Energy management in communication networks: a journey through modelling and optimization glasses
The widespread proliferation of Internet and wireless applications has
produced a significant increase of ICT energy footprint. As a response, in the
last five years, significant efforts have been undertaken to include
energy-awareness into network management. Several green networking frameworks
have been proposed by carefully managing the network routing and the power
state of network devices.
Even though approaches proposed differ based on network technologies and
sleep modes of nodes and interfaces, they all aim at tailoring the active
network resources to the varying traffic needs in order to minimize energy
consumption. From a modeling point of view, this has several commonalities with
classical network design and routing problems, even if with different
objectives and in a dynamic context.
With most researchers focused on addressing the complex and crucial
technological aspects of green networking schemes, there has been so far little
attention on understanding the modeling similarities and differences of
proposed solutions. This paper fills the gap surveying the literature with
optimization modeling glasses, following a tutorial approach that guides
through the different components of the models with a unified symbolism. A
detailed classification of the previous work based on the modeling issues
included is also proposed
Multi-Period Attack-Aware Optical Network Planning under Demand Uncertainty
In this chapter, novel attackâaware routing and wavelength assignment (AaâRWA) algorithms for multiperiod network planning are proposed. The considered physical layer attacks addressed in this chapter are highâpower jamming attacks. These attacks are modeled as interactions among lightpaths as a result of intraâchannel and/or interâchannel crosstalk. The proposed AaâRWA algorithm first solves the problem for given traffic demands, and subsequently, the algorithm is enhanced in order to deal with demands under uncertainties. The demand uncertainty is considered in order to provide a solution for several periods, where the knowledge of demands for future periods can only be estimated. The objective of the AaâRWA algorithm is to minimize the impact of possible physical layer attacks and at the same time minimize the investment cost (in terms of switching equipment deployed) during the network planning phase
The Incremental Cooperative Design of Preventive Healthcare Networks

The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10479-017-2569-1.In the Preventive Healthcare Network Design Problem (PHNDP), one seeks to locate facilities in a way that the uptake of services is maximised given certain constraints such as congestion considerations. We introduce the incremental and cooperative version of the problem, IC-PHNDP for short, in which facilities are added incrementally to the network (one at a time), contributing to the service levels. We first develop a general non-linear model of this problem and then present a method to make it linear. As the problem is of a combinatorial nature, an efficient Variable Neighbourhood Search (VNS) algorithm is proposed to solve it. In order to gain insight into the problem, the computational studies were performed with randomly generated instances of different settings. Results clearly show that VNS performs well in solving IC-PHNDP with errors not more than 1.54%.Peer reviewe
On the use of biased-randomized algorithms for solving non-smooth optimization problems
Soft constraints are quite common in real-life applications. For example, in freight transportation, the fleet size can be enlarged by outsourcing part of the distribution service and some deliveries to customers can be postponed as well; in inventory management, it is possible to consider stock-outs generated by unexpected demands; and in manufacturing processes and project management, it is frequent that some deadlines cannot be met due to delays in critical steps of the supply chain. However, capacity-, size-, and time-related limitations are included in many optimization problems as hard constraints, while it would be usually more realistic to consider them as soft ones, i.e., they can be violated to some extent by incurring a penalty cost. Most of the times, this penalty cost will be nonlinear and even noncontinuous, which might transform the objective function into a non-smooth one. Despite its many practical applications, non-smooth optimization problems are quite challenging, especially when the underlying optimization problem is NP-hard in nature. In this paper, we propose the use of biased-randomized algorithms as an effective methodology to cope with NP-hard and non-smooth optimization problems in many practical applications. Biased-randomized algorithms extend constructive heuristics by introducing a nonuniform randomization pattern into them. Hence, they can be used to explore promising areas of the solution space without the limitations of gradient-based approaches, which assume the existence of smooth objective functions. Moreover, biased-randomized algorithms can be easily parallelized, thus employing short computing times while exploring a large number of promising regions. This paper discusses these concepts in detail, reviews existing work in different application areas, and highlights current trends and open research lines
A fast ILP-based Heuristic for the robust design of Body Wireless Sensor Networks
We consider the problem of optimally designing a body wireless sensor
network, while taking into account the uncertainty of data generation of
biosensors. Since the related min-max robustness Integer Linear Programming
(ILP) problem can be difficult to solve even for state-of-the-art commercial
optimization solvers, we propose an original heuristic for its solution. The
heuristic combines deterministic and probabilistic variable fixing strategies,
guided by the information coming from strengthened linear relaxations of the
ILP robust model, and includes a very large neighborhood search for reparation
and improvement of generated solutions, formulated as an ILP problem solved
exactly. Computational tests on realistic instances show that our heuristic
finds solutions of much higher quality than a state-of-the-art solver and than

Urban Rapid Transit Network Capacity Expansion
This paper examines a multi-period capacity expansion problem for rapid transit network design. The capacity expansion is realized through the location of train alignments and stations in an urban traffic context by selecting the time periods. The model maximizes the public transportation demand using a limited budget and designing lines for each period. The location problem incorporates the user decisions about mode and route. The network capacity expansion is a long-term planning problem because the network is built over several periods, in which the data (demand, resource price, etc.) are changing like the real problem changes. This complex problem cannot be solved by branch and bound, and for this reason, a heuristic approach has been defined in order to solve it. Both methods have been experimented in test networks
On the Unique Features and Benefits of On-Demand Distribution Models
To close the gap between current distribution operations and todayâs customer expectations, firms need to think differently about how resources are acquired, managed and allocated to fulfill customer requests. Rather than optimize planned resource capacity acquired through ownership or long- term partnerships, this work focuses on a specific supply-side innovation â on-demand distribution platforms. On-demand distribution systems move, store, and fulfill goods by matching autonomous suppliers\u27 resources (warehouse space, fulfillment capacity, truck space, delivery services) to requests on-demand. On-demand warehousing systems can provide resource elasticity by allowing capacity decisions to be made at a finer granularity (at the pallet-level) and commitment (monthly versus yearly), than construct or lease options. However, such systems are inherently more complex than traditional systems, as well as have varying costs and operational structures (e.g., higher variable costs, but little or no fixed costs). New decision- supporting models are needed to capture these trade-offs
Multiperiod Dispatching and Routing for On-Time Delivery in a Dynamic and Stochastic Environment
On-demand delivery has become increasingly popular around the world.
Brick-and-mortar grocery stores, restaurants, and pharmacies are providing fast
delivery services to satisfy the growing home delivery demand. Motivated by a
large meal and grocery delivery company, we model and solve a multiperiod
driver dispatching and routing problem for last-mile delivery systems where
on-time performance is the main target. The operator of this system needs to
dispatch a set of drivers and specify their delivery routes in a stochastic
environment, in which random demand arrives over a fixed number of periods. The
resulting dynamic program is challenging to solve due to the curse of
dimensionality. We propose a novel approximation framework to approximate the
value function via a simplified dispatching program. We then develop efficient
exact algorithms for this problem based on Benders decomposition and column
generation. We validate the superior performance of our framework and
algorithms via extensive numerical experiments. Tested on a real-world data
set, we quantify the value of adaptive dispatching and routing in on-time
delivery and highlight the need of coordinating these two decisions in a
dynamic setting. We show that dispatching multiple vehicles with short trips is
preferable for on-time delivery, as opposed to sending a few vehicles with long
travel times
