    Logistic traffic - a supply chain management factor in hospitality

    The purpose – The purpose of this paper is based on the fact that managing supply chains as a separate area of business management opens up numerous possibilities for improving the competitive position of business systems. Supply chain management is increasingly often named as the key offensive factor to increasing the efficacy and effectiveness of economic systems. Design – The purpose of the paper is to point to the fact that hospitality logistics fulfils its basic mission only then when high quality products are delivered to the right place, at the right time, in the appropriate assortment, with the lowest internal and external costs, while doing their maximum to meet the wishes, needs and the demand of the customers. Methodology – The methodology is based on proving the proposed hypothesis: Modern logistics traffic represents a condition sine qua non of rational supply chain management in hospitality. Approach – The approach of the paper is based on the fact that supply chain management represents a broader, strategically significant concept which includes the entire supply chain and has the following goals: customer satisfaction, formulating and implementing appropriate strategies and effective supply chain management. Findings – Although each modality of the traffic logistic system has its own specific mission, they all have a common basic mission: to prepare material goods for manipulation, transport and distribution, the actual transport and distribution of material goods and conducting various logistic activities connected to preparing, manipulating, transporting and distributing material goods. The originality of this research – The originality of this research is revisiting the traffic logistics model as an exclusive factor of the competitive micro-hospitality industry in tourist destinations on a theoretical level, which can be set up via simple, complicated and multimodal traffic logistic models in micro-hospitality industries

    Interfaces of the Agriculture 4.0

    The introduction of information technologies in the environmental field is impacting and changing even a traditional sector like agriculture. Nevertheless, Agriculture 4.0 and data-driven decisions should meet user needs and expectations. The paper presents a broad theoretical overview, discussing both the strategic role of design applied to Agri-tech and the issue of User Interface and Interaction as enabling tools in the field. In particular, the paper suggests to rethink the HCD approach, moving on a Human-Decentered Design approach that put together user-technology-environment and the importance of the role of calm technologies as a way to place the farmer, not as a final target and passive spectator, but as an active part of the process to aim the process of mitigation, appropriation from a traditional cultivation method to the 4.0 one

    Redesigning work organizations and technologies: experiences from European projects

    Currently distributed business process (re) design (resulting in components of business networks) basically relies on technical criteria. And that are the main purposes of most research projects supported by EC. Through the process of building a European Research Area, this means a strong influence in the national research programmes. However it is generally accepted that it should also take into account social criteria and aspects such as the quality of working life, or participation in decision processes. Those were some of the objectives of projects in de 80s decade, and framed some of the main concepts and scientific approaches to work organisation. The democratic participation of network and organisations members in the design process is a critical success factor. This is not accepted by everyone, but is based in sufficient case studies. Nevertheless, in order to achieve an optimization that can satisfying the requirements of agility of a network of enterprises, more complex design methods must be developed. Thus, the support to the collaborative design of distributed work in a network of enterprises, through a concurrent approaching business processes, work organisation and task content is a key factor to achieve such purposes.     The development of river-based intermodal transport: the case of Ukraine

    It should be noted that the (inland waterway transport) IWT in Ukraine currently is in its infancy in comparison with other land based transport means (rail and road) and with other countries that possess navigable rivers. This paper is an extension of the research initiated by Grushevska and Notteboom (2015) where the concepts of intermediacy and centrality were introduced in order to assess the role of Ukraine in the global and regional transport networks. The list of key obstacles for Ukraine’s intermediacy function included IWT related barriers such as: (i) deficient inland waterway infrastructure, (ii) high IWT costs (fees for bridges, locks etc.) and (iii) pilotage charges. To date the transportation to/from ports is mainly fulfilled by road or by rail based multimodal transport solutions. We present the unutilized potential of Ukrainian IWT that needs to be efficiently exploited for the benefit of the national economy and national transport system. This study intends to enrich the limited academic research on IWT systems in a transition stage, as exemplified by the case of Ukraine

    PORT REORGANISATION AND THE WORLDS OF PRODUCTION THEORY

    Taking into consideration the new dimensions of port production that have become evident during the resent past, this paper tackles the issue of port reorganisation. In the light of the changes in the world economy and the new competitive environment, the paper focuses on the new structures of the port industry and the characteristics of the contemporary port product within a more general analytical framework of ‘Worlds of Production’. This conceptualisation suggests that neither the industrial model of mass production, nor any other model alone, can determine a single effective pattern of organisation of port production. Within the new reality, modern ports must provide a greater variety of services to port users than in the past. The diversity and complexity of the contemporary port product demand the application of multiple organisational transformations incorporating elements from different possible action frameworks. In this vein, the introduction of intra-port competition, the development of strategic or regional networks, and the reconsideration of the role of port authority turn to critical parameters of the necessary restructuring.Port Industry, reorganisation, worlds of production theory

    The cost of being landlocked : logistics costs and supply chain reliability

    A large proportion of the least developed countries are landlocked and their access to world markets depends on the availability of a trade corridor and transit systems. Based on empirical evidence from World Bank projects and assessments in Africa, Central Asia, and elsewhere, this paper proposes a microeconomic quantitative description of logistics costs. The paper theoretically and empirically highlights that landlocked economies are primarily affected not only by a high cost of freight services but also by the high degree of unpredictability in transportation time. The main sources of costs are not only physical constraints but widespread rent activities and severe flaws in the implementation of the transit systems, which prevent the emergence of reliable logistics services. The business and donor community should push toward implementation of comprehensive facilitation strategies, primarily at the national level, and the design of robust and resilient transport and transit regimes.
