ELVIS: Entertainment-led video summaries

Usually this is achieved by attaching degrees of importance to low-level image, audio and text features. However, video content elicits strong and measurable physiological responses in the user, which are potentially rich indicators of what video content is memorable to or emotionally engaging for an individual user. This article proposes a technique that exploits such physiological responses to a given video stream by a given user to produce Entertainment-Led VIdeo Summaries (ELVIS). ELVIS is made up of five analysis phases which correspond to the analyses of five physiological response measures: electro-dermal response (EDR), heart rate (HR), blood volume pulse (BVP), respiration rate (RR), and respiration amplitude (RA). Through these analyses, the temporal locations of the most entertaining video subsegments, as they occur within the video stream as a whole, are automatically identified. The effectiveness of the ELVIS technique is verified through a statistical analysis of data collected during a set of user trials. Our results show that ELVIS is more consistent than RANDOM, EDR, HR, BVP, RR and RA selections in identifying the most entertaining video subsegments for content in the comedy, horror/comedy, and horror genres. Subjective user reports also reveal that ELVIS video summaries are comparatively easy to understand, enjoyable, and informative
Personalized content retrieval in context using ontological knowledge
Personalized content retrieval aims at improving the retrieval process by taking into account the particular interests of individual users. However, not all user preferences are relevant in all situations. It is well known that human preferences are complex, multiple, heterogeneous, changing, even contradictory, and should be understood in context with the user goals and tasks at hand. In this paper, we propose a method to build a dynamic representation of the semantic context of ongoing retrieval tasks, which is used to activate different subsets of user interests at runtime, in a way that out-of-context preferences are discarded. Our approach is based on an ontology-driven representation of the domain of discourse, providing enriched descriptions of the semantics involved in retrieval actions and preferences, and enabling the definition of effective means to relate preferences and context
Who is the director of this movie? Automatic style recognition based on shot features
We show how low-level formal features, such as shot duration, meant as length
of camera takes, and shot scale, i.e. the distance between the camera and the
subject, are distinctive of a director's style in art movies. So far such
features were thought of not having enough varieties to become distinctive of
an author. However our investigation on the full filmographies of six different
authors (Scorsese, Godard, Tarr, Fellini, Antonioni, and Bergman) for a total
number of 120 movies analysed second by second, confirms that these
shot-related features do not appear as random patterns in movies from the same
director. For feature extraction we adopt methods based on both conventional
and deep learning techniques. Our findings suggest that feature sequential
patterns, i.e. how features evolve in time, are at least as important as the
related feature distributions. To the best of our knowledge this is the first
study dealing with automatic attribution of movie authorship, which opens up
interesting lines of cross-disciplinary research on the impact of style on the
aesthetic and emotional effects on the viewers
Towards Semantic Fast-Forward and Stabilized Egocentric Videos
The emergence of low-cost personal mobiles devices and wearable cameras and
the increasing storage capacity of video-sharing websites have pushed forward a
growing interest towards first-person videos. Since most of the recorded videos
compose long-running streams with unedited content, they are tedious and
unpleasant to watch. The fast-forward state-of-the-art methods are facing
challenges of balancing the smoothness of the video and the emphasis in the
relevant frames given a speed-up rate. In this work, we present a methodology
capable of summarizing and stabilizing egocentric videos by extracting the
semantic information from the frames. This paper also describes a dataset
collection with several semantically labeled videos and introduces a new
smoothness evaluation metric for egocentric videos that is used to test our
