    Towards An Optimal Core Optical Network Using Overflow Channels

    This dissertation is based on a traditional circuit switched core WDM network that is supplemented by a pool of wavelengths that carry optical burst switched overflow data. These overflow channels function to absorb channel overflows from traditional circuit switched networks and they also provide wavelengths for newer, high bandwidth applications. The channel overflows that appear at the overflow layer as optical bursts are either carried over a permanently configured, primary light path, or over a burst-switched, best-effort path while traversing the core network. At every successive hop along the best effort path, the optical bursts will attempt to enter a primary light path to its destination. Thus, each node in the network is a Hybrid Node that will provide entry for optical bursts to hybrid path that is made of a point to point, pre-provisioned light path or a burst switched path. The dissertation's main outcome is to determine the cost optimality of a Hybrid Route, to analyze cost-effectiveness of a Hybrid Node and compare it to a route and a node performing non-hybrid operation, respectively. Finally, an example network that consists of several Hybrid Routes and Hybrid Nodes is analyzed for its cost-effectiveness. Cost-effectiveness and optimality of a Hybrid Route is tested for its dependency on the mean and variance of channel demands offered to the route, the number of sources sharing the route, and the relative cost of a primary and overflow path called path cost ratio. An optimality condition that relates the effect of traffic statistics to the path cost ratio is analytically derived and tested. Cost-effectiveness of a Hybrid Node is compared among different switching fabric architecture that is used to construct the Hybrid Node. Broadcast-Select, Benes and Clos architectures are each considered with different degrees of chip integration. An example Hybrid Network that consists of several Hybrid Routes and Hybrid Nodes is found to be cost-effective and dependent of the ratio of switching to transport costs

    Simulation and analysis of adaptive routing and flow control in wide area communication networks

    This thesis presents the development of new simulation and analytic models for the performance analysis of wide area communication networks. The models are used to analyse adaptive routing and flow control in fully connected circuit switched and sparsely connected packet switched networks. In particular the performance of routing algorithms derived from the L(_R-I) linear learning automata model are assessed for both types of network. A novel architecture using the INMOS Transputer is constructed for simulation of both circuit and packet switched networks in a loosely coupled multi- microprocessor environment. The network topology is mapped onto an identically configured array of processing centres to overcome the processing bottleneck of conventional Von Neumann architecture machines. Previous analytic work in circuit switched work is extended to include both asymmetrical networks and adaptive routing policies. In the analysis of packet switched networks analytic models of adaptive routing and flow control are integrated to produce a powerful, integrated environment for performance analysis The work concludes that routing algorithms based on linear learning automata have significant potential in both fully connected circuit switched networks and sparsely connected packet switched networks

    A Slotted Ring Test Bed for the Study of ATM Network Congestion Management

    This thesis addresses issues raised by the proposed Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network which will provide a flexible combination of integrated services traffic through its cell-based Asynchronbus Transport Mode (ATM). The introduction of a cell-based, connection-oriented, transport mode brings with it new technical challenges for network management. The routing of cells, their service at switching centres, and problems of cell congestion not encountered in the existing network, are some of the key issues. The thesis describes the development of a hardware slotted ring testbed for the investigation of congestion management in an ATM network. The testbed is designed to incorporate a modified form of the ORWELL protocol to control media access. The media access protocol is analysed to give a model for maximum throughput and reset interval under various traffic distributions. The results from the models are compared with measurements carried out on the testbed, where cell arrival statistics are also varied. It is shown that the maximum throughput of the testbed is dependent on both traffic distribution and cell arrival statistics. The testbed is used for investigations in a heterogeneous traffic environment where two classes of traffic with different cell arrival statistics and quality of service requirements are defined. The effect of prioritisation, media access protocol, traffic intensity, and traffic source statistics were investigated by determining an Admissible Load Region (ALR) for a network station. Conclusions drawn from this work suggest that there are many problems associated with the reliable definition of an ALR because of the number of variable parameters which could shift the ALR boundary. A suggested direction for further work is to explore bandwidth reservation and the concept of equivalent capacity of a connection, and how this can be linked to source control parameters

    Improving Software Project Health Using Machine Learning

    In recent years, systems that would previously live on different platforms have been integrated under a single umbrella. The increased use of GitHub, which offers pull-requests, issue trackingand version history, and its integration with other solutions such as Gerrit, or Travis, as well as theresponse from competitors, created development environments that favour agile methodologiesby increasingly automating non-coding tasks: automated build systems, automated issue triagingetc. In essence, source-code hosting platforms shifted to continuous integration/continuousdelivery (CI/CD) as a service. This facilitated a shift in development paradigms, adherents ofagile methodology can now adopt a CI/CD infrastructure more easily. This has also created large,publicly accessible sources of source-code together with related project artefacts: GHTorrent andsimilar datasets now offer programmatic access to the whole of GitHub. Project health encompasses traceability, documentation, adherence to coding conventions,tasks that reduce maintenance costs and increase accountability, but may not directly impactfeatures. Overfocus on health can slow velocity (new feature delivery) so the Agile Manifestosuggests developers should travel light — forgo tasks focused on a project health in favourof higher feature velocity. Obviously, injudiciously following this suggestion can undermine aproject’s chances for success. Simultaneously, this shift to CI/CD has allowed the proliferation of Natural Language orNatural Language and Formal Language textual artefacts that are programmatically accessible:GitHub and their competitors allow API access to their infrastructure to enable the creation ofCI/CD bots. This suggests that approaches from Natural Language Processing and MachineLearning are now feasible and indeed desirable. This thesis aims to (semi-)automate tasks forthis new paradigm and its attendant infrastructure by bringing to the foreground the relevant NLPand ML techniques. Under this umbrella, I focus on three synergistic tasks from this domain: (1) improving theissue-pull-request traceability, which can aid existing systems to automatically curate the issuebacklog as pull-requests are merged; (2) untangling commits in a version history, which canaid the beforementioned traceability task as well as improve the usability of determining a faultintroducing commit, or cherry-picking via tools such as git bisect; (3) mixed-text parsing, to allowbetter API mining and open new avenues for project-specific code-recommendation tools

    Self-Similarity in a multi-stage queueing ATM switch fabric

    Recent studies of digital network traffic have shown that arrival processes in such an environment are more accurately modeled as a statistically self-similar process, rather than as a Poisson-based one. We present a simulation of a combination sharedoutput queueing ATM switch fabric, sourced by two models of self-similar input. The effect of self-similarity on the average queue length and cell loss probability for this multi-stage queue is examined for varying load, buffer size, and internal speedup. The results using two self-similar input models, Pareto-distributed interarrival times and a Poisson-Zeta ON-OFF model, are compared with each other and with results using Poisson interarrival times and an ON-OFF bursty traffic source with Ge ometrically distributed burst lengths. The results show that at a high utilization and at a high degree of self-similarity, switch performance improves slowly with increasing buffer size and speedup, as compared to the improvement using Poisson-based traffic
