    ISDN at NASA Lewis Research Center

    An expository investigation of the potential impact of the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) at NASA Lewis Research Center is described. To properly frame the subject, the paper contains a detailed survey of the components of Narrowband ISDN. The principles and objectives are presented as decreed by the Consultative Committee for International Telephone and Telegraph (CCITT). The various channel types are delineated and their associated service combinations are described. The subscriber-access network functions are explained pictorially via the ISDN reference configuration. A section on switching techniques is presented to enable the reader to understand the emergence of the concept of fast packet switching. This new technology is designed to operate over the high bandwidth, low error rate transmission media that characterizes the LeRC environment. A brief introduction to the next generation of networks is covered with sections on Broadband ISDM (B-ISDN), Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and Synchronous Optical Networks (SONET). Applications at LeRC are presented, first in terms of targets of opportunity, then in light of compatibility constraints. In-place pilot projects and testing are described that demonstrate actual usage at LeRC

    Applications of satellite technology to broadband ISDN networks

    Two satellite architectures for delivering broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) service are evaluated. The first is assumed integral to an existing terrestrial network, and provides complementary services such as interconnects to remote nodes as well as high-rate multicast and broadcast service. The interconnects are at a 155 Mbs rate and are shown as being met with a nonregenerative multibeam satellite having 10-1.5 degree spots. The second satellite architecture focuses on providing private B-ISDN networks as well as acting as a gateway to the public network. This is conceived as being provided by a regenerative multibeam satellite with on-board ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) processing payload. With up to 800 Mbs offered, higher satellite EIRP is required. This is accomplished with 12-0.4 degree hopping beams, covering a total of 110 dwell positions. It is estimated the space segment capital cost for architecture one would be about 190Mwhereasthesecondarchitecturewouldbeabout190M whereas the second architecture would be about 250M. The net user cost is given for a variety of scenarios, but the cost for 155 Mbs services is shown to be about $15-22/minute for 25 percent system utilization

    ATM networks are intended to provide a "one-size-fits-all" solution to a variety of data communication needs, from low speed, delay-insensitive to high-speed, delay-intolerant. The basic ATM protocol certainly delivers traffic within this broad range, but it does not address the quality of service requirements associated with the various type of traffic. The ATMSW1TCH is designed to use two different mechanisms to provide the quality of service for the various type of traffic. It treats the cells according to their connected virtual channel type and services them as predefined scheme. The ATMSWITCH architecture is a shared-memory and output buffer strategy switch. The switch has been designed much of buffer location and identification can occur in parallel with the 12ns read/write cycle time required to buffer the cell data. The problem is essentially one of design circuitry so that buffer location and identification are as short as possible. The present project has therefore been intended to measure the number of clock cycles required to perform the buffer maintenance activities, and to determine whether the logic speed required to fit this number of clock cycles into the 12ns window is feasible using current technology. The simulated result and timing analysis shows that 10 clock cycles are required during 12ns buffer read and write time, and a reasonable clock speed is 1.2ns per clock cycle

    In the 90s, there is an increasing demand for new telecommunication services such as video conferencing, videophone, broadcast television, image transfer and bulk file transfe r etc. At the same time, transmission systems at bit rates of 2.5 Gb/s are now being installed, and the expected next generation of 10 Gb/s systems is emerging from the research laboratories. Coupled with that the development and deployment of new technologies systems such as fiber optics and intelligent high-speed switches have made it possible to provide these services in future high-speed integrated services networks like Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). However, because of their new characteristics, these new services pose great challenges not previously encountered in traditional circuitswitche d or packet switched networks. For example, feature s such as large propagation delay as compared to transmission delay, diverse application demands, constraints on call processing capacity, and Quality-Of-Service (QOS) support for different applications all present new challenges arising from the new technology and new applications. Thus, much research is needed not just to improve existing technologies, but to seek a fundamentally different approach toward network architectures and protocols. In particular, new bandwidth allocation and call admission control algorithms need to be studied to meet these new challenges. A VP bandwidth allocation problem is studied for services which requires guaranteed connection for a fixed duration of time leading to extensive use of facilities like reservations of transmission capacity in advance. In such a case, the network may offer discounts for users reserving capacities in advance due to the advantage of working with predetermined traffic loads. Similarly, charges may differ for customers wanting to book capacity for a specified tie interval. Based on this scenario, various charge classes and booking policies are introduced. An effective bandwidth allocation scheme is proposed at the VP level with multiple nested charge classes where these various classes are allocated bandwidth optimally through some booking policies'. The scheme is also shown to be effective in maximizing network revenue. The best tradeoff between revenue gained through greater demand for discount bandwidth units against revenue lost when full-charge bookings request must be turned away because of prior bookings of discount bandwidth units is also sought for

    Many video images are transmitted around the CERN site. The main sources of these images are the beam observation cameras in the accelerators, site and machine access control cameras, and "teletext" pages showing various information such as machine status. Other images transmitted around the site include broadcasts of important meetings between conference rooms. Many methods of transmission and distribution of these images are in use. Some of the systems in use date from the very early days of the laboratory, whereas the newest systems use the latest technology. This paper will give an overview of the systems in use at CERN today, and present different options for rationalisation

    Integration Protocols for Voice and Data Traffic

    Increasing demands for multimedia services offer integration of multimedia traffic as a hot issue in the future research areas. As a result, in the literature, many multiplexing schemes have been proposed. However, most of them have been implemented with a high complexity, others may be non-effective to satisfy the multiplexing performance criteria, while the rest are still not subjected to a wide range of analysis. Therefore, there is a critical need for comparing some of the recommended multiplexing schemes as well as developing a simple and effective integration protocol while still achieving reasonable bandwidth utilization. This thesis is intended to examine integration protocols for multimedia traffic, with primary focusing on voice-data integration. Firstly, a survey of the existing multiplexing schemes and related issues are presented. Next, an Adaptive Round Robin (ARR) protocol is proposed, as an alternative for voice-data integration, and extensively simulated. Finally, further comparisons, based on computer simulations, are carried out for various multiplexing schemes including Strictly Priority Servicing (SPS), Fixed Round Robin (FRR), Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation/(T1, T2) and Queue Length Threshold (QLT).As a contribution of the thesis, the proposed protocol tries to avoid the drawbacks of the previous multiplexing schemes besides satisfying the multiplexing performance criteria. The protocol differs from the others in that, it gives a limited priority for voice over data, it organizes the incoming packets to the single First-in First-out (FIFO) output buffer rather than the only outgoing scheduling, i.e., all data sources are polled in order according to the adaptation policy; however, before a data source can send a packet, all active voice sources are polled in order. Thus it provides an improvement in voice delay performance without significant effect on data delay performance over previous protocols. In addition, simulation comparisons between various multiplexing schemes have been discussed. In these simulations voice packets are assumed to be generated from on-off sources (talkspurt-silence calls), which is closer to reality and which is not considered in most of the performance analyses of previous schemes

    Simulation and analytical performance studies of generic atm switch fabrics.

    As technology improves exciting new services such as video phone become possible and economically viable but their deployment is hampered by the inability of the present networks to carry them. The long term vision is to have a single network able to carry all present and future services. Asynchronous Transfer Mode, ATM, is the versatile new packet -based switching and multiplexing technique proposed for the single network. Interest in ATM is currently high as both industrial and academic institutions strive to understand more about the technique. Using both simulation and analysis, this research has investigated how the performance of ATM switches is affected by architectural variations in the switch fabric design and how the stochastic nature of ATM affects the timing of constant bit rate services. As a result the research has contributed new ATM switch performance data, a general purpose ATM switch simulator and analytic models that further research may utilise and has uncovered a significant timing problem of the ATM technique. The thesis will also be of interest and assistance to anyone planning on using simulation as a research tool to model an ATM switch

    Traditionele Internetgebaseerde diensten voor het verspreiden van bestanden, zoals Web browsen en het versturen van e-mails, worden aangeboden via één centrale server. Meer recente netwerkdiensten zoals interactieve digitale televisie of video-op-aanvraag vereisen echter hoge kwaliteitsgaranties (QoS), zoals een lage en constante netwerkvertraging, en verbruiken een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid bandbreedte op het netwerk. Architecturen met één centrale server kunnen deze garanties moeilijk bieden en voldoen daarom niet meer aan de hoge eisen van de volgende generatie multimediatoepassingen. In dit onderzoek worden daarom nieuwe netwerkarchitecturen bestudeerd, die een dergelijke dienstkwaliteit kunnen ondersteunen. Zowel peer-to-peer mechanismes, zoals bij het uitwisselen van muziekbestanden tussen eindgebruikers, als servergebaseerde oplossingen, zoals gedistribueerde caches en content distributie netwerken (CDN's), komen aan bod. Afhankelijk van de bestudeerde dienst en de gebruikte netwerktechnologieën en -architectuur, worden gecentraliseerde algoritmen voor netwerkontwerp voorgesteld. Deze algoritmen optimaliseren de plaatsing van de servers of netwerkcaches en bepalen de nodige capaciteit van de servers en netwerklinks.     Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is fast emerging as the preferred information transfer technique for future Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (BISON), offering the advantages of both the simplicity of time division circuit switched techniques and the flexibility of packet switched techniques. ATM networks with their inherent rate flexibility offer new opportunities for the efficient transmission of real time Variable Bit Rate (VBR) services over such networks. Since most services are VBR in nature when efficiently coded, this could in turn lead to a more efficient utilisation of network resources through statistical multiplexing.
