    Image Retrieval in Digital Libraries - A Large Scale Multicollection Experimentation of Machine Learning techniques

    International audienceWhile historically digital heritage libraries were first powered in image mode, they quickly took advantage of OCR technology to index printed collections and consequently improve the scope and performance of the information retrieval services offered to users. But the access to iconographic resources has not progressed in the same way, and the latter remain in the shadows: manual incomplete and heterogeneous indexation, data silos by iconographic genre. Today, however, it would be possible to make better use of these resources, especially by exploiting the enormous volumes of OCR produced during the last two decades, and thus valorize these engravings, drawings, photographs, maps, etc. for their own value but also as an attractive entry point into the collections, supporting discovery and serenpidity from document to document and collection to collection. This article presents an ETL (extract-transform-load) approach to this need, that aims to: Identify andextract iconography wherever it may be found, in image collections but also in printed materials (dailies, magazines, monographies); Transform, harmonize and enrich the image descriptive metadata (in particular with machine learning classification tools); Load it all into a web app dedicated to image retrieval. The approach is pragmatically dual, since it involves leveraging existing digital resources and (virtually) on-the-shelf technologies.Si historiquement, les bibliothèques numériques patrimoniales furent d’abord alimentées par des images, elles profitèrent rapidement de la technologie OCR pour indexer les collections imprimées afin d’améliorer périmètre et performance du service de recherche d’information offert aux utilisateurs. Aujourd’hui, il serait pourtant possible de mieux valoriser ces ressources, en particulier en exploitant les énormes volumes d’OCR produits durant les deux dernières décennies (tant comme descripteur textuel que pour l’identification automatique des illustrations imprimées). Et ainsi mettre en valeur ces gravures, dessins, photographies, cartes, etc. pour leur valeur propre mais aussi comme point d’entrée dans les collections, en favorisant découverte et rebond de document en document, de collection à collection. Cet article décrit une approche ETL (extract-transform-load) appliquée aux images d’une bibliothèque numérique à vocation encyclopédique : identifier et extraire l’iconographie partout où elle se trouve (dans les collections image mais aussi dans les imprimés : presse, revue, monographie) ; transformer, harmoniser et enrichir ses métadonnées descriptives grâce à des techniques d’apprentissage machine – machine learning – pour la classification et l’indexation automatiques ; charger ces données dans une application web dédiée à la recherche iconographique (ou dans d’autres services de la bibliothèque).     Overture and Beginners Please! A Call for Performing Arts Metadata at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

    In August 1947, Scotland hosted its first Edinburgh International Festival of Music and Drama. Unbeknownst, it simultaneously hosted an uninvited set of eight theatre troupes, whose performances included a staging of Macbeth, alongside Marionette puppet plays. These undeterred artists set into motion what would become the single largest celebration of arts and culture in the world: the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The year 2017 is the Festival’s 70th Anniversary. Yet, little attention has been paid to its documentation and description. The literature suggests that metadata schemas dedicated to performing arts are recent, and none have been explored in the context of the Fringe. This research project conducts a case study of an archival collection entitled Follow the Fringe. It employs qualitative content analysis to explore how well the current metadata schemas modeled for performing arts address the descriptive needs of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.Master of Science in Library Scienc

    CASE STUDY OF CHINESE IMMIGRANT CHILDREN’S BILINGUAL LITERACY (MANDARIN AND ENGLISH) PRACTICES AT HOME, AT SCHOOL, AND IN A COMMUNITY LANGUAGE SCHOOL IN SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO CANADA

    The demographic context of Canada, a multicultural and multilingual country, provides an exciting research site for the investigation of immigrant children’s bilingual literacy practices. According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada 2006, the People\u27s Republic of China has been the top source country of immigrants to Canada, and Mandarin has been reported as the top minority language since 1998. It is worthwhile to explore the bilingual literacy practices of young Chinese immigrant children in Ontario, where fifty percent of immigrants have chosen to settle. This research project consisted of a qualitative case study. Semi-structured interviews and classroom observations were employed as the main tools of data collection. Family visits were made, and artwork and documents were also collected as supplementary sources of data. Interpretational and domain analysis methods were used to analyze the data (Gall, Gall & Borg, 2007; Wolcott, 1994). Findings of the study indicate that there is a complementary learning community, including a formal public school education, supportive community language school and home literacy environments facilitating the five participating children\u27s bilingual literacy development. The public school culture, parents\u27 perceptions and support of their children’s bilingual literacy development, as well as the community Chinese language school have all influenced the five participating children\u27s biliteracy development. Based on the findings, this study makes suggestions for teachers, parents and curriculum designers. Public schools should create democratic school cultures where minority iii children\u27s culture and first languages are valued and embraced. Teachers should apply effective literacy instruction to help minority children\u27s bilingual literacy development in an authentic literacy environment. Curriculum designers should pay attention to English language learners’ cultural backgrounds and meet diverse teachers\u27 and children\u27s needs

The essays deal with different aspects of corpus linguistics both as a methodology and as a branch of Linguistics.[Abstract] The collection of essays we are presenting here are just a mere sample of the interest the topics relating to Corpus Linguistics have arisen everywhere. Such different topics as those related to Computational Linguistics found in “Obtaining computational resources for languages with scarce resources from closely related computationally-developed languages. The Galician and Portuguese case“ or “Corpus-Based Modelling of Lexical Changes in Manic Depression Disorders: The Case of Edgar Allan Poe” belonging to the field of Corpus and Literary Studies can be found in the ensuing pages. Almost all research areas can nowadays be investigated using Corpus Linguistics as a valid methodology. This is reason why Language Windowing through Corpora gathers papers dealing with discourse, variation and change, grammatical studies, lexicology and lexicography, corpus design, contrastive analyses, language acquisition and learning or translation. This work’s title aims at reflecting not only the great variety of topics gathered in it but also the worldwide interest awaken by the computer processing of language. In fact, researchers from many different institutions all over the world have contributed to this book. Apart from the twenty-two Spanish Universities, people from other Higher Education Institutions have authored and co-authored the essays contained here, namely, Russia, Venezuela, Brazil, UK, Finland, Portugal, Poland, Austria, Mexico, Thailand, Iran, the Netherlands, Belgium, Japan, Turkey, China, Italy, Malaysia, Romania and Sweden.
