This dissertation study focuses on the impact of high PV penetration on power grid electromechanical dynamics. Several major aspects of power grid electromechanical dynamics are studied under high PV penetration, including frequency response and control, inter-area oscillations, transient rotor angle stability and electromechanical wave propagation. To obtain dynamic models that can reasonably represent future power systems, Chapter One studies the co-optimization of generation and transmission with large-scale wind and solar. The stochastic nature of renewables is considered in the formulation of mixed-integer programming model. Chapter Two presents the development procedures of high PV model and investigates the impact of high PV penetration on frequency responses. Chapter Three studies the impact of PV penetration on inter-area oscillations of the U.S. Eastern Interconnection system. Chapter Four presents the impacts of high PV on other electromechanical dynamic issues, including transient rotor angle stability and electromechanical wave propagation. Chapter Five investigates the frequency response enhancement by conventional resources. Chapter Six explores system frequency response improvement through real power control of wind and PV. For improving situation awareness and frequency control, Chapter Seven studies disturbance location determination based on electromechanical wave propagation. In addition, a new method is developed to generate the electromechanical wave propagation speed map, which is useful to detect system inertia distribution change. Chapter Eight provides a review on power grid data architectures for monitoring and controlling power grids. Challenges and essential elements of data architecture are analyzed to identify various requirements for operating high-renewable power grids and a conceptual data architecture is proposed. Conclusions of this dissertation study are given in Chapter Nine

This paper contributes to a comprehensive perspective on the application of co-optimization in the energy sector – tracking the frontiers and trends in the field and identifying possible research gaps – based on a systematic literature review of 211 related studies. The use of co-optimization is addressed from a variety of perspectives by splitting the studies into ten key categories. Research has consistently shown that co-optimization approaches can be technically challenging and it is usually a data-intensive procedure. Overall, a set of techniques such as relaxation, decomposition and linear approaches have been proposed for reducing the inherent nonlinear model's complexities. The need to coordinate the necessary data from multiples actors might increase the complexity of the problem since security and confidentiality issues would also be put on the table. The evidence from our review seems to suggest a pertinent role for addressing real-case systems in future models instead of using theoretical test cases as considered by most studies. The identified challenges for future co-optimization models include (i) dealing with the treatment of uncertainties and (ii) take into account the trade-offs among modelling fidelity, spatial granularity and geographical coverage. Although there is also a growing body of literature that recognizes the importance of co-optimization focused on integrating supply and demand-side options, there has been little work in the development of co-optimization models for long-term decision-making, intending to recognize the impact of short-term variability of both demand and RES supply and well suited to systems with a high share of RES and under different demand flexibility conditions. The research results represent a further step towards the importance of developing more comprehensive approaches for integrating short-term constraints in future co-optimized planning models. The findings provide a solid evidence base for the multi-dimensionality of the co-optimization problems and contriThis work is supported by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Brazil. An Adaptive Overcurrent Coordination Scheme to Improve Relay Sensitivity and Overcome Drawbacks due to Distributed Generation in Smart Grids

Distributed Generation (DG) brought new challenges for protection engineers since standard relay settings of traditional system may no longer function properly under increasing presence of DG. The extreme case is coordination loss between primary and backup relays. The directional overcurrent relay (DOCR) which is the most implemented protective device in the electrical network also suffers performance degradation in presence of DG. Therefore, this paper proposes the mitigation of DG impact on DOCR coordination employing adaptive protection scheme (APS) using differential evolution algorithm (DE) while improving overall sensitivity of relays . The impacts of DG prior and after the application of APS are presented based on interconnected 6 bus and IEEE 14 bus system. As a consequence, general sensitivity improvement and mitigation scheme is proposed
