VIGAN: Missing View Imputation with Generative Adversarial Networks
In an era when big data are becoming the norm, there is less concern with the
quantity but more with the quality and completeness of the data. In many
disciplines, data are collected from heterogeneous sources, resulting in
multi-view or multi-modal datasets. The missing data problem has been
challenging to address in multi-view data analysis. Especially, when certain
samples miss an entire view of data, it creates the missing view problem.
Classic multiple imputations or matrix completion methods are hardly effective
here when no information can be based on in the specific view to impute data
for such samples. The commonly-used simple method of removing samples with a
missing view can dramatically reduce sample size, thus diminishing the
statistical power of a subsequent analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel
approach for view imputation via generative adversarial networks (GANs), which
we name by VIGAN. This approach first treats each view as a separate domain and
identifies domain-to-domain mappings via a GAN using randomly-sampled data from
each view, and then employs a multi-modal denoising autoencoder (DAE) to
reconstruct the missing view from the GAN outputs based on paired data across
the views. Then, by optimizing the GAN and DAE jointly, our model enables the
knowledge integration for domain mappings and view correspondences to
effectively recover the missing view. Empirical results on benchmark datasets
validate the VIGAN approach by comparing against the state of the art. The
evaluation of VIGAN in a genetic study of substance use disorders further

Learning Human Motion Models for Long-term Predictions
We propose a new architecture for the learning of predictive spatio-temporal
motion models from data alone. Our approach, dubbed the Dropout Autoencoder
LSTM, is capable of synthesizing natural looking motion sequences over long
time horizons without catastrophic drift or motion degradation. The model
consists of two components, a 3-layer recurrent neural network to model
temporal aspects and a novel auto-encoder that is trained to implicitly recover
the spatial structure of the human skeleton via randomly removing information
about joints during training time. This Dropout Autoencoder (D-AE) is then used
to filter each predicted pose of the LSTM, reducing accumulation of error and
hence drift over time. Furthermore, we propose new evaluation protocols to
assess the quality of synthetic motion sequences even for which no ground truth
data exists. The proposed protocols can be used to assess generated sequences
of arbitrary length. Finally, we evaluate our proposed method on two of the
largest motion-capture datasets available to date and show that our model
outperforms the state-of-the-art on a variety of actions, including cyclic and
acyclic motion, and that it can produce natural looking sequences over longer
time horizons than previous methods
Recovering Faces from Portraits with Auxiliary Facial Attributes
Recovering a photorealistic face from an artistic portrait is a challenging
task since crucial facial details are often distorted or completely lost in
artistic compositions. To handle this loss, we propose an Attribute-guided Face
Recovery from Portraits (AFRP) that utilizes a Face Recovery Network (FRN) and
a Discriminative Network (DN). FRN consists of an autoencoder with residual
block-embedded skip-connections and incorporates facial attribute vectors into
the feature maps of input portraits at the bottleneck of the autoencoder. DN
has multiple convolutional and fully-connected layers, and its role is to
enforce FRN to generate authentic face images with corresponding facial
attributes dictated by the input attribute vectors. %Leveraging on the spatial
transformer networks, FRN automatically compensates for misalignments of
portraits. % and generates aligned face images. For the preservation of
identities, we impose the recovered and ground-truth faces to share similar
visual features. Specifically, DN determines whether the recovered image looks
like a real face and checks if the facial attributes extracted from the
recovered image are consistent with given attributes. %Our method can recover
high-quality photorealistic faces from unaligned portraits while preserving the
identity of the face images as well as it can reconstruct a photorealistic face
image with a desired set of attributes. Our method can recover photorealistic
identity-preserving faces with desired attributes from unseen stylized
portraits, artistic paintings, and hand-drawn sketches. On large-scale
synthesized and sketch datasets, we demonstrate that our face recovery method

Prediction of Human Trajectory Following a Haptic Robotic Guide Using Recurrent Neural Networks
Social intelligence is an important requirement for enabling robots to
collaborate with people. In particular, human path prediction is an essential
capability for robots in that it prevents potential collision with a human and
allows the robot to safely make larger movements. In this paper, we present a
method for predicting the trajectory of a human who follows a haptic robotic
guide without using sight, which is valuable for assistive robots that aid the
visually impaired. We apply a deep learning method based on recurrent neural
networks using multimodal data: (1) human trajectory, (2) movement of the
robotic guide, (3) haptic input data measured from the physical interaction
between the human and the robot, (4) human depth data. We collected actual
human trajectory and multimodal response data through indoor experiments. Our
model outperformed the baseline result while using only the robot data with the
observed human trajectory, and it shows even better results when using
