A TABU SEARCH FOR MULTIPLE MULTI-LEVEL REDUNDANCY ALLOCATION PROBLEM IN SERIES-PARALLEL SYSTEMS

    Get PDF
The traditional RAP (Redundancy Allocation Problem) is to consider only the component redundancy at the lowest-level. A system can be functionally decomposed into system, module, and component levels. Modular redundancy can be more effective than component redundancy at the lowest-level. We consider a MMRAP (Multiple Multi-level Redundancy Allocation Problem) in which all available items for redundancy (system, module, and component) can be simultaneously chosen. A tabu search of memory-based mechanisms that balances intensification with diversification via the short-term and long-term memory is proposed for its solution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to use a TS for MMRAP. Our algorithm is compared with the previous genetic algorithm for MMRAP on the new composed test problems as well as the benchmark problems from the literature. Computational results show that the tabu search outstandingly outperforms the genetic algorithm for all test problems

On the Design of Artificial-Noise-Aided Secure Multi-Antenna Transmission in Slow Fading Channels

In this paper, we investigate the design of artificial-noise-aided secure multi-antenna transmission in slow fading channels. The primary design concerns include the transmit power allocation and the rate parameters of the wiretap code. We consider two scenarios with different complexity levels: i) the design parameters are chosen to be fixed for all transmissions, ii) they are adaptively adjusted based on the instantaneous channel feedback from the intended receiver. In both scenarios, we provide explicit design solutions for achieving the maximal throughput subject to a secrecy constraint, given by a maximum allowable secrecy outage probability. We then derive accurate approximations for the maximal throughput in both scenarios in the high signal-to-noise ratio region, and give new insights into the additional power cost for achieving a higher security level, whilst maintaining a specified target throughput. In the end, the throughput gain of adaptive transmission over non-adaptive transmission is also quantified and analyzed.Comment: to appear in IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technolog

Distributed Turbo-Like Codes for Multi-User Cooperative Relay Networks

In this paper, a distributed turbo-like coding scheme for wireless networks with relays is proposed. We consider a scenario where multiple sources communicate with a single destination with the help of a relay. The proposed scheme can be regarded as of the decode-and-forward type. The relay decodes the information from the sources and it properly combines and re-encodes them to generate some extra redundancy, which is transmitted to the destination. The amount of redundancy generated by the relay can simply be adjusted according to requirements in terms of performance, throughput and/or power. At the destination, decoding of the information of all sources is performed jointly exploiting the redundancy provided by the relay in an iterative fashion. The overall communication network can be viewed as a serially concatenated code. The proposed distributed scheme achieves significant performance gains with respect to the non-cooperation system, even for a very large number of users. Furthermore, it presents a high flexibility in terms of code rate, block length and number of users.Comment: Submitted to ICC 201

Multi-document Summarization Based on Sentence Clustering Improved Using Topic Words

Cross-layer optimization of unequal protected layered video over hierarchical modulation

    Get PDF
Abstract-unequal protection mechanisms have been proposed at several layers in order to improve the reliability of multimedia contents, especially for video data. The paper aims at implementing a multi-layer unequal protection scheme, which is based on a Physical-Transport-Application cross-layer design. Hierarchical modulation, in the physical layer, has been demonstrated to increase the overall user capacity of a wireless communications. On the other hand, unequal erasure protection codes at the transport layer turned out to be an efficient method to protect video data generated by the application layer by exploiting their intrinsic properties. In this paper, the two techniques are jointly optimized in order to enable recovering lost data in case the protection is performed separately. We show that the cross-layer design proposed herein outperforms the performance of hierarchical modulation and unequal erasure codes taken independently

Impact of Scheduling in the Return-Link of Multi-Beam Satellite MIMO Systems

    Get PDF
The utilization of universal frequency reuse in multi-beam satellite systems introduces a non-negligible level of co-channel interference (CCI), which in turn penalizes the quality of service experienced by users. Taking this as starting point, the paper focuses on resource management performed by the gateway (hub) on the return-link, with particular emphasis on a scheduling algorithm based on bipartite graph approach. The study gives important insights into the achievable per-user rate and the role played by the number of users and spot beams considered for scheduling. More interestingly, it is shown that a free-slot assignment strategy helps to exploit the available satellite resources, thus guaranteeing a max-min rate requirement to users. Remarks about the trade-off between efficiency-loss and performance increase are finally drawn at the end of the paper.Comment: Submitted and accepted to IEEE GLOBECOM 2012 Conference, 6 pages, 10 figure

Trading reliability targets within a supply chain using Shapley's value

    Get PDF
The development of complex systems involves a multi-tier supply chain, with each organisation allocated a reliability target for their sub-system or component part apportioned from system requirements. Agreements about targets are made early in the system lifecycle when considerable uncertainty exists about the design detail and potential failure modes. Hence resources required to achieve reliability are unpredictable. Some types of contracts provide incentives for organisations to negotiate targets so that system reliability requirements are met, but at minimum cost to the supply chain. This paper proposes a mechanism for deriving a fair price for trading reliability targets between suppliers using information gained about potential failure modes through development and the costs of activities required to generate such information. The approach is based upon Shapley's value and is illustrated through examples for a particular reliability growth model, and associated empirical cost model, developed for problems motivated by the aerospace industry. The paper aims to demonstrate the feasibility of the method and discuss how it could be extended to other reliability allocation models
