Clausal Resolution for Modal Logics of Confluence
We present a clausal resolution-based method for normal multimodal logics of
confluence, whose Kripke semantics are based on frames characterised by
appropriate instances of the Church-Rosser property. Here we restrict attention
to eight families of such logics. We show how the inference rules related to
the normal logics of confluence can be systematically obtained from the
parametrised axioms that characterise such systems. We discuss soundness,
completeness, and termination of the method. In particular, completeness can be
modularly proved by showing that the conclusions of each newly added inference
rule ensures that the corresponding conditions on frames hold. Some examples

The Grail theorem prover: Type theory for syntax and semantics
As the name suggests, type-logical grammars are a grammar formalism based on
logic and type theory. From the prespective of grammar design, type-logical
grammars develop the syntactic and semantic aspects of linguistic phenomena
hand-in-hand, letting the desired semantics of an expression inform the
syntactic type and vice versa. Prototypical examples of the successful
application of type-logical grammars to the syntax-semantics interface include
coordination, quantifier scope and extraction.This chapter describes the Grail
theorem prover, a series of tools for designing and testing grammars in various
modern type-logical grammars which functions as a tool . All tools described in

Harnessing Higher-Order (Meta-)Logic to Represent and Reason with Complex Ethical Theories
The computer-mechanization of an ambitious explicit ethical theory, Gewirth's
Principle of Generic Consistency, is used to showcase an approach for
representing and reasoning with ethical theories exhibiting complex logical
features like alethic and deontic modalities, indexicals, higher-order
quantification, among others. Harnessing the high expressive power of Church's
type theory as a meta-logic to semantically embed a combination of quantified
non-classical logics, our work pushes existing boundaries in knowledge
representation and reasoning. We demonstrate that intuitive encodings of
complex ethical theories and their automation on the computer are no longer

Multimodality in Pervasive Environment
Future pervasive environments are expected to immerse users in a consistent
world of probes, sensors and actuators. Multimodal interfaces combined
with social computing interactions and high-performance networking can foster a
new generation of pervasive environments. However, much work is still needed to
harness the full potential of multimodal interaction. In this paper we discuss some
short-term research goals, including advanced techniques for joining and correlating
multiple data flows, each with its own approximations and uncertainty models.
Also, we discuss some longer term objectives, like providing users with a mental
model of their own multimodal "aura", enabling them to collaborate with the network
infrastructure toward inter-modal correlation of multimodal inputs, much in
the same way as the human brain extracts a single self-conscious experience from
multiple sensorial data flows
Action Selection for Interaction Management: Opportunities and Lessons for Automated Planning
The central problem in automated planning---action selection---is also a
primary topic in the dialogue systems research community, however, the
nature of research in that community is significantly different from that
of planning, with a focus on end-to-end systems and user evaluations. In
particular, numerous toolkits are available for developing speech-based
dialogue systems that include not only a method for representing states and
actions, but also a mechanism for reasoning and selecting the actions,
often combined with a technical framework designed to simplify the task of
creating end-to-end systems. We contrast this situation with that of
automated planning, and argue that the dialogue systems community could
benefit from some of the directions adopted by the planning community, and
that there also exist opportunities and lessons for automated planning
