Energy efficiency in discrete-manufacturing systems: insights, trends, and control strategies
Since the depletion of fossil energy sources, rising energy prices, and governmental regulation restrictions, the current manufacturing industry is shifting towards more efficient and sustainable systems. This transformation has promoted the identification of energy saving opportunities and the development of new technologies and strategies oriented to improve the energy efficiency of such systems. This paper outlines and discusses most of the research reported during the last decade regarding energy efficiency in manufacturing systems, the current technologies and strategies to improve that efficiency, identifying and remarking those related to the design of management/control strategies. Based on this fact, this paper aims to provide a review of strategies for reducing energy consumption and optimizing the use of resources within a plant into the context of discrete manufacturing. The review performed concerning the current context of manufacturing systems, control systems implemented, and their transformation towards Industry 4.0 might be useful in both the academic and industrial dimension to identify trends and critical points and suggest further research lines.Peer ReviewedPreprin
Existing and Required Modeling Capabilities for Evaluating ATM Systems and Concepts
ATM systems throughout the world are entering a period of major transition and change. The combination of important technological developments and of the globalization of the air transportation industry has necessitated a reexamination of some of the fundamental premises of existing Air Traffic Management (ATM) concepts. New ATM concepts have to be examined, concepts that may place more emphasis on: strategic traffic management; planning and control; partial decentralization of decision-making; and added reliance on the aircraft to carry out strategic ATM plans, with ground controllers confined primarily to a monitoring and supervisory role. 'Free Flight' is a case in point. In order to study, evaluate and validate such new concepts, the ATM community will have to rely heavily on models and computer-based tools/utilities, covering a wide range of issues and metrics related to safety, capacity and efficiency. The state of the art in such modeling support is adequate in some respects, but clearly deficient in others. It is the objective of this study to assist in: (1) assessing the strengths and weaknesses of existing fast-time models and tools for the study of ATM systems and concepts and (2) identifying and prioritizing the requirements for the development of additional modeling capabilities in the near future. A three-stage process has been followed to this purpose: 1. Through the analysis of two case studies involving future ATM system scenarios, as well as through expert assessment, modeling capabilities and supporting tools needed for testing and validating future ATM systems and concepts were identified and described. 2. Existing fast-time ATM models and support tools were reviewed and assessed with regard to the degree to which they offer the capabilities identified under Step 1. 3 . The findings of 1 and 2 were combined to draw conclusions about (1) the best capabilities currently existing, (2) the types of concept testing and validation that can be carried out reliably with such existing capabilities and (3) the currently unavailable modeling capabilities that should receive high priority for near-term research and development. It should be emphasized that the study is concerned only with the class of 'fast time' analytical and simulation models. 'Real time' models, that typically involve humans-in-the-loop, comprise another extensive class which is not addressed in this report. However, the relationship between some of the fast-time models reviewed and a few well-known real-time models is identified in several parts of this report and the potential benefits from the combined use of these two classes of models-a very important subject-are discussed in chapters 4 and 7
Evaluating Resilience of Cyber-Physical-Social Systems
Nowadays, protecting the network is not the only security concern. Still, in cyber security,
websites and servers are becoming more popular as targets due to the ease with which
they can be accessed when compared to communication networks. Another threat in
cyber physical social systems with human interactions is that they can be attacked and
manipulated not only by technical hacking through networks, but also by manipulating
people and stealing users’ credentials. Therefore, systems should be evaluated beyond cy-
ber security, which means measuring their resilience as a piece of evidence that a system
works properly under cyber-attacks or incidents. In that way, cyber resilience is increas-
ingly discussed and described as the capacity of a system to maintain state awareness for
detecting cyber-attacks. All the tasks for making a system resilient should proactively
maintain a safe level of operational normalcy through rapid system reconfiguration to
detect attacks that would impact system performance. In this work, we broadly studied
a new paradigm of cyber physical social systems and defined a uniform definition of it.
To overcome the complexity of evaluating cyber resilience, especially in these inhomo-
geneous systems, we proposed a framework including applying Attack Tree refinements
and Hierarchical Timed Coloured Petri Nets to model intruder and defender behaviors
and evaluate the impact of each action on the behavior and performance of the system.Hoje em dia, proteger a rede não é a única preocupação de segurança. Ainda assim, na
segurança cibernética, sites e servidores estão se tornando mais populares como alvos
devido à facilidade com que podem ser acessados quando comparados às redes de comu-
nicação. Outra ameaça em sistemas sociais ciberfisicos com interações humanas é que eles
podem ser atacados e manipulados não apenas por hackers técnicos através de redes, mas
também pela manipulação de pessoas e roubo de credenciais de utilizadores. Portanto, os
sistemas devem ser avaliados para além da segurança cibernética, o que significa medir
sua resiliência como uma evidência de que um sistema funciona adequadamente sob
ataques ou incidentes cibernéticos. Dessa forma, a resiliência cibernética é cada vez mais
discutida e descrita como a capacidade de um sistema manter a consciência do estado para
detectar ataques cibernéticos. Todas as tarefas para tornar um sistema resiliente devem
manter proativamente um nível seguro de normalidade operacional por meio da reconfi-
guração rápida do sistema para detectar ataques que afetariam o desempenho do sistema.
Neste trabalho, um novo paradigma de sistemas sociais ciberfisicos é amplamente estu-
dado e uma definição uniforme é proposta. Para superar a complexidade de avaliar a
resiliência cibernética, especialmente nesses sistemas não homogéneos, é proposta uma
estrutura que inclui a aplicação de refinamentos de Árvores de Ataque e Redes de Petri
Coloridas Temporizadas Hierárquicas para modelar comportamentos de invasores e de-
fensores e avaliar o impacto de cada ação no comportamento e desempenho do sistema
Applied novel software development methodology for process engineering application
Chemical processes are nonlinear continuous/discrete dynamic systems that are subject to considerable uncertainties and variations during their design and operation. These systems are designed to operate at an economically optimal steady-state. However, minor changes in process parameters’ values might cause deviations and elicit dynamic responses from processes. Controllability—defined as the ability of holding a process within a specified operating regime and the controllability assessment of each given process system—should be taken into account during the system design phase. This emphasises the necessity of effective software tools that could assist process engineers in their controllability evaluation.
Although there are few multipurpose tools available for this task, developing software tools for controllability analysis is a tedious and sophisticated undertaking. It involves elaboration from multiple disciplines, and the requirements of controllability assessments are so vast that it is almost impossible to create general software that covers all controllability measures and cases.
This thesis aims to systematically tackle the challenge of developing practical and high-quality software tools for controllability problems while reducing the required time and effort, regardless of the size and scale of the controllability problem.
Domain-specific language (DSL) methodology is proposed for this purpose. DSLs are programming languages designed to address the programming problems of a specific domain. Therefore, well-designed DSLs are simple, easy to use and capable of solving any problem defined in their domains. Based on DSL methodology, this study proposes a four-element framework to partition the software system into decoupled elements, and discusses the design and implementation steps of each element as well as communication between elements. The superiority of the developed methodology based on DSL is compared with traditional programming techniques for controllability assessment of various case studies.
Essentially, the major advantage of the proposed methodology is the performance of the software product. Performance measures used in this study are total time to develop (TD) the software tool and its modifiability. Total time and effort to implement and use the result products presents up to five times improvement. Moreover, the result product’s modifiability is assessed by applying modifications, which also demonstrates up to five times improvement. All measures are tested on continuous stirred-tank reaction (CSTR) and forced-circulation evaporator (FCE) case studies.
In conclusion, this study significantly contributes to two fields. The first is DSL, since this thesis studies different types of DSLs and evaluates their applications in the controllability analysis. The second is the controllability evaluation, since this study examines a new methodology for software development in controllability assessment
Modelling polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells for dynamic reliability assessment
Tackling climate change is arguably the biggest challenge humanity faces in the 21st century. Rising average global temperatures threaten to destabilize the fragile ecosystem of the Earth and bring unprecedented changes to human lives if nothing is done to prevent it. This phenomenon is caused by the anthropogenic greenhouse effect due to the increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2). One way to avert the disaster is to drastically reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in all spheres of human activities, including transportation. To do this, research and development of electric vehicles (EVs) to make them more efficient, reliable and accessible is essential. [Continues.
Survivability modeling for cyber-physical systems subject to data corruption
Cyber-physical critical infrastructures are created when traditional physical infrastructure is supplemented with advanced monitoring, control, computing, and communication capability. More intelligent decision support and improved efficacy, dependability, and security are expected. Quantitative models and evaluation methods are required for determining the extent to which a cyber-physical infrastructure improves on its physical predecessors. It is essential that these models reflect both cyber and physical aspects of operation and failure. In this dissertation, we propose quantitative models for dependability attributes, in particular, survivability, of cyber-physical systems. Any malfunction or security breach, whether cyber or physical, that causes the system operation to depart from specifications will affect these dependability attributes. Our focus is on data corruption, which compromises decision support -- the fundamental role played by cyber infrastructure. The first research contribution of this work is a Petri net model for information exchange in cyber-physical systems, which facilitates i) evaluation of the extent of data corruption at a given time, and ii) illuminates the service degradation caused by propagation of corrupt data through the cyber infrastructure. In the second research contribution, we propose metrics and an evaluation method for survivability, which captures the extent of functionality retained by a system after a disruptive event. We illustrate the application of our methods through case studies on smart grids, intelligent water distribution networks, and intelligent transportation systems. Data, cyber infrastructure, and intelligent control are part and parcel of nearly every critical infrastructure that underpins daily life in developed countries. Our work provides means for quantifying and predicting the service degradation caused when cyber infrastructure fails to serve its intended purpose. Modeling and Evaluating Pilot Performance in NextGen: Review of and Recommendations Regarding Pilot Modeling Efforts, Architectures, and Validation Studies
NextGen operations are associated with a variety of changes to the national airspace system (NAS) including changes to the allocation of roles and responsibilities among operators and automation, the use of new technologies and automation, additional information presented on the flight deck, and the entire concept of operations (ConOps). In the transition to NextGen airspace, aviation and air operations designers need to consider the implications of design or system changes on human performance and the potential for error. To ensure continued safety of the NAS, it will be necessary for researchers to evaluate design concepts and potential NextGen scenarios well before implementation. One approach for such evaluations is through human performance modeling. Human performance models (HPMs) provide effective tools for predicting and evaluating operator performance in systems. HPMs offer significant advantages over empirical, human-in-the-loop testing in that (1) they allow detailed analyses of systems that have not yet been built, (2) they offer great flexibility for extensive data collection, (3) they do not require experimental participants, and thus can offer cost and time savings. HPMs differ in their ability to predict performance and safety with NextGen procedures, equipment and ConOps. Models also vary in terms of how they approach human performance (e.g., some focus on cognitive processing, others focus on discrete tasks performed by a human, while others consider perceptual processes), and in terms of their associated validation efforts. The objectives of this research effort were to support the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in identifying HPMs that are appropriate for predicting pilot performance in NextGen operations, to provide guidance on how to evaluate the quality of different models, and to identify gaps in pilot performance modeling research, that could guide future research opportunities.
