    Control Plane Hardware Design for Optical Packet Switched Data Centre Networks

    Optical packet switching for intra-data centre networks is key to addressing traffic requirements. Photonic integration and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) can overcome bandwidth limits in switching systems. A promising technology to build a nanosecond-reconfigurable photonic-integrated switch, compatible with WDM, is the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). SOAs are typically used as gating elements in a broadcast-and-select (B\&S) configuration, to build an optical crossbar switch. For larger-size switching, a three-stage Clos network, based on crossbar nodes, is a viable architecture. However, the design of the switch control plane, is one of the barriers to packet switching; it should run on packet timescales, which becomes increasingly challenging as line rates get higher. The scheduler, used for the allocation of switch paths, limits control clock speed. To this end, the research contribution was the design of highly parallel hardware schedulers for crossbar and Clos network switches. On a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), the minimum scheduler clock period achieved was 5.0~ns and 5.4~ns, for a 32-port crossbar and Clos switch, respectively. By using parallel path allocation modules, one per Clos node, a minimum clock period of 7.0~ns was achieved, for a 256-port switch. For scheduler application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) synthesis, this reduces to 2.0~ns; a record result enabling scalable packet switching. Furthermore, the control plane was demonstrated experimentally. Moreover, a cycle-accurate network emulator was developed to evaluate switch performance. Results showed a switch saturation throughput at a traffic load 60\% of capacity, with sub-microsecond packet latency, for a 256-port Clos switch, outperforming state-of-the-art optical packet switches

    Las redes de interconexión son un componente clave en un gran número de sistemas. Los mecanismos de calidad de servicio (qos) son responsables de asegurar que se alcanza un cierto rendimiento en la red. Las soluciones tradicionales para ofrecer qos en redes de interconexión de altas prestaciones normalmente se basan en arquitecturas complejas. El principal objetivo de esta tesis es investigar si podemos ofrecer mecanismos eficientes de qos. Nuestro propósito es alcanzar un soporte completo de qos con el mínimo de recursos. Para ello, se identifican redundancias en los mecanismos propuestos de qos y son eliminados sin afectar al rendimiento. Esta tesis consta de tres partes. En la primera comenzamos con las propuestas tradicionales de qos a nivel de clase de tráfico. En la segunda parte, proponemos como adaptar los mecanismos de qos basados en deadlines para redes de interconexión de altas prestaciones. Por último, también investigamos la interacción de los mecanismos de qos con el control de congestión

    The Design, modeling and simulation of switching fabrics: For an ATM network switch

    The requirements of today\u27s telecommunication systems to support high bandwidth and added flexibility brought about the expansion of (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) ATM as a new method of high-speed data transmission. Various analytical and simulation methods may be used to estimate the performance of ATM switches. Analytical methods considerably limit the range of parameters to be evaluated due to extensive formulae used and time consuming iterations. They are not as effective for large networks because of excessive computations that do not scale linearly with network size. One the other hand, simulation-based methods allow determining a bigger range of performance parameters in a shorter amount of time even for large networks. A simulation model, however, is more elaborate in terms of implementation. Instead of using formulae to obtain results, it has to operate software or hardware modules requiring a certain amount of effort to create. In this work simulation is accomplished by utilizing the ATM library - an object oriented software tool, which uses software chips for building ATM switches. The distinguishing feature of this approach is cut-through routing realized on the bit level abstraction treating ATM protocol data units, called cells, as groups of 424 bits. The arrival events of cells to the system are not instantaneous contrary to commonly used methods of simulation that consider cells as instant messages. The simulation was run for basic multistage interconnection network types with varying source arrival rate and buffer sizes producing a set of graphs of cell delays, throughput, cell loss probability, and queue sizes. The techniques of rearranging and sorting were considered in the simulation. The results indicate that better performance is always achieved by bringing additional stages of elements to the switching system

    Floorplan-Aware High Performance NoC Design

    Las actuales arquitecturas de m�ltiples n�cleos como los chip multiprocesadores (CMP) y soluciones multiprocesador para sistemas dentro del chip (MPSoCs) han adoptado a las redes dentro del chip (NoC) como elemento -ptimo para la inter-conexi-n de los diversos elementos de dichos sistemas. En este sentido, fabricantes de CMPs y MPSoCs han adoptado NoCs sencillas, generalmente con una topolog'a en malla o anillo, ya que son suficientes para satisfacer las necesidades de los sistemas actuales. Sin embargo a medida que los requerimientos del sistema -- baja latencia y alto rendimiento -- se hacen m�s exigentes, estas redes tan simples dejan de ser una soluci-n real. As', la comunidad investigadora ha propuesto y analizado NoCs m�s complejas. No obstante, estas soluciones son m�s dif'ciles de implementar -- especialmente los enlaces largos -- haciendo que este tipo de topolog'as complejas sean demasiado costosas o incluso inviables. En esta tesis, presentamos una metodolog'a de dise-o que minimiza la p�rdida de prestaciones de la red debido a su implementaci-n real. Los principales problemas que se encuentran al implementar una NoC son los conmutadores y los enlaces largos. En esta tesis, el conmutador se ha hecho modular, es decir, formado como uni-n de m-dulos m�s peque-os. En nuestro caso, los m-dulos son id�nticos, donde cada m-dulo es capaz de arbitrar, conmutar, y almacenar los mensajes que le llegan. Posteriormente, flexibilizamos la colocaci-n de estos m-dulos en el chip, permitiendo que m-dulos de un mismo conmutador est�n distribuidos por el chip. Esta metodolog'a de dise-o la hemos aplicado a diferentes escenarios. Primeramente, hemos introducido nuestro conmutador modular en NoCs con topolog'as conocidas como la malla 2D. Los resultados muestran como la modularidad y la distribuci-n del conmutador reducen la latencia y el consumo de potencia de la red.     Vector-thread architecture and implementation

The VT architectural paradigm unifies the vector and multithreaded compute models. VT provides the programmer with a control processor and a vector of virtual processors. The control processor can use vector-fetch commands to broadcast instructions to all the VPs or each VP can use thread-fetches to direct its own control flow. A seamless intermixing of the vector and threaded control mechanisms allows a VT architecture to flexibly and compactly encode application parallelism and locality. VT architectures can efficiently exploit a wide variety of loop-level parallelism, including non-vectorizable loops with cross-iteration dependencies or internal control flow. The Scale VT architecture is an instantiation of the vector-thread paradigm designed for low-power and high-performance embedded systems. Scale includes a scalar RISC control processor and a four-lane vector-thread unit that can execute 16 operations per cycle and supports up to 128 simultaneously active virtual processor threads. Scale provides unit-stride and strided-segment vector loads and stores, and it implements cache refill/access decoupling. The Scale memory system includes a four-port, non-blocking, 32-way set-associative, 32 KB cache. A prototype Scale VT processor was implemented in 180 nm technology using an ASIC-style design flow. The chip has 7.1 million transistors and a core area of 16.6 mm2, and it runs at 260 MHz while consuming 0.4-1.1 W. This thesis evaluates Scale using a diverse selection of embedded benchmarks, including example kernels for image processing, audio processing, text and data processing, cryptography, network processing, and wireless communication.(cont.) Larger applications also include a JPEG image encoder and an IEEE 802.11 la wireless transmitter. Scale achieves high performance on a range of different types of codes, generally executing 3-11 compute operations per cycle.
