    Multi-view constrained clustering with an incomplete mapping between views

    Multi-view learning algorithms typically assume a complete bipartite mapping between the different views in order to exchange information during the learning process. However, many applications provide only a partial mapping between the views, creating a challenge for current methods. To address this problem, we propose a multi-view algorithm based on constrained clustering that can operate with an incomplete mapping. Given a set of pairwise constraints in each view, our approach propagates these constraints using a local similarity measure to those instances that can be mapped to the other views, allowing the propagated constraints to be transferred across views via the partial mapping. It uses co-EM to iteratively estimate the propagation within each view based on the current clustering model, transfer the constraints across views, and then update the clustering model. By alternating the learning process between views, this approach produces a unified clustering model that is consistent with all views. We show that this approach significantly improves clustering performance over several other methods for transferring constraints and allows multi-view clustering to be reliably applied when given a limited mapping between the views. Our evaluation reveals that the propagated constraints have high precision with respect to the true clusters in the data, explaining their benefit to clustering performance in both single- and multi-view learning scenarios

    Consensus graph and spectral representation for one-step multi-view kernel based clustering

    Recently, multi-view clustering has received much attention in the fields of machine learning and pattern recognition. Spectral clustering for single and multiple views has been the common solution. Despite its good clustering performance, it has a major limitation: it requires an extra step of clustering. This extra step, which could be the famous k-means clustering, depends heavily on initialization, which may affect the quality of the clustering result. To overcome this problem, a new method called Multiview Clustering via Consensus Graph Learning and Nonnegative Embedding (MVCGE) is presented in this paper. In the proposed approach, the consensus affinity matrix (graph matrix), consensus representation and cluster index matrix (nonnegative embedding) are learned simultaneously in a unified framework. Our proposed method takes as input the different kernel matrices corresponding to the different views. The proposed learning model integrates two interesting constraints: (i) the cluster indices should be as smooth as possible over the consensus graph and (ii) the cluster indices are set to be as close as possible to the graph convolution of the consensus representation. In this approach, no post-processing such as k-means or spectral rotation is required. Our approach is tested with real and synthetic datasets. The experiments performed show that the proposed method performs well compared to many state-of-the-art approaches

    Geometric Structure Extraction and Reconstruction

    Geometric structure extraction and reconstruction is a long-standing problem in research communities including computer graphics, computer vision, and machine learning. Within different communities, it can be interpreted as different subproblems such as skeleton extraction from the point cloud, surface reconstruction from multi-view images, or manifold learning from high dimensional data. All these subproblems are building blocks of many modern applications, such as scene reconstruction for AR/VR, object recognition for robotic vision and structural analysis for big data. Despite its importance, the extraction and reconstruction of a geometric structure from real-world data are ill-posed, where the main challenges lie in the incompleteness, noise, and inconsistency of the raw input data. To address these challenges, three studies are conducted in this thesis: i) a new point set representation for shape completion, ii) a structure-aware data consolidation method, and iii) a data-driven deep learning technique for multi-view consistency. In addition to theoretical contributions, the algorithms we proposed significantly improve the performance of several state-of-the-art geometric structure extraction and reconstruction approaches, validated by extensive experimental results

    A Survey on Label-efficient Deep Image Segmentation: Bridging the Gap between Weak Supervision and Dense Prediction

    The rapid development of deep learning has made a great progress in image segmentation, one of the fundamental tasks of computer vision. However, the current segmentation algorithms mostly rely on the availability of pixel-level annotations, which are often expensive, tedious, and laborious. To alleviate this burden, the past years have witnessed an increasing attention in building label-efficient, deep-learning-based image segmentation algorithms. This paper offers a comprehensive review on label-efficient image segmentation methods. To this end, we first develop a taxonomy to organize these methods according to the supervision provided by different types of weak labels (including no supervision, inexact supervision, incomplete supervision and inaccurate supervision) and supplemented by the types of segmentation problems (including semantic segmentation, instance segmentation and panoptic segmentation). Next, we summarize the existing label-efficient image segmentation methods from a unified perspective that discusses an important question: how to bridge the gap between weak supervision and dense prediction -- the current methods are mostly based on heuristic priors, such as cross-pixel similarity, cross-label constraint, cross-view consistency, and cross-image relation.
