A Turbo Detection and Sphere-Packing-Modulation-Aided Space-Time Coding Scheme
Arecently proposed space-time block-coding (STBC) signal-construction method that combines orthogonal design with sphere packing (SP), referred to here as STBC-SP, has shown useful performance improvements over Alamouti’s conventional orthogonal design. In this contribution, we demonstrate that the performance of STBC-SP systems can be further improved by concatenating SP-aided modulation with channel coding and performing demapping as well as channel decoding iteratively. We also investigate the convergence behavior of this concatenated scheme with the aid of extrinsic-information-transfer charts. The proposed turbo-detected STBC-SP scheme exhibits a “turbo-cliff” at Eb/N0 = 2.5 dB and provides Eb/N0 gains of approximately 20.2 and 2.0 dB at a bit error rate of 10?5 over an equivalent throughput uncoded STBC-SP scheme and a turbo-detected quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulated STBC scheme, respectively, when communicating over a correlated Rayleigh fading channel. Iteratively Decoded Irregular Variable Length Coding and Sphere-Packing Modulation-Aided Differential Space-Time Spreading
In this paper we consider serially concatenated and iteratively decoded Irregular Variable Length Coding (IrVLC) combined with precoded Differential Space-Time Spreading (DSTS) aided multidimensional Sphere Packing (SP) modulation designed for near-capacity joint source and channel coding. The IrVLC scheme comprises a number of component Variable Length Coding (VLC) codebooks having different coding rates for the sake of encoding particular fractions of the input source symbol stream. The relative length of these source-stream fractions can be chosen with the aid of EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts in order to shape the EXIT curve of the IrVLC codec, so that an open EXIT chart tunnel may be created even at low Eb/N0 values that are close to the capacity bound of the channel. These schemes are shown to be capable of operating within 0.9 dB of the DSTS-SP channel’s capacity bound using an average interleaver length of 113, 100 bits and an effective bandwidth efficiency of 1 bit/s/Hz, assuming ideal Nyquist filtering. By contrast, the equivalent-rate regular VLC-based benchmarker scheme was found to be capable of operating at 1.4 dB from the capacity bound, which is about 1.56 times the corresponding discrepancy of the proposed IrVLC-aided scheme
Error control techniques for satellite and space communications
Shannon's capacity bound shows that coding can achieve large reductions in the required signal to noise ratio per information bit (E sub b/N sub 0 where E sub b is the energy per bit and (N sub 0)/2 is the double sided noise density) in comparison to uncoded schemes. For bandwidth efficiencies of 2 bit/sym or greater, these improvements were obtained through the use of Trellis Coded Modulation and Block Coded Modulation. A method of obtaining these high efficiencies using multidimensional Multiple Phase Shift Keying (MPSK) and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) signal sets with trellis coding is described. These schemes have advantages in decoding speed, phase transparency, and coding gain in comparison to other trellis coding schemes. Finally, a general parity check equation for rotationally invariant trellis codes is introduced from which non-linear codes for two dimensional MPSK and QAM signal sets are found. These codes are fully transparent to all rotations of the signal set
Multidimensional Trellis Coded Phase Modulation Using a Multilevel Concatenation Approach
In this paper, we will use the construction technique proposed in to construct multidimensional trellis coded modulation (TCM) codes for both the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and the fading channels. Analytical performance bounds and simulation results show that these codes perform very well and achieve significant coding gains over uncoded reference modulation systems. In addition, the proposed technique can be used to construct codes which have a performance/decoding complexity advantage over the codes listed in literature
On the MIMO Channel Capacity of Multi-Dimensional Signal Sets
In this contribution we evaluate the capacity of Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) systems using multi-dimensional PSK/QAM signal sets. It was shown that transmit diversity is capable of narrowing the gap between the capacity of the Rayleigh-fading channel and the AWGN channel. However, since this gap becomes narrower when the receiver diversity order is increased, for higher-order receiver diversity the performance advantage of transmit diversity diminishes. A MIMO system having full multiplexing gain has a higher achievable throughput than the corresponding MIMO system designed for full diversity gain, although this is attained at the cost of a higher complexity and a higher SNR. The tradeoffs between diversity gain, multiplexing gain, complexity and bandwidth are studied
Space-Time Signal Design for Multilevel Polar Coding in Slow Fading Broadcast Channels
Slow fading broadcast channels can model a wide range of applications in
wireless networks. Due to delay requirements and the unavailability of the
channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), these channels for many
applications are non-ergodic. The appropriate measure for designing signals in
non-ergodic channels is the outage probability. In this paper, we provide a
method to optimize STBCs based on the outage probability at moderate SNRs.
Multilevel polar coded-modulation is a new class of coded-modulation techniques
that benefits from low complexity decoders and simple rate matching. In this
paper, we derive the outage optimality condition for multistage decoding and
propose a rule for determining component code rates. We also derive an upper
bound on the outage probability of STBCs for designing the
set-partitioning-based labelling. Finally, due to the optimality of the
outage-minimized STBCs for long codes, we introduce a novel method for the
joint optimization of short-to-moderate length polar codes and STBCs
Coded Adaptive Linear Precoded Discrete Multitone Over PLC Channel
Discrete multitone modulation (DMT) systems exploit the capabilities of
orthogonal subcarriers to cope efficiently with narrowband interference, high
frequency attenuations and multipath fadings with the help of simple
equalization filters. Adaptive linear precoded discrete multitone (LP-DMT)
system is based on classical DMT, combined with a linear precoding component.
In this paper, we investigate the bit and energy allocation algorithm of an
adaptive LP-DMT system taking into account the channel coding scheme. A coded
adaptive LPDMT system is presented in the power line communication (PLC)
context with a loading algorithm which accommodates the channel coding gains in
bit and energy calculations. The performance of a concatenated channel coding
scheme, consisting of an inner Wei's 4-dimensional 16-states trellis code and
an outer Reed-Solomon code, in combination with the proposed algorithm is
analyzed. Theoretical coding gains are derived and simulation results are
presented for a fixed target bit error rate in a multicarrier scenario under
power spectral density constraint. Using a multipath model of PLC channel, it
is shown that the proposed coded adaptive LP-DMT system performs better than
coded DMT and can achieve higher throughput for PLC applications
