VECTORS: Video communication through opportunistic relays and scalable video coding
Crowd-sourced video distribution is frequently of interest in the local
vicinity. In this paper, we propose a novel design to transfer such content
over opportunistic networks with adaptive quality encoding to achieve
reasonable delay bounds. The video segments are transmitted between source and
destination in a delay tolerant manner using the Nearby Connections Android
library. This implementation can be applied to multiple domains, including farm
monitoring, wildlife, and environmental tracking, disaster response scenarios,
etc. In this work, we present the design of an opportunistic contact based

Loss-resilient Coding of Texture and Depth for Free-viewpoint Video Conferencing
Free-viewpoint video conferencing allows a participant to observe the remote
3D scene from any freely chosen viewpoint. An intermediate virtual viewpoint
image is commonly synthesized using two pairs of transmitted texture and depth
maps from two neighboring captured viewpoints via depth-image-based rendering
(DIBR). To maintain high quality of synthesized images, it is imperative to
contain the adverse effects of network packet losses that may arise during
texture and depth video transmission. Towards this end, we develop an
integrated approach that exploits the representation redundancy inherent in the
multiple streamed videos a voxel in the 3D scene visible to two captured views
is sampled and coded twice in the two views. In particular, at the receiver we
first develop an error concealment strategy that adaptively blends
corresponding pixels in the two captured views during DIBR, so that pixels from
the more reliable transmitted view are weighted more heavily. We then couple it
with a sender-side optimization of reference picture selection (RPS) during
real-time video coding, so that blocks containing samples of voxels that are
visible in both views are more error-resiliently coded in one view only, given
adaptive blending will erase errors in the other view. Further, synthesized
view distortion sensitivities to texture versus depth errors are analyzed, so
that relative importance of texture and depth code blocks can be computed for
system-wide RPS optimization. Experimental results show that the proposed
scheme can outperform the use of a traditional feedback channel by up to 0.82
dB on average at 8% packet loss rate, and by as much as 3 dB for particular
frames
ToyArchitecture: Unsupervised Learning of Interpretable Models of the World
Research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has focused mostly on two extremes:
either on small improvements in narrow AI domains, or on universal theoretical
frameworks which are usually uncomputable, incompatible with theories of
biological intelligence, or lack practical implementations. The goal of this
work is to combine the main advantages of the two: to follow a big picture
view, while providing a particular theory and its implementation. In contrast
with purely theoretical approaches, the resulting architecture should be usable
in realistic settings, but also form the core of a framework containing all the
basic mechanisms, into which it should be easier to integrate additional
required functionality.
In this paper, we present a novel, purposely simple, and interpretable
hierarchical architecture which combines multiple different mechanisms into one
system: unsupervised learning of a model of the world, learning the influence
of one's own actions on the world, model-based reinforcement learning,
hierarchical planning and plan execution, and symbolic/sub-symbolic integration
in general. The learned model is stored in the form of hierarchical
representations with the following properties: 1) they are increasingly more
abstract, but can retain details when needed, and 2) they are easy to
manipulate in their local and symbolic-like form, thus also allowing one to
observe the learning process at each level of abstraction. On all levels of the
system, the representation of the data can be interpreted in both a symbolic
and a sub-symbolic manner. This enables the architecture to learn efficiently

Distributed video coding in wireless multimedia sensor network for multimedia broadcasting
Recently the development of Distributed Video Coding (DVC) has provided the promising theory
support to realize the infrastructure of Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN), which composed of autonomous hardware for capturing and transmission of quality audio-visual content. The implementation of DVC in WMSN can better solve the problem of energy constraint of the sensor nodes due to the benefit of lower computational encoder in DVC. In this paper, a practical DVC scheme, pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv(PDWZ) video
coding, with slice structure and adaptive rate selection(ARS) is proposed to solve the certain problems when applying DVC into WMSN. Firstly, the proposed slice structure in PDWZ has extended the feasibility of PDWZ to work with any interleaver size used in Slepian-wolf turbo codec for heterogeneous applications. Meanwhile,
based on the slice structure, an adaptive code rate selection has been proposed aiming at reduce the system delay occurred in feedback request. The simulation results clearly showed the enhancement in R-D performance and perceptual quality. It also can be observed that system delay caused by frequent feedback is greatly reduced, which gives a promising support for WMSN with low latency and facilitates the QoS management
On Cooperative Multiple Access Channels with Delayed CSI at Transmitters
We consider a cooperative two-user multiaccess channel in which the
transmission is controlled by a random state. Both encoders transmit a common
message and, one of the encoders also transmits an individual message. We study
the capacity region of this communication model for different degrees of
availability of the states at the encoders, causally or strictly causally. In
the case in which the states are revealed causally to both encoders but not to
the decoder we find an explicit characterization of the capacity region in the
discrete memoryless case. In the case in which the states are revealed only
strictly causally to both encoders, we establish inner and outer bounds on the
capacity region. The outer bound is non-trivial, and has a relatively simple
form. It has the advantage of incorporating only one auxiliary random variable.
We then introduce a class of cooperative multiaccess channels with states known
strictly causally at both encoders for which the inner and outer bounds agree;
and so we characterize the capacity region for this class. In this class of
channels, the state can be obtained as a deterministic function of the channel
inputs and output. We also study the model in which the states are revealed,
strictly causally, in an asymmetric manner, to only one encoder. Throughout the
paper, we discuss a number of examples; and compute the capacity region of some
of these examples. The results shed more light on the utility of delayed
channel state information for increasing the capacity region of state-dependent
cooperative multiaccess channels; and tie with recent progress in this

Simulation and Performance Analysis of MP-OLSR for Mobile Ad hoc Networks
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) consist of a collection of wireless mobile
nodes which dynamically exchange data without reliance on a fixed base station
or a wired backbone network, which makes routing a crucial issue for the design
of a ad hoc networks. In this paper we discussed a hybrid multipath routing
protocol named MP-OLSR. It is based on the link state algorithm and employs
periodic exchange of messages to maintain topology information of the networks.
In the mean time, it updates the routing table in an on-demand scheme and
forwards the packets in multiple paths which have been determined at the
source. If a link failure is detected, the algorithm recovers the route
automatically. Concerning the instability of the wireless networks, the
redundancy coding is used to improve the delivery ratio. The simulation in NS2
shows that the new protocol can effectively improve the performance of the
networks
