    Bibliography: pages 116-121.The possibility of providing wireless access to an ATM network promises nomadic users a communication tool of unparalleled power and flexibility. Unfortunately, the physical realization of a wireless A TM system is fraught with technical difficulties, not the least of which is the problem of supporting a traditional ATM protocol over a non-benign wireless link. The objective of this thesis, titled "The Application of Forward Error Correction Techniques in Wireless ATM' is to examine the feasibility of using forward error correction techniques to improve the perceived channel characteristics to the extent that the channel becomes transparent to the higher layers and allows the use of an unmodified A TM protocol over the channel. In the course of the investigation that this dissertation describes, three possible error control strategies were suggested for implementation in a generic wireless channel. These schemes used a combination of forward error correction coding schemes, automatic repeat request schemes and interleavers to combat the impact of bit errors on the performance of the link. The following error control strategies were considered : 1. A stand alone fixed rate Reed-Solomon encoder/decoder with automatic repeat request. 2. A concatenated Reed-Solomon, convolution encoder/decoder with automatic request and convolution interleaving for the convolution codec. 3. A dynamic rate encoder/decoder using either a concatenated Reed-Solomon, convolution scheme or a Reed-Solomon only scheme with variable length Reed-Solomon words

    Performance evaluation of a 40 GHz broadband cellular system

    Doutoramento em Engenharia ElectrónicaO trabalho apresentado nesta tese enquadra-se na área das comunicações móveis celulares e tem subjacente a utilização de um protótipo de um sistema de comunicações móveis de banda larga desenvolvido no âmbito do projecto Europeu SAMBA. Este protótipo apresenta como principais características inovadoras as taxas de transmissão, a frequência de operação, a mobilidade e os protocolos de handover rádio. Inicialmente são descritos aspectos relacionados com a evolução das comunicações móveis ao longo do tempo e apresentados conceitos teóricos fundamentais para compreender o comportamento do canal rádio móvel e os mecanismos de propagação. São identificados os tipos de desvanecimento e descritos os vários parâmetros que permitem caracterizar o canal rádio. A descrição do impacto do desvanecimento e as formas de o mitigar são apresentadas para contextualizar o trabalho desenvolvido em termos da especificação do protótipo e as opções escolhidas. As características globais do protótipo são apresentadas o que inclui a descrição do interface rádio, da arquitectura, dos módulos de RF, dos módulos de processamento de banda base, protocolos e algoritmo de transferência rádio. O protótipo foi avaliado em vários cenários com diferentes características. No cenário exterior foi analisada uma rua urbana típica do tipo canyon. Em termos de configuração do sistema foram consideradas e analisadas várias alturas da Estação Base, anglos de inclinação das antenas, várias velocidades da Terminal Móvel, operação com e sem linha de vista e a penetração do sinal rádio em ruas transversais. No cenário interior foram realizados testes similares e medidas relativas às transferências que só foram executadas para este cenário por questões logísticas. Numa primeira abordagem foi analisada a cobertura oferecida por cada célula e posteriormente activada a funcionalidade de transferência. Foram também efectuados estudos com uma única Estação Base cobrindo toda a área. Em termos de caracterização do canal rádio em banda larga são apresentadas medidas da resposta impulsiva para dois cenários interiores e complementados por outros estudos via simulação utilizando uma ferramenta de ray tracing. Nas medidas foi utilizado um método de medição do canal no domínio da frequência. A relação entre o Espalhamento do Atraso e a Banda de Coerência em diferentes cenários foi analisada em detalhe e feita a verificação em termos da violação do limite teórico de Fleury. Como consequência dos tópicos abordados, esta tese apresenta um estudo abrangente de aspectos relacionados com o comportamento do canal rádio na faixa dos 40 GHz e a análise das opções técnicas do protótipo em termos do seu desempenho no âmbito dos sistemas de comunicações móveis 4G.The work presented in this thesis addresses the area of mobile cellular broadband communications and encompasses the utilization of a prototype developed in the framework of the European project SAMBA. This prototype has as main innovative characteristics the transmission rates, the frequency band of operation, the mobility and the radio handover protocols. Initially are described aspects related with the historical evolution of the mobile communications and presented fundamental theoretical concepts to understand the behaviour of the radio channel and the propagation mechanisms. The different types of fading are identified as well as the various parameters that allow the characterisation of the radio channel. The fading impact and its mitigation techniques are presented to contextualise the work developed in terms of the specification of the features implemented in the prototype and the options available. The global characteristic of the prototype are presented namely the radio interface, the architecture, the RF modules, the baseband modules, protocols and the algorithm for the radio handover. The prototype was evaluated in various scenarios with different characteristics. In the outdoor scenario a canyon type street was analysed. Several heights of the Base Station, antenna tilting angles, Mobile Terminal velocities, operation in line-of-sight and non line-of-sight and the penetration of the signal in a transversal street. In the indoor scenario similar measurements were performed. The handover feature was analysed just for this scenario due to logistic reasons. In a first phase the coverage provided by each Base Station was analysed and subsequently activated the handover functionality. Studies using a single Base Station to cover the whole pavilion were also performed. In terms of broadband analysis, channel impulse response measurements were performed using a frequency domain technique in two scenarios and complemented by others analysed only using a ray tracing simulation tool. The relationship between the radio channel Delay Spread and the Coherence Bandwidth was analysed in different scenarios and the possible violation of the Fleury lower bond checked. As a consequence of the several topics covered in this thesis, a deep study of the aspects related with the behaviour of the radio channel in the 40 GHz band and the performance of the technical options implemented in the prototype is presented in the framework of 4G mobile communication systems

    Optimization and Performance Analysis of High Speed Mobile Access Networks

    The end-to-end performance evaluation of high speed broadband mobile access networks is the main focus of this work. Novel transport network adaptive flow control and enhanced congestion control algorithms are proposed, implemented, tested and validated using a comprehensive High speed packet Access (HSPA) system simulator. The simulation analysis confirms that the aforementioned algorithms are able to provide reliable and guaranteed services for both network operators and end users cost-effectively. Further, two novel analytical models one for congestion control and the other for the combined flow control and congestion control which are based on Markov chains are designed and developed to perform the aforementioned analysis efficiently compared to time consuming detailed system simulations. In addition, the effects of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) transport network (S1and X2 interfaces) on the end user performance are investigated and analysed by introducing a novel comprehensive MAC scheduling scheme and a novel transport service differentiation model

    Interoperability of wireless communication technologies in hybrid networks : evaluation of end-to-end interoperability issues and quality of service requirements

    Hybrid Networks employing wireless communication technologies have nowadays brought closer the vision of communication “anywhere, any time with anyone”. Such communication technologies consist of various standards, protocols, architectures, characteristics, models, devices, modulation and coding techniques. All these different technologies naturally may share some common characteristics, but there are also many important differences. New advances in these technologies are emerging very rapidly, with the advent of new models, characteristics, protocols and architectures. This rapid evolution imposes many challenges and issues to be addressed, and of particular importance are the interoperability issues of the following wireless technologies: Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) IEEE802.11, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) IEEE 802.16, Single Channel per Carrier (SCPC), Digital Video Broadcasting of Satellite (DVB-S/DVB-S2), and Digital Video Broadcasting Return Channel through Satellite (DVB-RCS). Due to the differences amongst wireless technologies, these technologies do not generally interoperate easily with each other because of various interoperability and Quality of Service (QoS) issues. The aim of this study is to assess and investigate end-to-end interoperability issues and QoS requirements, such as bandwidth, delays, jitter, latency, packet loss, throughput, TCP performance, UDP performance, unicast and multicast services and availability, on hybrid wireless communication networks (employing both satellite broadband and terrestrial wireless technologies). The thesis provides an introduction to wireless communication technologies followed by a review of previous research studies on Hybrid Networks (both satellite and terrestrial wireless technologies, particularly Wi-Fi, WiMAX, DVB-RCS, and SCPC). Previous studies have discussed Wi-Fi, WiMAX, DVB-RCS, SCPC and 3G technologies and their standards as well as their properties and characteristics, such as operating frequency, bandwidth, data rate, basic configuration, coverage, power, interference, social issues, security problems, physical and MAC layer design and development issues. Although some previous studies provide valuable contributions to this area of research, they are limited to link layer characteristics, TCP performance, delay, bandwidth, capacity, data rate, and throughput. None of the studies cover all aspects of end-to-end interoperability issues and QoS requirements; such as bandwidth, delay, jitter, latency, packet loss, link performance, TCP and UDP performance, unicast and multicast performance, at end-to-end level, on Hybrid wireless networks. Interoperability issues are discussed in detail and a comparison of the different technologies and protocols was done using appropriate testing tools, assessing various performance measures including: bandwidth, delay, jitter, latency, packet loss, throughput and availability testing. The standards, protocol suite/ models and architectures for Wi-Fi, WiMAX, DVB-RCS, SCPC, alongside with different platforms and applications, are discussed and compared. Using a robust approach, which includes a new testing methodology and a generic test plan, the testing was conducted using various realistic test scenarios on real networks, comprising variable numbers and types of nodes. The data, traces, packets, and files were captured from various live scenarios and sites. The test results were analysed in order to measure and compare the characteristics of wireless technologies, devices, protocols and applications. The motivation of this research is to study all the end-to-end interoperability issues and Quality of Service requirements for rapidly growing Hybrid Networks in a comprehensive and systematic way. The significance of this research is that it is based on a comprehensive and systematic investigation of issues and facts, instead of hypothetical ideas/scenarios or simulations, which informed the design of a test methodology for empirical data gathering by real network testing, suitable for the measurement of hybrid network single-link or end-to-end issues using proven test tools. This systematic investigation of the issues encompasses an extensive series of tests measuring delay, jitter, packet loss, bandwidth, throughput, availability, performance of audio and video session, multicast and unicast performance, and stress testing. This testing covers most common test scenarios in hybrid networks and gives recommendations in achieving good end-to-end interoperability and QoS in hybrid networks. Contributions of study include the identification of gaps in the research, a description of interoperability issues, a comparison of most common test tools, the development of a generic test plan, a new testing process and methodology, analysis and network design recommendations for end-to-end interoperability issues and QoS requirements. This covers the complete cycle of this research. It is found that UDP is more suitable for hybrid wireless network as compared to TCP, particularly for the demanding applications considered, since TCP presents significant problems for multimedia and live traffic which requires strict QoS requirements on delay, jitter, packet loss and bandwidth. The main bottleneck for satellite communication is the delay of approximately 600 to 680 ms due to the long distance factor (and the finite speed of light) when communicating over geostationary satellites. The delay and packet loss can be controlled using various methods, such as traffic classification, traffic prioritization, congestion control, buffer management, using delay compensator, protocol compensator, developing automatic request technique, flow scheduling, and bandwidth allocation.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    Las comunicaciones móviles es, claramente, uno de los campos de las telecomunicaciones donde estamos viviendo, día a día, un mayor desarrollo y cambio. El Área de Teoría de la Señal y Comunicaciones de la Universidad Miguel Hernández no se puede mostrar insensible a tales acontecimientos, y prueba de ello es la presente publicación. Con ella se pretende ofrecer al lector una completa visión de diferentes aspectos, como puede comprobar consultando el índice de la misma. Pretende ser un buen complemento a las explicaciones de clase de la asignatura “Tecnología de las comunicaciones móviles”, para la que está especialmente ideado. Se ha tratado de completar el libro “Introducción a las comunicaciones móviles” con las tecnologías de las comunicaciones móviles optimizadas para datos, y por tanto, orientadas a conmutación de paquetes. En el primer capítulo se da una breve introducción a WAP, pasando, después, en el capítulo 2 a describir más en profundidad GPRS o generación 2,5 de la telefonía móvil en Europa. El capítulo 3, nos introduce en la técnica de acceso múltiple por división de código, CDMA, para facilitarnos la mejor comprensión de los capítulos siguientes. En UMTS o tercera generación, (capítulo 4) nos paramos con más detalle, por ser la tecnología que se pretende revolucione el futuro. Por último, los capítulos 5 y 6 dan una iniciación a otras tecnologías, que aunque con cierta incertidumbre, interactuarán con las redes móviles en el entorno privado, como son las redes inalámbricas, WLAN, y Bluetooth
