Infinite Factorial Finite State Machine for Blind Multiuser Channel Estimation
New communication standards need to deal with machine-to-machine
communications, in which users may start or stop transmitting at any time in an
asynchronous manner. Thus, the number of users is an unknown and time-varying
parameter that needs to be accurately estimated in order to properly recover
the symbols transmitted by all users in the system. In this paper, we address
the problem of joint channel parameter and data estimation in a multiuser
communication channel in which the number of transmitters is not known. For
that purpose, we develop the infinite factorial finite state machine model, a
Bayesian nonparametric model based on the Markov Indian buffet that allows for
an unbounded number of transmitters with arbitrary channel length. We propose
an inference algorithm that makes use of slice sampling and particle Gibbs with
ancestor sampling. Our approach is fully blind as it does not require a prior
channel estimation step, prior knowledge of the number of transmitters, or any
signaling information. Our experimental results, loosely based on the LTE
random access channel, show that the proposed approach can effectively recover
the data-generating process for a wide range of scenarios, with varying number
of transmitters, number of receivers, constellation order, channel length, and
signal-to-noise ratio.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figure
MIMO-aided near-capacity turbo transceivers: taxonomy and performance versus complexity
In this treatise, we firstly review the associated Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system theory and review the family of hard-decision and soft-decision based detection algorithms in the context of Spatial Division Multiplexing (SDM) systems. Our discussions culminate in the introduction of a range of powerful novel MIMO detectors, such as for example Markov Chain assisted Minimum Bit-Error Rate (MC-MBER) detectors, which are capable of reliably operating in the challenging high-importance rank-deficient scenarios, where there are more transmitters than receivers and hence the resultant channel-matrix becomes non-invertible. As a result, conventional detectors would exhibit a high residual error floor. We then invoke the Soft-Input Soft-Output (SISO) MIMO detectors for creating turbo-detected two- or three-stage concatenated SDM schemes and investigate their attainable performance in the light of their computational complexity. Finally, we introduce the powerful design tools of EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT)-charts and characterize the achievable performance of the diverse near- capacity SISO detectors with the aid of EXIT charts

Particle filtering for joint symbol and code delay estimation in DS spread spectrum systems in multipath environment
We develop a new receiver for joint symbol, channel characteristics, and code delay estimation for DS spread spectrum systems under conditions of multipath fading. The approach is based on particle filtering techniques and combines sequential importance sampling, a selection scheme, and a variance reduction technique. Several algorithms involving both deterministic and randomized schemes are considered and an extensive simulation study is carried out in order to demonstrate the performance of the proposed methods.RIGHTS : This article is licensed under the BioMed Central licence at http://www.biomedcentral.com/about/license which is similar to the 'Creative Commons Attribution Licence'. A Linear Multi-User Detector for STBC MC-CDMA Systems based on the Adaptive Implementation of the Minimum-Conditional Bit-Error-Rate Criterion and on Genetic Algorithm-assisted MMSE Channel Estimation
The implementation of efficient baseband receivers characterized by affordable computational load is a crucial point in the development of transmission systems exploiting diversity in different domains. In this paper, we are proposing a linear multi-user detector for MIMO MC-CDMA systems with Alamouti’s Space-Time Block Coding, inspired by the concept of Minimum Conditional Bit-Error-Rate (MCBER) and relying on Genetic-Algorithm (GA)-assisted MMSE channel estimation. The MCBER combiner has been implemented in adaptive way by using Least-Mean-Square (LMS) optimization. Firstly, we shall analyze the proposed adaptive MCBER MUD receiver with ideal knowledge of Channel Status Information (CSI). Afterwards, we shall consider the complete receiver structure, encompassing also the non-ideal GA-assisted channel estimation. Simulation results evidenced that the proposed MCBER receiver always outperforms state-of-the-art receiver schemes based on EGC and MMSE criterion exploiting the same degree of channel knowledge (i.e. ideal or estimated CSI)

Duality between Coronavirus Transmission and Air-based Macroscopic Molecular Communication
This contribution exploits the duality between a viral infection process and
macroscopic air-based molecular communication. Airborne aerosol and droplet
transmission through human respiratory processes is modeled as an instance of a
multiuser molecular communication scenario employing respiratory-event-driven
molecular variable-concentration shift keying. Modeling is aided by experiments
that are motivated by a macroscopic air-based molecular communication testbed.
In artificially induced coughs, a saturated aqueous solution containing a
fluorescent dye mixed with saliva is released by an adult test person. The
emitted particles are made visible by means of optical detection exploiting the
fluorescent dye. The number of particles recorded is significantly higher in
test series without mouth and nose protection than in those with a wellfitting
medical mask. A simulation tool for macroscopic molecular communication
processes is extended and used for estimating the transmission of infectious
aerosols in different environments. Towards this goal, parameters obtained
through self experiments are taken. The work is inspired by the recent outbreak
of the coronavirus pandemic.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Molecular,
