Exploring the resource recovery potentials of municipal solid waste: a review of solid wastes composting in developing countries
Population explosion, high urbanization and improved living standards have induced rapid changes in quantities and materiacompositions of solid waste generation globally. Until recently solid waste disposal in landfills and open dump sites waconsidered more economical and it is the most widely used methods in developing countries. Hence the potentials in the othealternative methods such as the resource recovery and recycling and their integration into waste management have been scarcelassessed. However, the ever growing challenges posed by the rapidly increasing quantities and compositions of solid wastes ideveloping countries led to the searching for alternative waste disposal methods. In this regard the paper presented an assessmenof the resource potentials of municipal solid waste materials arising from cities in developing countries as a strategy fosustainable solid waste management. Using published data on solid waste composition the paper has identified that there is higpotentials of composting in the solid waste stream from cities in developing countries. In conclusion, it recommended the recoverof organic waste material and papers for composting and the recycling of plastic, metals, textiles and others to explore their resource recovery potentials. This will largely reduce the ultimate quantities of solid waste for disposal and lower the operatincosts. This strategy will achieve sustainable waste management in developing countries. It is hoped that the paper has provided useful guide for wastes management policy decisions in developing countries
A Boxology of Design Patterns for Hybrid Learning and Reasoning Systems
We propose a set of compositional design patterns to describe a large variety
of systems that combine statistical techniques from machine learning with
symbolic techniques from knowledge representation. As in other areas of
computer science (knowledge engineering, software engineering, ontology
engineering, process mining and others), such design patterns help to
systematize the literature, clarify which combinations of techniques serve
which purposes, and encourage re-use of software components. We have validated
our set of compositional design patterns against a large body of recent
literature.Comment: 12 pages,55 reference
Application of Neural-Like P Systems With State Values for Power Coordination of Photovoltaic/Battery Microgrids
The power coordination control of a photovoltaic/battery microgrid is performed with a novel
bio-computing model within the framework of membrane computing. First, a neural-like P system with
state values (SVNPS) is proposed for describing complex logical relationships between different modes
of Photovoltaic (PV) units and energy storage units. After comparing the objects in the neurons with the
thresholds, state values will be obtained to determine the con guration of the SVNPS. Considering the
characteristics of PV/battery microgrids, an operation control strategy based on bus voltages of the point of
common coupling and charging/discharging statuses of batteries is proposed. At rst, the SVNPS is used to
construct the complicated unit working modes; each unit of the microgrid can adjust the operation modes
automatically. After that, the output power of each unit is reasonably coordinated to ensure the operation
stability of the microgrid. Finally, a PV/battery microgrid, including two PV units, one storage unit, and
some loads are taken into consideration, and experimental results show the feasibility and effectiveness of
the proposed control strategy and the SVNPS-based power coordination control models
BIOLOGICAL INSPIRED INTRUSION PREVENTION AND SELF-HEALING SYSTEM FOR CRITICAL SERVICES NETWORK
With the explosive development of the critical services network systems and Internet, the need for networks security systems have become even critical with the enlargement of information technology in everyday life. Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) provides an in-line mechanism focus on identifying and blocking malicious network activity in real time. This thesis presents new intrusion prevention and self-healing system (SH) for critical services network security. The design features of the proposed system are inspired by the human immune system, integrated with pattern recognition nonlinear classification algorithm and machine learning. Firstly, the current intrusions preventions systems, biological innate and adaptive immune systems, autonomic computing and self-healing mechanisms are studied and analyzed. The importance of intrusion prevention system recommends that artificial immune systems (AIS) should incorporate abstraction models from innate, adaptive immune system, pattern recognition, machine learning and self-healing mechanisms to present autonomous IPS system with fast and high accurate detection and prevention performance and survivability for critical services network system. Secondly, specification language, system design, mathematical and computational models for IPS and SH system are established, which are based upon nonlinear classification, prevention predictability trust, analysis, self-adaptation and self-healing algorithms. Finally, the validation of the system carried out by simulation tests, measuring, benchmarking and comparative studies. New benchmarking metrics for detection capabilities, prevention predictability trust and self-healing reliability are introduced as contributions for the IPS and SH system measuring and validation.
Using the software system, design theories, AIS features, new nonlinear classification algorithm, and self-healing system show how the use of presented systems can ensure safety for critical services networks and heal the damage caused by intrusion. This autonomous system improves the performance of the current intrusion prevention system and carries on system continuity by using self-healing mechanism
Predictive biometrics: A review and analysis of predicting personal characteristics from biometric data
Interest in the exploitation of soft biometrics information has continued to develop over the last decade or so. In comparison with traditional biometrics, which focuses principally on person identification, the idea of soft biometrics processing is to study the utilisation of more general information regarding a system user, which is not necessarily unique. There are increasing indications that this type of data will have great value in providing complementary information for user authentication. However, the authors have also seen a growing interest in broadening the predictive capabilities of biometric data, encompassing both easily definable characteristics such as subject age and, most recently, `higher level' characteristics such as emotional or mental states. This study will present a selective review of the predictive capabilities, in the widest sense, of biometric data processing, providing an analysis of the key issues still adequately to be addressed if this concept of predictive biometrics is to be fully exploited in the future
