    Capacity configuration method of flexible smart traction power supply system based on double-layer optimization

    The flexible smart traction power supply system (FSTPSS) is a new type of traction power supply system including converters, energy storage devices and renewable energies. The capacities of the multiple components in FSTPSS have a significant impact on the economic operation and stable operation. And the capacity configuration optimization requires to consider both the daily operation costs and long-term investment recycle, which has not been fully studied. Based on the characteristics of FSTPSS, this paper proposes a double-layered capacity configuration optimization method by integrating artificial fish swarm algorithm and CPLEX solver. The main goal of this method is to obtain the maximum economic benefits in the whole life cycle. Meanwhile, the operation time of FSTPSS when facing grid outage is also considered. The simulation results show that compared with benchmark, the final converged maximum benefit value has increased by 43.6%, the grid power is averaged cut by 2.26%, the sum of daily cycle number of the energy storage devices increased by 27.3%. In addition, the proposed method can also improve the probability that train can drive out of the current power supply interval in the event of grid outage. By using the proposed method, this probability is increased by 9.27%

    Chance-constrained optimization of storage and PFC capacity for railway electrical smart grids considering uncertain traction load

    To foster the utilization of regeneration braking energy and suppress voltage unbalance (VU), a railway electrical smart grid (RESG), intergraded with power flow controller (PFC) and energy storage (ES), is proposed as an important part of next-generation electrified railways. However, under the uncertain traction load, how to design the optimal size of PFC-ES is a challenge during the planning period. Hence, this paper proposes a chance-constrained two-stage programming approach. The first-stage aims to minimising the overall cost of RESG’s devices. The second-stage aims to arrange the energy flow of the PFC-ES with the objective of minimising the expected operation cost under the dynamic VU restriction, and the stochastics characteristics of traction load are transformed into a chance constraint by using a scenario approach. Then, traction power predictions are combined with multivariate Gaussian Mixture Model (multi-GMM) model to generate correlated traction power flow scenarios and to assess VU probabilistic metrics distribution with different confidence levels. Finally, a novel algorithm is designed to select the confidence level and violation probability so that the capacity planning results can ensure the high-efficient and high-quality operation of the RESG. Case studies based on an actual electrified railway demonstrate that the proposed PFC-ES sizing approach can reduce the overall cost by up to 13%

    Forecasting Nigeria\u27s Electricity Demand and Energy Efficiency Potential Under Climate Uncertainty

    The increasing population and socio-economic growth of Nigeria, coupled with the current, unmet electricity demand, requires the need for power supply facilities expansion. Of all Nigeria’s electricity consumption by sector, the residential sector is the largest and growing at a very fast rate. To meet this growing demand, an accurate estimation of the demand into the future that will guide policy makers to adequately plan for the expansion of electricity supply and distribution, and energy efficiency standards and labeling must be made. To achieve this, a residential electricity demand forecast model that can correctly predict future demand and guide the construction of power plants including cost optimization of building these power infrastructures is needed. Modelling electricity demand in developing countries is problematic because of scarcity of data and methodologies that adequately consider detailed disaggregation of household appliances, energy efficiency improvements, and stock uptakes. This dissertation addresses these gaps and presents methodologies that can carry out a detailed disaggregation of household appliances, a more accurate electricity demand projection, peak load reduction, energy savings, economic, and environmental benefits of energy efficiency in the residential sector of Nigeria. This study adopts a bottom-up and top-down approach (hybrid) supplemented with hourly end-use demand profile to model residential electricity consumption. and project efficiency improvement through the introduction of energy efficiency standards and labelling (EE S&L) under two scenarios (Business As Usual and Best Available Technology). A consumer life-cycle cost analysis was also conducted to determine the cost-effectiveness of introducing EE S& L to consumers. The results show significant savings in energy and carbon emissions, increased cooling demand due to climate uncertainty, and negative return on investment and increase lifecycle costs to consumers who purchase more efficient appliances. These results are subject to some level of uncertainties that are mainly caused by the input data. The uncertainties were analyzed based on a Monte Carlo Simulation. The uncertainties that were considered including the type of distributions applied to them were outlined and the result of the outputs were presented

    Smart operation of transformers for sustainable electric vehicles integration and model predictive control for energy monitoring and management

    The energy transmission and distribution systems existing today are stillsignificantly dependent on transformers,despite beingmore efficient and sustainable than those of decadesago. However, a large numberof power transformers alongwith other infrastructures have been in service for decades and are considered to be in their final ageing stage. Anymalfunction in the transformerscouldaffect the reliability of the entire electric network and alsohave greateconomic impact on the system.Concernsregardingurban air pollution, climate change, and the dependence on unstable and expensive supplies of fossil fuels have lead policy makers and researchers to explore alternatives to conventional fossil-fuelled internal combustion engine vehicles. One such alternative is the introduction of electric vehicles. A broad implementation of such mean of transportation could signify a drastic reduction in greenhouse gases emissions and could consequently form a compelling argument for the global efforts of meeting the emission reduction targets. In this thesis the topic of a high penetration of electric vehicles and their possible integration in insular networksis discussed. Subsequently, smart grid solutions with enabling technologies such as energy management systems and smart meters promote the vision of smart households, which also allows for active demand side in the residential sector.However, shifting loads simultaneously to lower price periods is likely to put extra stress on distribution system assets such as distribution transformers. Especially, additional new types of loads/appliances such as electric vehicles can introduce even more uncertaintyon the operation of these assets, which is an issue that needs special attention. Additionally, in order to improve the energy consumption efficiencyin a household, home energy management systems are alsoaddressed.     Automated damage diagnosis of concrete jack arch beam using optimized deep stacked autoencoders and multi-sensor fusion

    A novel hybrid framework of optimized deep learning models combined with multi-sensor fusion is developed for condition diagnosis of concrete arch beam. The vibration responses of structure are first processed by principal component analysis for dimensionality reduction and noise elimination. Then, the deep network based on stacked autoencoders (SAE) is established at each sensor for initial condition diagnosis, where extracted principal components and corresponding condition categories are inputs and output, respectively. To enhance diagnostic accuracy of proposed deep SAE, an enhanced whale optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize network meta-parameters. Eventually, Dempster-Shafer fusion algorithm is employed to combine initial diagnosis results from each sensor to make a final diagnosis. A miniature structural component of Sydney Harbour Bridge with artificial multiple progressive damages is tested in laboratory. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can detect structural damage accurately, even under the condition of limited sensors and high levels of uncertainties
