Switched Reluctance Motor has numerous advantages compared to another electric motor. Simple structure, low-cost production, robustness, and high fault tolerance have been remarkable milestones. Still, the problem of excitation angle at power converter becomes crucial, especially for traction use, requiring higher torque at low speed for starting and acceleration. Therefore, this research emphasized finding the optimum excitation angle at low speed using Response Surface Methodology, a practical application to achieve the highest torque, as indicated by the best speed in the constant torque region. As a result, using Matlab simulation, the adaptive combination of optimum angles reached 2691 rpm quicker than a single excitation angle with 2568 rpm, an increase of 4.79% higher speed using RSM optimization. According to the experimental data, the adaptive combination of optimum angle achieved 2475 rpm better than the single excitation angle reached 2340 rpm, an increase of 5.77% higher speed using the Response Surface Methodology

Multi-objective optimization of switched reluctance machine design using Jaya algorithm (MO-Jaya)

The switched reluctance machine (SRM) design is different from the design of most of other machines. SRM has many design parameters that have non-linear relationships with the performance indices (i.e., average torque, efficiency, and so forth). Hence, it is difficult to design SRM using straight forward equations with iterative methods, which is common for other machines. Optimization techniques are used to overcome this challenge by searching for the best variables values within the search area. In this paper, the optimization of SRM design is achieved using multi-objective Jaya algorithm (MO-Jaya). In the Jaya algorithm, solutions are moved closer to the best solution and away from the worst solution. Hence, a good intensification of the search process is achieved. Moreover, the randomly changed parameters achieve good search diversity. In this paper, it is suggested to also randomly change best and worst solutions. Hence, better diversity is achieved, as indicated from results. The optimization with the MO-Jaya algorithm was made for 8/6 and 6/4 SRM. Objectives used are the average torque, efficiency, and iron weight. The results of MO-Jaya are compared with the results of the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) for the same conditions and constraints. The optimization program is made in Lua programming language and executed by FEMM4.2 software. The results show the success of the approach to achieve better objective values, a broad search, and to introduce a variety of optimal solutions

Design optimization of a short-term duty electrical machine for extreme environment

This paper presents design optimisation of a short term duty electrical machine for extreme environments of high temperature and high altitudes. For such extreme environmental conditions of above 80⁰C and altitudes of 30km, thermal loading limits are a critical consideration in machines, especially if high power density and high efficiency are to be achieved. The influence of different material on the performance of such machines is investigated. Also the effect of different slot and pole combinations are studied for machines used for such extreme operating conditions but with short duty. In the research, A Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGAII) considering an analytical electromagnetic model, structural and thermal model together with Finite Element (FE) methods are used to optimise the design of the machine for such environments achieving high efficiencies and high power density with relatively minimal computational time. The adopted thermal model is then validated through experiments and then implemented within the Genetic Algorithm (GA). It is shown that, generally, the designs are thermally limited where the pole numbers are limited by volt-amps drawn from the converter. The design consisting of a high slot number allows for improving the current loading and thus, significant weight reduction can be achieved

The optimal design of the electric motor and of the inverter that powers it needs to consider a long list of restrictions and criteria. Because of the fact that the geometry of the motor and the switching strategy are closely linked, the optimization of the traction solution needs to consider both, at the same time. The objective of this thesis is the development of an optimization tool applied for the optimization of an electric traction solution that uses the switched reluctance motor (SRM) fed from a three phase full bridge inverter. The SRM is modeled using Permeance Network Analysis (PNA). The switching technique can be easily integrated in the model, which gives the possibility to run a dynamic analysis. The optimization tool created uses the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, modified for multi-objective problems. The algorithms performances are compared with those of the Genetic Algorithm, using the NSGA-II multi-objective technique and with a classic version of multiple objective particle swarm optimizer (MOPSO).Finally, a SRM prototype is constructed and the drive solution using a full-bridge three phase inverter is implemented. The modeling and optimization tools are thus experimentally validatedVILLENEUVE D'ASCQ-ECLI (590092307) / SudocSudocFranceF

The electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle play a fundamental role in the forthcoming new paradigms of mobility and energy models. The electrification of the transport sector would lead to advantages in terms of energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, but would also be a great opportunity for the introduction of renewable sources in the electricity sector. The chapters in this book show a diversity of current and new developments in the electrification of the transport sector seen from the electric vehicle point of view: first, the related technologies with design, control and supervision, second, the powertrain electric motor efficiency and reliability and, third, the deployment issues regarding renewable sources integration and charging facilities. This is precisely the purpose of this book, that is, to contribute to the literature about current research and development activities related to new trends in electric vehicle power trains.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Design optimisation of brushless permanent magnet synchronous motor for electric vehicles

A novel new application of optimisation algorithm “Bess Algorithm” in the design of electric machine is presented in this thesis. The optimisation has the ability to perform global and local search and can be applied on constrained, unconstrained optimisation problem with multi-objective function, which all counted when consider optimisation algorithm for the design of electric machine. The searching procedure of the optimisation algorithm has been described in detailed. Furthermore, novel instructions and recommendation were implemented to tune the optimisation parameters, particularly for the purpose electric machine design, which in turn reduced the search space, increase efficiency and ability to find optimal solution with lower computation time. The optimisation was applied to search for optimal parameters of a benchmark electric machine with multi-objective to reduce the cost and increase the power density, power-volume ratio and efficiency. Throughout the thesis, a full detailed analytical model for the design of brushless permanent magnet synchronous motor that account for electromagnetic and thermal aspects was described. The optimisation was employed to search for optimal parameters of the analytical model that satisfy the design requirements. Then, the generated optimal parameters were evaluated and verified by Finite Element Analysis, FEA. The results from the FEA show good agreement with their corresponding values in the analytical model within acceptable range. At the same operational conditions and output specifications, the results show that the power density, volume to power ratio and cost of the new optimised motor IV were all increased by 19%, 39%, 24% respectively and the efficiency reduced only by -1%. The optimisation was also compared with one of the most usable optimisation algorithm used in the design of electric machine i.e. Genetic Algorithm. The results show that bees algorithm has more ability to cover the search space with less number of recruited bees and less number of iterations and higher computation efficiency
