    A fast and accurate basis pursuit denoising algorithm with application to super-resolving tomographic SAR

    L1L_1 regularization is used for finding sparse solutions to an underdetermined linear system. As sparse signals are widely expected in remote sensing, this type of regularization scheme and its extensions have been widely employed in many remote sensing problems, such as image fusion, target detection, image super-resolution, and others and have led to promising results. However, solving such sparse reconstruction problems is computationally expensive and has limitations in its practical use. In this paper, we proposed a novel efficient algorithm for solving the complex-valued L1L_1 regularized least squares problem. Taking the high-dimensional tomographic synthetic aperture radar (TomoSAR) as a practical example, we carried out extensive experiments, both with simulation data and real data, to demonstrate that the proposed approach can retain the accuracy of second order methods while dramatically speeding up the processing by one or two orders.     Support Detection for SAR Tomographic Reconstructions from Compressive Measurements

    The problem of detecting and locating multiple scatterers in multibaseline Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) tomography, starting from compressive measurements and applying support detection techniques, is addressed. Different approaches based on the detection of the support set of the unknown sparse vector, that is, of the position of the nonzero elements in the unknown sparse vector, are analyzed. Support detection techniques have already proved to allow a reduction in the number of measurements required for obtaining a reliable solution. In this paper, a support detection method, based on a Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (Sup-GLRT), is proposed and compared with the SequOMP method, in terms of probability of detection achievable with a given probability of false alarm and for different numbers of measurements

    Sub-aperture SAR Imaging with Uncertainty Quantification

    In the problem of spotlight mode airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image formation, it is well-known that data collected over a wide azimuthal angle violate the isotropic scattering property typically assumed. Many techniques have been proposed to account for this issue, including both full-aperture and sub-aperture methods based on filtering, regularized least squares, and Bayesian methods. A full-aperture method that uses a hierarchical Bayesian prior to incorporate appropriate speckle modeling and reduction was recently introduced to produce samples of the posterior density rather than a single image estimate. This uncertainty quantification information is more robust as it can generate a variety of statistics for the scene. As proposed, the method was not well-suited for large problems, however, as the sampling was inefficient. Moreover, the method was not explicitly designed to mitigate the effects of the faulty isotropic scattering assumption. In this work we therefore propose a new sub-aperture SAR imaging method that uses a sparse Bayesian learning-type algorithm to more efficiently produce approximate posterior densities for each sub-aperture window. These estimates may be useful in and of themselves, or when of interest, the statistics from these distributions can be combined to form a composite image. Furthermore, unlike the often-employed lp-regularized least squares methods, no user-defined parameters are required. Application-specific adjustments are made to reduce the typically burdensome runtime and storage requirements so that appropriately large images can be generated. Finally, this paper focuses on incorporating these techniques into SAR image formation process. That is, for the problem starting with SAR phase history data, so that no additional processing errors are incurred

    Very High Resolution Tomographic SAR Inversion for Urban Infrastructure Monitoring — A Sparse and Nonlinear Tour

    The topic of this thesis is very high resolution (VHR) tomographic SAR inversion for urban infrastructure monitoring. To this end, SAR tomography and differential SAR tomography are demonstrated using TerraSAR-X spotlight data for providing 3-D and 4-D (spatial-temporal) maps of an entire high rise city area including layover separation and estimation of deformation of the buildings. A compressive sensing based estimator (SL1MMER) tailored to VHR SAR data is developed for tomographic SAR inversion by exploiting the sparsity of the signal. A systematic performance assessment of the algorithm is performed regarding elevation estimation accuracy, super-resolution and robustness. A generalized time warp method is proposed which enables differential SAR tomography to estimate multi-component nonlinear motion. All developed methods are validated with both simulated and extensive processing of large volumes of real data from TerraSAR-X

    Sparse representation based hyperspectral image compression and classification

    Abstract This thesis presents a research work on applying sparse representation to lossy hyperspectral image compression and hyperspectral image classification. The proposed lossy hyperspectral image compression framework introduces two types of dictionaries distinguished by the terms sparse representation spectral dictionary (SRSD) and multi-scale spectral dictionary (MSSD), respectively. The former is learnt in the spectral domain to exploit the spectral correlations, and the latter in wavelet multi-scale spectral domain to exploit both spatial and spectral correlations in hyperspectral images. To alleviate the computational demand of dictionary learning, either a base dictionary trained offline or an update of the base dictionary is employed in the compression framework. The proposed compression method is evaluated in terms of different objective metrics, and compared to selected state-of-the-art hyperspectral image compression schemes, including JPEG 2000. The numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness and competitiveness of both SRSD and MSSD approaches. For the proposed hyperspectral image classification method, we utilize the sparse coefficients for training support vector machine (SVM) and k-nearest neighbour (kNN) classifiers. In particular, the discriminative character of the sparse coefficients is enhanced by incorporating contextual information using local mean filters. The classification performance is evaluated and compared to a number of similar or representative methods. The results show that our approach could outperform other approaches based on SVM or sparse representation. This thesis makes the following contributions. It provides a relatively thorough investigation of applying sparse representation to lossy hyperspectral image compression. Specifically, it reveals the effectiveness of sparse representation for the exploitation of spectral correlations in hyperspectral images. In addition, we have shown that the discriminative character of sparse coefficients can lead to superior performance in hyperspectral image classification.EM201

    3D reconstruction and object recognition from 2D SONAR data

    Accurate and meaningful representations of the environment are required for autonomy in underwater applications. Thanks to favourable propagation properties in water, acoustic sensors are commonly preferred to video cameras and lasers but do not provide direct 3D information. This thesis addresses the 3D reconstruction of underwater scenes from 2D imaging SONAR data as well as the recognition of objects of interest in the reconstructed scene. We present two 3D reconstruction methods and two model-based object recognition methods. We evaluate our algorithms on multiple scenarios including data gathered by an AUV. We show the ability to reconstruct underwater environments at centimetre-level accuracy using 2D SONARs of any aperture. We demonstrate the recognition of structures of interest on a medium-sized oil-field type environment providing accurate yet low memory footprint semantic world models. We conclude that accurate 3D semantic representations of partially-structured marine environments can be obtained from commonly embedded 2D SONARs, enabling online world modelling, relocalisation and model-based applications

    Study on THz Imaging System for Concealed Threats Detection.

    PhD ThesisMany research groups have conducted studies on Terahertz technology for various applications in the last decades. THz imaging for personnel screening is one prospective application due in part to its superior performance compared with imaging microwave bands. Because of the demand for the accurate detection, it is desirable to devise a high-performance THz imaging system for concealed threats detection. Therefore, this thesis presents my research on the low-cost THz imaging system for security detection. The key contributions of this research lie in investigating the linear sparse periodic array (SPA) THz imaging system for concealed threats detection, improving the traditional reconstruction algorithm of Generalized Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (GSAFT) to suppress the ghost images and applying the compressive sensing technique into the proposed SPA-THz imaging system to reduce the sampling data but maintain the image quality. The first part of the work is to investigate the linear sparse periodic array (SPA) and its configuration with large element spacing in simulation, deriving the design guideline for such a SPA THz imaging system. Meanwhile, the improved GSAFT reconstruction algorithm and multi-pass interferometric synthetic aperture imaging technique have been proposed to suppress the ghost image and improve the image quality, respectively. Secondly, the compressive sensing technique has been investigated to reduce the sampling data. Therefore, we have proposed the corresponding discrete CS SPA-THz reconstruction model and verified it in simulation. Finally, we have devised a simplified experimental set-up to assess the practical imaging performance, verifying the proposed SPA-THz imaging system. The set-up only uses 1 Tx and 1 Rx scanning on two separate tracks to effectively realize the proposed imaging system. The reconstructed images by the GSAFT and CS approaches with the measured data have both shown good consistency with the simulated results, respectively.     Elevation and Deformation Extraction from TomoSAR

    3D SAR tomography (TomoSAR) and 4D SAR differential tomography (Diff-TomoSAR) exploit multi-baseline SAR data stacks to provide an essential innovation of SAR Interferometry for many applications, sensing complex scenes with multiple scatterers mapped into the same SAR pixel cell. However, these are still influenced by DEM uncertainty, temporal decorrelation, orbital, tropospheric and ionospheric phase distortion and height blurring. In this thesis, these techniques are explored. As part of this exploration, the systematic procedures for DEM generation, DEM quality assessment, DEM quality improvement and DEM applications are first studied. Besides, this thesis focuses on the whole cycle of systematic methods for 3D & 4D TomoSAR imaging for height and deformation retrieval, from the problem formation phase, through the development of methods to testing on real SAR data. After DEM generation introduction from spaceborne bistatic InSAR (TanDEM-X) and airborne photogrammetry (Bluesky), a new DEM co-registration method with line feature validation (river network line, ridgeline, valley line, crater boundary feature and so on) is developed and demonstrated to assist the study of a wide area DEM data quality. This DEM co-registration method aligns two DEMs irrespective of the linear distortion model, which improves the quality of DEM vertical comparison accuracy significantly and is suitable and helpful for DEM quality assessment. A systematic TomoSAR algorithm and method have been established, tested, analysed and demonstrated for various applications (urban buildings, bridges, dams) to achieve better 3D & 4D tomographic SAR imaging results. These include applying Cosmo-Skymed X band single-polarisation data over the Zipingpu dam, Dujiangyan, Sichuan, China, to map topography; and using ALOS L band data in the San Francisco Bay region to map urban building and bridge. A new ionospheric correction method based on the tile method employing IGS TEC data, a split-spectrum and an ionospheric model via least squares are developed to correct ionospheric distortion to improve the accuracy of 3D & 4D tomographic SAR imaging. Meanwhile, a pixel by pixel orbit baseline estimation method is developed to address the research gaps of baseline estimation for 3D & 4D spaceborne SAR tomography imaging. Moreover, a SAR tomography imaging algorithm and a differential tomography four-dimensional SAR imaging algorithm based on compressive sensing, SAR interferometry phase (InSAR) calibration reference to DEM with DEM error correction, a new phase error calibration and compensation algorithm, based on PS, SVD, PGA, weighted least squares and minimum entropy, are developed to obtain accurate 3D & 4D tomographic SAR imaging results. The new baseline estimation method and consequent TomoSAR processing results showed that an accurate baseline estimation is essential to build up the TomoSAR model. After baseline estimation, phase calibration experiments (via FFT and Capon method) indicate that a phase calibration step is indispensable for TomoSAR imaging, which eventually influences the inversion results. A super-resolution reconstruction CS based study demonstrates X band data with the CS method does not fit for forest reconstruction but works for reconstruction of large civil engineering structures such as dams and urban buildings. Meanwhile, the L band data with FFT, Capon and the CS method are shown to work for the reconstruction of large manmade structures (such as bridges) and urban buildings

    The Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing (PSB) 2023 is an international, multidisciplinary conference for the presentation and discussion of current research in the theory and application of computational methods in problems of biological significance. Presentations are rigorously peer reviewed and are published in an archival proceedings volume. PSB 2023 will be held on January 3-7, 2023 in Kohala Coast, Hawaii. Tutorials and workshops will be offered prior to the start of the conference.PSB 2023 will bring together top researchers from the US, the Asian Pacific nations, and around the world to exchange research results and address open issues in all aspects of computational biology. It is a forum for the presentation of work in databases, algorithms, interfaces, visualization, modeling, and other computational methods, as applied to biological problems, with emphasis on applications in data-rich areas of molecular biology.The PSB has been designed to be responsive to the need for critical mass in sub-disciplines within biocomputing. For that reason, it is the only meeting whose sessions are defined dynamically each year in response to specific proposals. PSB sessions are organized by leaders of research in biocomputing's 'hot topics.' In this way, the meeting provides an early forum for serious examination of emerging methods and approaches in this rapidly changing field
