible by Hadoop’s distributed architecture

    BigDL: A Distributed Deep Learning Framework for Big Data

    This paper presents BigDL (a distributed deep learning framework for Apache Spark), which has been used by a variety of users in the industry for building deep learning applications on production big data platforms. It allows deep learning applications to run on the Apache Hadoop/Spark cluster so as to directly process the production data, and as a part of the end-to-end data analysis pipeline for deployment and management. Unlike existing deep learning frameworks, BigDL implements distributed, data parallel training directly on top of the functional compute model (with copy-on-write and coarse-grained operations) of Spark. We also share real-world experience and "war stories" of users that have adopted BigDL to address their challenges(i.e., how to easily build end-to-end data analysis and deep learning pipelines for their production data).Comment: In ACM Symposium of Cloud Computing conference (SoCC) 201
