Agricultural techniques have been improved over the centuries to match with the growing demand of an increase in global population. Farming applications are facing new challenges to satisfy global needs and the recent technology advancements in terms of robotic platforms can be exploited. As the orchard management is one of the most challenging applications because of its tree structure and the required interaction with the environment, it was targeted also by the University of Bologna research group to provide a customized solution addressing new concept for agricultural vehicles. The result of this research has blossomed into a new lightweight tracked vehicle capable of performing autonomous navigation both in the open-filed scenario and while travelling inside orchards for what has been called in-row navigation. The mechanical design concept, together with customized software implementation has been detailed to highlight the strengths of the platform and some further improvements envisioned to improve the overall performances. Static stability testing has proved that the vehicle can withstand steep slopes scenarios. Some improvements have also been investigated to refine the estimation of the slippage that occurs during turning maneuvers and that is typical of skid-steering tracked vehicles. The software architecture has been implemented using the Robot Operating System (ROS) framework, so to exploit community available packages related to common and basic functions, such as sensor interfaces, while allowing dedicated custom implementation of the navigation algorithm developed. Real-world testing inside the university’s experimental orchards have proven the robustness and stability of the solution with more than 800 hours of fieldwork. The vehicle has also enabled a wide range of autonomous tasks such as spraying, mowing, and on-the-field data collection capabilities. The latter can be exploited to automatically estimate relevant orchard properties such as fruit counting and sizing, canopy properties estimation, and autonomous fruit harvesting with post-harvesting estimations.

NOvA is a two-detector long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. It consists of a Near and Far Detector, which sit 1 km and 810 km, respectively, from the source of the NuMI neutrino beam. Both detectors sit 14 mrad off-axis, resulting in a beam of neutrinos with energy narrowly peaked around 2 GeV. This thesis describes a cross-section analysis done at the Near Detector. A cross- section measurement was made for νμ charged-current interactions with a single charged pion in the final state. This measurement, the first of its kind in the NOvA Near Detector, is flux integrated and reported in bins of pion angle. The measurement was made using 13.8 × 1020 protons on target of neutrino beam, collected between 2014 and 2020. This measurement is sensitive to the transition region between the quasi-elastic and deep inelastic scattering regimes of neutrino-nucleus interactions

    Constitutions of Value

Gathering an interdisciplinary range of cutting-edge scholars, this book addresses legal constitutions of value. Global value production and transnational value practices that rely on exploitation and extraction have left us with toxic commons and a damaged planet. Against this situation, the book examines law’s fundamental role in institutions of value production and valuation. Utilising pathbreaking theoretical approaches, it problematizes mainstream efforts to redeem institutions of value production by recoupling them with progressive values. Aiming beyond radical critique, the book opens up the possibility of imagining and enacting new and different value practices. This wide-ranging and accessible book will appeal to international lawyers, socio-legal scholars, those working at the intersections of law and economy and others, in politics, economics, environmental studies and elsewhere, who are concerned with rethinking our current ideas of what has value, what does not, and whether and how value may be revalued

A prerequisite for increasing the autonomy of forest machinery is to provide robots with digital situational awareness, including a representation of the surrounding environment and the robot's own state in it. Therefore, this article-based dissertation proposes perception systems for autonomous or semi-autonomous forest machinery as a summary of seven publications. The work consists of several perception methods using machine vision, lidar, inertial sensors, and positioning sensors. The sensors are used together by means of probabilistic sensor fusion. Semi-autonomy is interpreted as a useful intermediary step, situated between current mechanized solutions and full autonomy, to assist the operator. In this work, the perception of the robot's self is achieved through estimation of its orientation and position in the world, the posture of its crane, and the pose of the attached tool. The view around the forest machine is produced with a rotating lidar, which provides approximately equal-density 3D measurements in all directions. Furthermore, a machine vision camera is used for detecting young trees among other vegetation, and sensor fusion of an actuated lidar and machine vision camera is utilized for detection and classification of tree species. In addition, in an operator-controlled semi-autonomous system, the operator requires a functional view of the data around the robot. To achieve this, the thesis proposes the use of an augmented reality interface, which requires measuring the pose of the operator's head-mounted display in the forest machine cabin. Here, this work adopts a sensor fusion solution for a head-mounted camera and inertial sensors. In order to increase the level of automation and productivity of forest machines, the work focuses on scientifically novel solutions that are also adaptable for industrial use in forest machinery. Therefore, all the proposed perception methods seek to address a real existing problem within current forest machinery. All the proposed solutions are implemented in a prototype forest machine and field tested in a forest. The proposed methods include posture measurement of a forestry crane, positioning of a freely hanging forestry crane attachment, attitude estimation of an all-terrain vehicle, positioning a head mounted camera in a forest machine cabin, detection of young trees for point cleaning, classification of tree species, and measurement of surrounding tree stems and the ground surface underneath.

Mixture-Based Clustering and Hidden Markov Models for Energy Management and Human Activity Recognition: Novel Approaches and Explainable Applications

    Get PDF
In recent times, the rapid growth of data in various fields of life has created an immense need for powerful tools to extract useful information from data. This has motivated researchers to explore and devise new ideas and methods in the field of machine learning. Mixture models have gained substantial attention due to their ability to handle high-dimensional data efficiently and effectively. However, when adopting mixture models in such spaces, four crucial issues must be addressed, including the selection of probability density functions, estimation of mixture parameters, automatic determination of the number of components, identification of features that best discriminate the different components, and taking into account the temporal information. The primary objective of this thesis is to propose a unified model that addresses these interrelated problems. Moreover, this thesis proposes a novel approach that incorporates explainability. This thesis presents innovative mixture-based modelling approaches tailored for diverse applications, such as household energy consumption characterization, energy demand management, fault detection and diagnosis and human activity recognition. The primary contributions of this thesis encompass the following aspects: Initially, we propose an unsupervised feature selection approach embedded within a finite bounded asymmetric generalized Gaussian mixture model. This model is adept at handling synthetic and real-life smart meter data, utilizing three distinct feature extraction methods. By employing the expectation-maximization algorithm in conjunction with the minimum message length criterion, we are able to concurrently estimate the model parameters, perform model selection, and execute feature selection. This unified optimization process facilitates the identification of household electricity consumption profiles along with the optimal subset of attributes defining each profile. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of household characteristics on electricity usage patterns to pinpoint households that are ideal candidates for demand reduction initiatives. Subsequently, we introduce a semi-supervised learning approach for the mixture of mixtures of bounded asymmetric generalized Gaussian and uniform distributions. The integration of the uniform distribution within the inner mixture bolsters the model's resilience to outliers. In the unsupervised learning approach, the minimum message length criterion is utilized to ascertain the optimal number of mixture components. The proposed models are validated through a range of applications, including chiller fault detection and diagnosis, occupancy estimation, and energy consumption characterization. Additionally, we incorporate explainability into our models and establish a moderate trade-off between prediction accuracy and interpretability. Finally, we devise four novel models for human activity recognition (HAR): bounded asymmetric generalized Gaussian mixture-based hidden Markov model with feature selection~(BAGGM-FSHMM), bounded asymmetric generalized Gaussian mixture-based hidden Markov model~(BAGGM-HMM), asymmetric generalized Gaussian mixture-based hidden Markov model with feature selection~(AGGM-FSHMM), and asymmetric generalized Gaussian mixture-based hidden Markov model~(AGGM-HMM). We develop an innovative method for simultaneous estimation of feature saliencies and model parameters in BAGGM-FSHMM and AGGM-FSHMM while integrating the bounded support asymmetric generalized Gaussian distribution~(BAGGD), the asymmetric generalized Gaussian distribution~(AGGD) in the BAGGM-HMM and AGGM-HMM respectively. The aforementioned proposed models are validated using video-based and sensor-based HAR applications, showcasing their superiority over several mixture-based hidden Markov models~(HMMs) across various performance metrics. We demonstrate that the independent incorporation of feature selection and bounded support distribution in a HAR system yields benefits; Simultaneously, combining both concepts results in the most effective model among the proposed models
