Multi-radio over fiber architecture for road vehicle communication in VANETs
Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) are employing heterogeneous technologies now a days to meet the increasing demands of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) applications such as enriched multimedia, video conferencing, gaming and online collaboration. Deployment and maintenance cost for infrastructures are also a major concern. This work proposes a framework, capable of catering multiple technologies simultaneously (such as local area network, wide area networks and cellular networks), that deploys wired and wireless integrated technologies to exploit the advantages of both. Therefore, it offers the architecture based on radio over fiber technology to meet the future requirements of high data rate for Road Vehicle Communication (RVC) in VANETs and it comes up with the most important and perhaps desperately needed feature of âFuture Technology Supportâ yielding very high data rates support. Several traditionally deployed architectures are striving to come up with the future needs but due to their various limitations they were unable to attain their expected outcomes. The proposed RoF based architecture justifies its need inducing a true value and powerful features to dramatically enhance the overall performance of the entire system. Several evaluation parameters have been chosen that clearly present the strength of proposed RoF framework and prove that RoF framework is the better option for the service providers in the area of ITS applications
Improving quality of service through road side back-bone network in VANET
The vehicular ad hoc Networks (VANETs) are expected to support a large spectrum of traffic alert, dynamic route planning, file sharing, safety and infotainment applications to improve traffic management. User satisfaction plus in time delivery of real-time messages is the most significant quality evaluation criterion for vehicular applications. High mobility and rapidly changing topologies always lead to intermittent quality of services, higher delay and packet dropping issues in network. To improve the quality of services for multi-hop and dynamic environment, different types of solutions have been proposed. The article introduces multi-protocol label switching based on roadside backbone network to provide widespread, scalable, high-speed, robust quality of services and improve network efficiency. The simulation results showed that proposed model improves data transmission and routing performance in terms of data delivery, throughput, end-to-end delay and achieve adequate utilization of resources
Advancement in infotainment system in automotive sector with vehicular cloud network and current state of art
The automotive industry has been incorporating various technological advancement on top-end versions of the vehicle order to improvise the degree of comfortability as well as enhancing the safer driving system. Infotainment system is one such pivotal system which not only makes the vehicle smart but also offers abundance of information as well as entertainment to the driver and passenger. The capability to offer extensive relay of service through infotainment system is highly dependent on vehicular adhoc network as well as back end support of cloud environment. However, it is know that such legacy system of vehicular adhoc network is also characterized by various problems associated with channel capacity, latency, heterogeneous network processing, and many more. Therefore, this paper offers a comprehensive insight to the research work being carried out towards leveraging the infotainment system in order to obtain the true picture of strength, limitation, and open end problems associated with infotainment system
Vehicle classification in intelligent transport systems: an overview, methods and software perspective
Vehicle Classification (VC) is a key element of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Diverse ranges of ITS applications like security systems, surveillance frameworks, fleet monitoring, traffic safety, and automated parking are using VC. Basically, in the current VC methods, vehicles are classified locally as a vehicle passes through a monitoring area, by fixed sensors or using a compound method. This paper presents a pervasive study on the state of the art of VC methods. We introduce a detailed VC taxonomy and explore the different kinds of traffic information that can be extracted via each method. Subsequently, traditional and cutting edge VC systems are investigated from different aspects. Specifically, strengths and shortcomings of the existing VC methods are discussed and real-time alternatives like Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) are investigated to convey physical as well as kinematic characteristics of the vehicles. Finally, we review a broad range of soft computing solutions involved in VC in the context of machine learning, neural networks, miscellaneous features, models and other methods

Hierarchical wireless framework for real-time collaborative generation and distribution of telemetry data
This project introduces a novel multidisciplinary approach combining Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks and Granular Computing, to the data processing and information generation problem in large urban traffic systems. It addresses the challenge of realtime information generation and dissemination in such systems by designing and investigating a hierarchical real-time information framework. The research work is complemented by designing and developing a simulator for such a system, which provides a simulation environment for the model developed. The proposed multidisciplinary hierarchical real-time information processing and dissemination system framework utilises results from two different areas of study, which are Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETS) and Granular Computing concepts. Furthermore, a new geographically constrained VANET topology for information generation is proposed, simulated and investigated
Vehicle as a Service (VaaS): Leverage Vehicles to Build Service Networks and Capabilities for Smart Cities
Smart cities demand resources for rich immersive sensing, ubiquitous
communications, powerful computing, large storage, and high intelligence
(SCCSI) to support various kinds of applications, such as public safety,
connected and autonomous driving, smart and connected health, and smart living.
At the same time, it is widely recognized that vehicles such as autonomous
cars, equipped with significantly powerful SCCSI capabilities, will become
ubiquitous in future smart cities. By observing the convergence of these two
trends, this article advocates the use of vehicles to build a cost-effective
service network, called the Vehicle as a Service (VaaS) paradigm, where
vehicles empowered with SCCSI capability form a web of mobile servers and
communicators to provide SCCSI services in smart cities. Towards this
direction, we first examine the potential use cases in smart cities and
possible upgrades required for the transition from traditional vehicular ad hoc
networks (VANETs) to VaaS. Then, we will introduce the system architecture of
the VaaS paradigm and discuss how it can provide SCCSI services in future smart
cities, respectively. At last, we identify the open problems of this paradigm
and future research directions, including architectural design, service
provisioning, incentive design, and security & privacy. We expect that this
paper paves the way towards developing a cost-effective and sustainable

Reputation systems and secure communication in vehicular networks
A thorough review of the state of the art will reveal that most VANET applications rely on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), which uses user certificates managed by a Certification Authority (CA) to handle security. By doing so, they constrain the ad-hoc nature of the VANET imposing a frequent connection to the CA to retrieve the Certificate Revocation List (CRL) and requiring some degree of roadside infrastructure to achieve that connection. Other solutions propose the usage of group signatures where users organize in groups and elect a group manager. The group manager will need to ensure that group members do not misbehave, i.e., do not spread false information, and if they do punish them, evict them from the group and report them to the
CA; thus suffering from the same CRL retrieval problem.
In this thesis we present a fourfold contribution to improve security in VANETs. First and foremost, Chains of Trust describes a reputation system where users disseminate Points of Interest (POIs) information over the network while their privacy remains protected. It uses asymmetric cryptography and users are responsible for the generation of their own pair of public and
private keys. There is no central entity which stores the information users input into the system; instead, that information is kept distributed among the vehicles that make up the network. On top of that, this system requires no roadside infrastructure. Precisely, our main objective with Chains of Trust was to show that just by relying on peopleÂżs driving habits and the sporadic nature of their encounters with other drivers a successful reputation system could be built.
The second contribution of this thesis is the application simulator poiSim. ManyÂżs the time a new VANET application is presented and its authors back their findings using simulation results from renowned networks simulators like ns-2. The major issue with network simulators is that they were not designed with that purpose in mind and handling simulations with hundreds of nodes requires a massive processing power. As a result, authors run small simulations (between 50 and 100 nodes) with vehicles that move randomly in a squared area instead of using real maps, which rend unrealistic results. We show that by building tailored application simulators we can obtain more realistic results. The application simulator poiSim processes a realistic mobility trace produced by a Multi-agent Microscopic Traffic Simulator developed at ETH Zurich, which accurately describes the mobility patterns of 259,977 vehicles over regional maps of Switzerland for 24 hours. This simulation runs on a desktop PC and lasts approximately 120 minutes.
In our third contribution we took Chains of Trust one step further in the protection of user privacy to develop Anonymous Chains of Trust. In this system users can temporarily exchange their identity with other users they trust, thus making it impossible for an attacker to know in all certainty who input a particular piece of information into the system. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time this technique has been used in a reputation system.
Finally, in our last contribution we explore a different form of communication for VANETs. The vast majority of VANET applications rely on the IEEE 802.11p/Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE) standard or some other form of radio communication. This poses a security risk if we consider how vulnerable radio transmission is to intentional jamming and
natural interferences: an attacker could easily block all radio communication in a certain area if his transmitter is powerful enough. Visual Light Communication (VLC), on the other hand, is resilient to jamming over a wide area because it relies on visible light to transmit information and ,unlike WAVE, it has no scalability problems. In this thesis we show that VLC is a secure and valuable form of communication in VANETs
