An Improved Approach for Contrast Enhancement of Spinal Cord Images based on Multiscale Retinex Algorithm
This paper presents a new approach for contrast enhancement of spinal cord
medical images based on multirate scheme incorporated into multiscale retinex
algorithm. The proposed work here uses HSV color space, since HSV color space
separates color details from intensity. The enhancement of medical image is
achieved by down sampling the original image into five versions, namely, tiny,
small, medium, fine, and normal scale. This is due to the fact that the each
versions of the image when independently enhanced and reconstructed results in
enormous improvement in the visual quality. Further, the contrast stretching
and MultiScale Retinex (MSR) techniques are exploited in order to enhance each
of the scaled version of the image. Finally, the enhanced image is obtained by
combining each of these scales in an efficient way to obtain the composite
enhanced image. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is validated by using
a wavelet energy metric in the wavelet domain. Reconstructed image using
proposed method highlights the details (edges and tissues), reduces image noise
(Gaussian and Speckle) and improves the overall contrast. The proposed
algorithm also enhances sharp edges of the tissue surrounding the spinal cord
regions which is useful for diagnosis of spinal cord lesions. Elaborated
experiments are conducted on several medical images and results presented show
that the enhanced medical pictures are of good quality and is found to be

Patch-type Segmentation of Voxel Shapes using Simplified Surface Skeletons
We present a new method for decomposing a 3D voxel shape into disjoint segments using the shapeās simplified surface-skeleton. The surface skeleton of a shape consists of 2D manifolds inside its volume. Each skeleton point has a maximally inscribed ball that touches the boundary in at least two contact points. A key observation is that the boundaries of the simplified fore- and background skeletons map one-to-one to increasingly fuzzy, soft convex, respectively concave, edges of the shape. Using this property, we build a method for segmentation of 3D shapes which has several desirable properties. Our method segments both noisy shapes and shapes with soft edges which vanish over low-curvature regions. Multiscale segmentations can be obtained by varying the simplification level of the skeleton. We present a voxel-based implementation of our approach and illustrate it on several realistic examples.
BLADE: Filter Learning for General Purpose Computational Photography
The Rapid and Accurate Image Super Resolution (RAISR) method of Romano,
Isidoro, and Milanfar is a computationally efficient image upscaling method
using a trained set of filters. We describe a generalization of RAISR, which we
name Best Linear Adaptive Enhancement (BLADE). This approach is a trainable
edge-adaptive filtering framework that is general, simple, computationally
efficient, and useful for a wide range of problems in computational
photography. We show applications to operations which may appear in a camera
pipeline including denoising, demosaicing, and stylization
Supervised Content based Image Retrieval using Fuzzy Texton and Shearlet Transform
In this paper we proposed, a novel framework to assist and automate the diagnosis of diseases from computer-based image analysis method using Content-based image retrieval (CBIR). CBIR is the process of retrieving related images from large database collections by using low level image features such as color, texture and shape etc. we have used fuzzy texton and discrete shearlet transform to extract texture and shape features. The aim is to support decision making by retrieving and displaying relevant past cases visually similar to the one under examination with relevance feedback using Support Vector Machines

Using this property, we build a method for segmentation of 3D shapes which has several desirable properties. Our method robustly segments both noisy shapes and shapes with soft edges which vanish over low-curvature regions. As the segmentation is based on the skeleton, it reflects the symmetry of the input shape. Finally, multiscale segmentations can be obtained by varying the simplification level of the skeleton. We present a voxel-based implementation of our approach and demonstrate it on several examples.
