    Architectural Support for High-Performance, Power-Efficient and Secure Multiprocessor Systems

    High performance systems have been widely adopted in many fields and the demand for better performance is constantly increasing. And the need of powerful yet flexible systems is also increasing to meet varying application requirements from diverse domains. Also, power efficiency in high performance computing has been one of the major issues to be resolved. The power density of core components becomes significantly higher, and the fraction of power supply in total management cost is dominant. Providing dependability is also a main concern in large-scale systems since more hardware resources can be abused by attackers. Therefore, designing high-performance, power-efficient and secure systems is crucial to provide adequate performance as well as reliability to users. Adhering to using traditional design methodologies for large-scale computing systems has a limit to meet the demand under restricted resource budgets. Interconnecting a large number of uniprocessor chips to build parallel processing systems is not an efficient solution in terms of performance and power. Chip multiprocessor (CMP) integrates multiple processing cores and caches on a chip and is thought of as a good alternative to previous design trends. In this dissertation, we deal with various design issues of high performance multiprocessor systems based on CMP to achieve both performance and power efficiency while maintaining security. First, we propose a fast and secure off-chip interconnects through minimizing network overheads and providing an efficient security mechanism. Second, we propose architectural support for fast and efficient memory protection in CMP systems, making the best use of the characteristics in CMP environments and multi-threaded workloads. Third, we propose a new router design for network-on-chip (NoC) based on a new memory technique. We introduce hybrid input buffers that use both SRAM and STT-MRAM for better performance as well as power efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes improve the performance of off-chip networks through reducing the message size by 54% on average. Also, the schemes diminish the overheads of bounds checking operations, thus enhancing the overall performance by 11% on average. Adopting hybrid buffers in NoC routers contributes to increasing the network throughput up to 21%

    Digital signal processor fundamentals and system design

    Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) have been used in accelerator systems for more than fifteen years and have largely contributed to the evolution towards digital technology of many accelerator systems, such as machine protection, diagnostics and control of beams, power supply and motors. This paper aims at familiarising the reader with DSP fundamentals, namely DSP characteristics and processing development. Several DSP examples are given, in particular on Texas Instruments DSPs, as they are used in the DSP laboratory companion of the lectures this paper is based upon. The typical system design flow is described; common difficulties, problems and choices faced by DSP developers are outlined; and hints are given on the best solution

    GridSim: A Toolkit for the Modeling and Simulation of Distributed Resource Management and Scheduling for Grid Computing

    Clusters, grids, and peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have emerged as popular paradigms for next generation parallel and distributed computing. The management of resources and scheduling of applications in such large-scale distributed systems is a complex undertaking. In order to prove the effectiveness of resource brokers and associated scheduling algorithms, their performance needs to be evaluated under different scenarios such as varying number of resources and users with different requirements. In a grid environment, it is hard and even impossible to perform scheduler performance evaluation in a repeatable and controllable manner as resources and users are distributed across multiple organizations with their own policies. To overcome this limitation, we have developed a Java-based discrete-event grid simulation toolkit called GridSim. The toolkit supports modeling and simulation of heterogeneous grid resources (both time- and space-shared), users and application models. It provides primitives for creation of application tasks, mapping of tasks to resources, and their management. To demonstrate suitability of the GridSim toolkit, we have simulated a Nimrod-G like grid resource broker and evaluated the performance of deadline and budget constrained cost- and time-minimization scheduling algorithms

    Design and Implementation of High QoS 3D-NoC using Modified Double Particle Swarm Optimization on FPGA

    One technique to overcome the exponential growth bottleneck is to increase the number of cores on a processor, although having too many cores might cause issues including chip overheating and communication blockage. The problem of the communication bottleneck on the chip is presently effectively resolved by networks-on-chip (NoC). A 3D stack of chips is now possible, thanks to recent developments in IC manufacturing techniques, enabling to reduce of chip area while increasing chip throughput and reducing power consumption. The automated process associated with mapping applications to form three-dimensional NoC architectures is a significant new path in 3D NoC research. This work proposes a 3D NoC partitioning approach that can identify the 3D NoC region that has to be mapped. A double particle swarm optimization (DPSO) inspired algorithmic technique, which may combine the characteristics having neighbourhood search and genetic architectures, also addresses the challenge of a particle swarm algorithm descending into local optimal solutions. Experimental evidence supports the claim that this hybrid optimization algorithm based on Double Particle Swarm Optimisation outperforms the conventional heuristic technique in terms of output rate and loss in energy. The findings demonstrate that in a network of the same size, the newly introduced router delivers the lowest loss on the longest path.  Three factors, namely energy, latency or delay, and throughput, are compared between the suggested 3D mesh ONoC and its 2D version. When comparing power consumption between 3D ONoC and its electronic and 2D equivalents, which both have 512 IP cores, it may save roughly 79.9% of the energy used by the electronic counterpart and 24.3% of the energy used by the latter. The network efficiency of the 3D mesh ONoC is simulated by DPSO in a variety of configurations. The outcomes also demonstrate an increase in performance over the 2D ONoC. As a flexible communication solution, Network-On-Chips (NoCs) have been frequently employed in the development of multiprocessor system-on-chips (MPSoCs). By outsourcing their communication activities, NoCs permit on-chip Intellectual Property (IP) cores to communicate with one another and function at a better level. The important components in assigning application duties, distributing the work to the IPs, and coordinating communication among them are mapping and scheduling methods. This study aims to present an entirely advanced form of research in the area of 3D NoC mapping and scheduling applications, grouping the results according to various parameters and offering several suggestions for further research

    dissertationThe embedded system space is characterized by a rapid evolution in the complexity and functionality of applications. In addition, the short time-to-market nature of the business motivates the use of programmable devices capable of meeting the conflicting constraints of low-energy, high-performance, and short design times. The keys to achieving these conflicting constraints are specialization and maximally extracting available application parallelism. General purpose processors are flexible but are either too power hungry or lack the necessary performance. Application-specific integrated circuits (ASICS) efficiently meet the performance and power needs but are inflexible. Programmable domain-specific architectures (DSAs) are an attractive middle ground, but their design requires significant time, resources, and expertise in a variety of specialties, which range from application algorithms to architecture and ultimately, circuit design. This dissertation presents CoGenE, a design framework that automates the design of energy-performance-optimal DSAs for embedded systems. For a given application domain and a user-chosen initial architectural specification, CoGenE consists of a a Compiler to generate execution binary, a simulator Generator to collect performance/energy statistics, and an Explorer that modifies the current architecture to improve energy-performance-area characteristics. The above process repeats automatically until the user-specified constraints are achieved. This removes or alleviates the time needed to understand the application, manually design the DSA, and generate object code for the DSA. Thus, CoGenE is a new design methodology that represents a significant improvement in performance, energy dissipation, design time, and resources. This dissertation employs the face recognition domain to showcase a flexible architectural design methodology that creates "ASIC-like" DSAs. The DSAs are instruction set architecture (ISA)-independent and achieve good energy-performance characteristics by coscheduling the often conflicting constraints of data access, data movement, and computation through a flexible interconnect. This represents a significant increase in programming complexity and code generation time. To address this problem, the CoGenE compiler employs integer linear programming (ILP)-based 'interconnect-aware' scheduling techniques for automatic code generation. The CoGenE explorer employs an iterative technique to search the complete design space and select a set of energy-performance-optimal candidates. When compared to manual designs, results demonstrate that CoGenE produces superior designs for three application domains: face recognition, speech recognition and wireless telephony. While CoGenE is well suited to applications that exhibit a streaming behavior, multithreaded applications like ray tracing present a different but important challenge. To demonstrate its generality, CoGenE is evaluated in designing a novel multicore N-wide SIMD architecture, known as StreamRay, for the ray tracing domain. CoGenE is used to synthesize the SIMD execution cores, the compiler that generates the application binary, and the interconnection subsystem. Further, separating address and data computations in space reduces data movement and contention for resources, thereby significantly improving performance compared to existing ray tracing approaches
