Math Search for the Masses: Multimodal Search Interfaces and Appearance-Based Retrieval
We summarize math search engines and search interfaces produced by the
Document and Pattern Recognition Lab in recent years, and in particular the min
math search interface and the Tangent search engine. Source code for both
systems are publicly available. "The Masses" refers to our emphasis on creating
systems for mathematical non-experts, who may be looking to define unfamiliar
notation, or browse documents based on the visual appearance of formulae rather

Negative Refractive Index in Optics of Metal-Dielectric Composites
Specially designed metal-dielectric composites can have a negative refractive
index in the optical range. Specifically, it is shown that arrays of single and
paired nanorods can provide such negative refraction. For pairs of metal rods,
a negative refractive index has been observed at 1.5 micrometer. The inverted
structure of paired voids in metal films may also exhibit a negative refractive
index. A similar effect can be accomplished with metal strips in which the
refractive index can reach -2. The refractive index retrieval procedure and the

High-resolution transport-of-intensity quantitative phase microscopy with annular illumination
For quantitative phase imaging (QPI) based on transport-of-intensity equation
(TIE), partially coherent illumination provides speckle-free imaging,
compatibility with brightfield microscopy, and transverse resolution beyond
coherent diffraction limit. Unfortunately, in a conventional microscope with
circular illumination aperture, partial coherence tends to diminish the phase
contrast, exacerbating the inherent noise-to-resolution tradeoff in TIE
imaging, resulting in strong low-frequency artifacts and compromised imaging
resolution. Here, we demonstrate how these issues can be effectively addressed
by replacing the conventional circular illumination aperture with an annular
one. The matched annular illumination not only strongly boosts the phase
contrast for low spatial frequencies, but significantly improves the practical
imaging resolution to near the incoherent diffraction limit. By incorporating
high-numerical aperture (NA) illumination as well as high-NA objective, it is
shown, for the first time, that TIE phase imaging can achieve a transverse
resolution up to 208 nm, corresponding to an effective NA of 2.66. Time-lapse
imaging of in vitro Hela cells revealing cellular morphology and subcellular
dynamics during cells mitosis and apoptosis is exemplified. Given its
capability for high-resolution QPI as well as the compatibility with widely
available brightfield microscopy hardware, the proposed approach is expected to

A system overview of the Aerospace Safety Research and Data Institute data management programs
The NASA Aerospace Safety Information System, is an interactive, generalized data base management system. The on-line retrieval aspects provide for operating from a variety of terminals (or in batch mode). NASIS retrieval enables the user to expand and display (review) the terms of index (cross reference) files, select desired index terms, combine sets of documents corresponding to selected terms and display the resulting records. It also allows the user to print (record) this information on a high speed printer if desired. NASIS also provides the ability to store the strategy of any given session the user has executed. It has a searching and publication ability through generalized linear search and report generating modules which may be performed interactively or in a batch mode. The user may specify formats for the terminal from which he is operating. The system features an interactive user's guide which explains the various commands available and how to use them as well as explanations for all system messages. This explain capability may be extended, without program changes, to include descriptions of the various files in use. Coupled with the ability of NASIS to run in an MTT (multi-terminal task) mode is its automatic accumulation of statistics on each user of the system as well as each file
Efficient XML Keyword Search based on DAG-Compression
In contrast to XML query languages as e.g. XPath which require knowledge on
the query language as well as on the document structure, keyword search is open
to anybody. As the size of XML sources grows rapidly, the need for efficient
search indices on XML data that support keyword search increases. In this
paper, we present an approach of XML keyword search which is based on the DAG
of the XML data, where repeated substructures are considered only once, and
therefore, have to be searched only once. As our performance evaluation shows,
this DAG-based extension of the set intersection search algorithm[1], [2], can
lead to search times that are on large documents more than twice as fast as the
search times of the XML-based approach. Additionally, we utilize a smaller
index, i.e., we consume less main memory to compute the results
