A QoE adaptive management system for high definition video streaming over wireless networks
[EN] The development of the smart devices had led to demanding high-quality streaming videos over wireless communications. In Multimedia technology, the Ultra-High Definition (UHD) video quality has an important role due to the smart devices that are capable of capturing and processing high-quality video content. Since delivery of the high-quality video stream over the wireless networks adds challenges to the end-users, the network behaviors 'factors such as delay of arriving packets, delay variation between packets, and packet loss, are impacted on the Quality of Experience (QoE). Moreover, the characteristics of the video and the devices are other impacts, which influenced by the QoE. In this research work, the influence of the involved parameters is studied based on characteristics of the video, wireless channel capacity, and receivers' aspects, which collapse the QoE. Then, the impact of the aforementioned parameters on both subjective and objective QoE is studied. A smart algorithm for video stream services is proposed to optimize assessing and managing the QoE of clients (end-users). The proposed algorithm includes two approaches: first, using the machine-learning model to predict QoE. Second, according to the QoE prediction, the algorithm manages the video quality of the end-users by offering better video quality. As a result, the proposed algorithm which based on the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression is outperformed previously proposed methods for predicting and managing QoE of streaming video over wireless networks. This work has been partially supported by the "Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad" in the "Programa Estatal de Fomento de la Investigacion Cientifica y Tecnica de Excelencia, Subprograma Estatal de Generacion de Conocimiento" with in the Project under Grant TIN2017-84802-C2-1-P. Moving P2P Live Streaming to Mobile and Ubiquitous Environment
Media streams distribution over a wired network to static hosts can be realized by Client/Server mode or Peer-to-Peer overlay networks. However, if the end hosts are mobile over heterogeneous wireless access networks, one needs to consider many operational issues such as network detection, handoff, join and leave latency, and desired level of quality of service, as well as caching. In the latest researches, one popular P2P live streaming system, called AnySee, over the wired network, has been deployed and widely used. Based on the AnySee system, this paper proposed and implemented one hybrid live streaming system, AnySee-Mobile, under wired and wireless environment. In the system, one wireless peer will be selected to act as an agent. One agent has two main functions, to request media from P2P overlay network as a normal peer, and to multicast media to WLAN as a multicast source. In this paper we study, how to elect one multicast agent in WLAN. Several experimentations have been made and proved that the system has good user experiences and performances
Resource Allocation Frameworks for Network-coded Layered Multimedia Multicast Services
The explosive growth of content-on-the-move, such as video streaming to
mobile devices, has propelled research on multimedia broadcast and multicast
schemes. Multi-rate transmission strategies have been proposed as a means of
delivering layered services to users experiencing different downlink channel
conditions. In this paper, we consider Point-to-Multipoint layered service
delivery across a generic cellular system and improve it by applying different
random linear network coding approaches. We derive packet error probability
expressions and use them as performance metrics in the formulation of resource
allocation frameworks. The aim of these frameworks is both the optimization of
the transmission scheme and the minimization of the number of broadcast packets
on each downlink channel, while offering service guarantees to a predetermined
fraction of users. As a case of study, our proposed frameworks are then adapted
to the LTE-A standard and the eMBMS technology. We focus on the delivery of a
video service based on the H.264/SVC standard and demonstrate the advantages of
layered network coding over multi-rate transmission. Furthermore, we establish
that the choice of both the network coding technique and resource allocation
method play a critical role on the network footprint, and the quality of each
received video layer.Comment: IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications - Special Issue on

Massive MIMO Multicasting in Noncooperative Cellular Networks
We study the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multicast
transmission in cellular networks where each base station (BS) is equipped with
a large-scale antenna array and transmits a common message using a single
beamformer to multiple mobile users. We first show that when each BS knows the
perfect channel state information (CSI) of its own served users, the
asymptotically optimal beamformer at each BS is a linear combination of the
channel vectors of its multicast users. Moreover, the optimal combining
coefficients are obtained in closed form. Then we consider the imperfect CSI
scenario where the CSI is obtained through uplink channel estimation in
timedivision duplex systems. We propose a new pilot scheme that estimates the
composite channel which is a linear combination of the individual channels of
multicast users in each cell. This scheme is able to completely eliminate pilot
contamination. The pilot power control for optimizing the multicast beamformer
at each BS is also derived. Numerical results show that the asymptotic
performance of the proposed scheme is close to the ideal case with perfect CSI.
Simulation also verifies the effectiveness of the proposed scheme with finite
number of antennas at each BS.Comment: to appear in IEEE JSAC Special Issue on 5G Wireless Communication
