    Multivariate Bayesian Machine Learning Regression for Operation and Management of Multiple Reservoir, Irrigation Canal, and River Systems

    The principal objective of this dissertation is to develop Bayesian machine learning models for multiple reservoir, irrigation canal, and river system operation and management. These types of models are derived from the emerging area of machine learning theory; they are characterized by their ability to capture the underlying physics of the system simply by examination of the measured system inputs and outputs. They can be used to provide probabilistic predictions of system behavior using only historical data. The models were developed in the form of a multivariate relevance vector machine (MVRVM) that is based on a sparse Bayesian learning machine approach for regression. Using this Bayesian approach, a predictive confidence interval is obtained from the model that captures the uncertainty of both the model and the data. The models were applied to the multiple reservoir, canal and river system located in the regulated Lower Sevier River Basin in Utah. The models were developed to perform predictions of multi-time-ahead releases of multiple reservoirs, diversions of multiple canals, and streamflow and water loss/gain in a river system. This research represents the first attempt to use a multivariate Bayesian learning regression approach to develop simultaneous multi-step-ahead predictions with predictive confidence intervals for multiple outputs in a regulated river basin system. These predictions will be of potential value to reservoir and canal operators in identifying the best decisions for operation and management of irrigation water supply systems

    Multi objective optimization in charge management of micro grid based multistory carpark

    Distributed power supply with the use of renewable energy sources and intelligent energy flow management has undoubtedly become one of the pressing trends in modern power engineering, which also inspired researchers from other fields to contribute to the topic. There are several kinds of micro grid platforms, each facing its own challenges and thus making the problem purely multi objective. In this paper, an evolutionary driven algorithm is applied and evaluated on a real platform represented by a private multistory carpark equipped with photovoltaic solar panels and several battery packs. The algorithm works as a core of an adaptive charge management system based on predicted conditions represented by estimated electric load and production in the future hours. The outcome of the paper is a comparison of the optimized and unoptimized charge management on three different battery setups proving that optimization may often outperform a battery setup with larger capacity in several criteria.Web of Science117art. no. 179

    During the last few years, information technology and transportation industries, along with automotive manufacturers and academia, are focusing on leveraging intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to improve services related to driver experience, connected cars, Internet data plans for vehicles, traffic infrastructure, urban transportation systems, traffic collaborative management, road traffic accidents analysis, road traffic flow prediction, public transportation service plan, personal travel route plans, and the development of an effective ecosystem for vehicles, drivers, traffic controllers, city planners, and transportation applications. Moreover, the emerging technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing have provided unprecedented opportunities for the development and realization of innovative intelligent transportation systems where sensors and mobile devices can gather information and cloud computing, allowing knowledge discovery, information sharing, and supported decision making. However, the development of such data-driven ITS requires the integration, processing, and analysis of plentiful information obtained from millions of vehicles, traffic infrastructures, smartphones, and other collaborative systems like weather stations and road safety and early warning systems. The huge amount of data generated by ITS devices is only of value if utilized in data analytics for decision-making such as accident prevention and detection, controlling road risks, reducing traffic carbon emissions, and other applications which bring big data analytics into the picture

    Environmental Sensor Anomaly Detection Using Learning Machines

    The problem of quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) for real-time measurements of environmental and water quality variables has been a field explored by many in recent years. The use of in situ sensors has become a common practice for acquiring real-time measurements that provide the basis for important natural resources management decisions. However, these sensors are susceptible to failure due to such things as human factors, lack of necessary maintenance, flaws on the transmission line or any part of the sensor, and unexpected changes in the sensors\u27 surrounding conditions. Two types of machine learning techniques were used in this study to assess the detection of anomalous data points on turbidity readings from the Paradise site on the Little Bear River, in northern Utah: Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Relevance Vector Machines (RVMs). ANN and RVM techniques were used to develop regression models capable of predicting upcoming Paradise site turbidity measurements and estimating confidence intervals associated with those predictions, to be later used to determine if a real measurement is an anomaly. Three cases were identified as important to evaluate as possible inputs for the regression models created: (1) only the reported values from the sensor from previous time steps, (2) reported values from the sensor from previous time steps and values of other water types of sensors from the same site as the target sensor, and (3) adding as inputs the previous readings from sensors from upstream sites. The decision of which of the models performed the best was made based on each model\u27s ability to detect anomalous data points that were identified in a QA/QC analysis that was manually performed by a human technician. False positive and false negative rates for a range of confidence intervals were used as the measure of performance of the models. The RVM models were able to detect more anomalous points within narrower confidence intervals than the ANN models. At the same time, it was shown that incorporating as inputs measurements from other sensors at the same site as well as measurements from upstream sites can improve the performance of the models

    Machine Learning Research Trends in Africa: A 30 Years Overview with Bibliometric Analysis Review

    In this paper, a critical bibliometric analysis study is conducted, coupled with an extensive literature survey on recent developments and associated applications in machine learning research with a perspective on Africa. The presented bibliometric analysis study consists of 2761 machine learning-related documents, of which 98% were articles with at least 482 citations published in 903 journals during the past 30 years. Furthermore, the collated documents were retrieved from the Science Citation Index EXPANDED, comprising research publications from 54 African countries between 1993 and 2021. The bibliometric study shows the visualization of the current landscape and future trends in machine learning research and its application to facilitate future collaborative research and knowledge exchange among authors from different research institutions scattered across the African continent
