    Adaptive Multi-Class Audio Classification in Noisy In-Vehicle Environment

    With ever-increasing number of car-mounted electric devices and their complexity, audio classification is increasingly important for the automotive industry as a fundamental tool for human-device interactions. Existing approaches for audio classification, however, fall short as the unique and dynamic audio characteristics of in-vehicle environments are not appropriately taken into account. In this paper, we develop an audio classification system that classifies an audio stream into music, speech, speech+music, and noise, adaptably depending on driving environments including highway, local road, crowded city, and stopped vehicle. More than 420 minutes of audio data including various genres of music, speech, speech+music, and noise are collected from diverse driving environments. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach improves the average classification accuracy up to 166%, and 64% for speech, and speech+music, respectively, compared with a non-adaptive approach in our experimental settings

    Music is a complicated form of communication, where creators and culture communicate and expose their individuality. After music digitalization took place, recommendation systems and other online services have become indispensable in the field of Music Information Retrieval (MIR). To build these systems and recommend the right choice of song to the user, classification of songs is required. In this paper, we propose an approach for finding similarity between music based on mid-level attributes like pitch, midi value corresponding to pitch, interval, contour and duration and applying text based classification techniques. Our system predicts jazz, metal and ragtime for western music. The experiment to predict the genre of music is conducted based on 450 music files and maximum accuracy achieved is 95.8% across different n-grams. We have also analyzed the Indian classical Carnatic music and are classifying them based on its raga. Our system predicts Sankarabharam, Mohanam and Sindhubhairavi ragas. The experiment to predict the raga of the song is conducted based on 95 music files and the maximum accuracy achieved is 90.3% across different n-grams.     Using Generic Summarization to Improve Music Information Retrieval Tasks

    In order to satisfy processing time constraints, many MIR tasks process only a segment of the whole music signal. This practice may lead to decreasing performance, since the most important information for the tasks may not be in those processed segments. In this paper, we leverage generic summarization algorithms, previously applied to text and speech summarization, to summarize items in music datasets. These algorithms build summaries, that are both concise and diverse, by selecting appropriate segments from the input signal which makes them good candidates to summarize music as well. We evaluate the summarization process on binary and multiclass music genre classification tasks, by comparing the performance obtained using summarized datasets against the performances obtained using continuous segments (which is the traditional method used for addressing the previously mentioned time constraints) and full songs of the same original dataset. We show that GRASSHOPPER, LexRank, LSA, MMR, and a Support Sets-based Centrality model improve classification performance when compared to selected 30-second baselines. We also show that summarized datasets lead to a classification performance whose difference is not statistically significant from using full songs.     On the Application of Generic Summarization Algorithms to Music

    Several generic summarization algorithms were developed in the past and successfully applied in fields such as text and speech summarization. In this paper, we review and apply these algorithms to music. To evaluate this summarization's performance, we adopt an extrinsic approach: we compare a Fado Genre Classifier's performance using truncated contiguous clips against the summaries extracted with those algorithms on 2 different datasets. We show that Maximal Marginal Relevance (MMR), LexRank and Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) all improve classification performance in both datasets used for testing.Comment: 12 pages, 1 table; Submitted to IEEE Signal Processing Letter
