    Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization for the minimum labelling Steiner tree problem

    Particle Swarm Optimization is an evolutionary method inspired by the social behaviour of individuals inside swarms in nature. Solutions of the problem are modelled as members of the swarm which fly in the solution space. The evolution is obtained from the continuous movement of the particles that constitute the swarm submitted to the effect of the inertia and the attraction of the members who lead the swarm. This work focuses on a recent Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization for combinatorial optimization, called Jumping Particle Swarm Optimization. Its effectiveness is illustrated on the minimum labelling Steiner tree problem: given an undirected labelled connected graph, the aim is to find a spanning tree covering a given subset of nodes, whose edges have the smallest number of distinct labels

    Applying Sequential Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm to Improve Power Generation Quality

    Swarm Optimization approach is a heuristic search method whose mechanics are inspired by the swarming or collaborative behaviour of biological populations. It is used to solve constrained, unconstrained, continuous and discrete problems. Swarm intelligence systems are widely used and very effective in solving standard and large-scale optimization, provided that the problem does not require multi solutions. In this paper, particle swarm optimisation technique is used to optimise fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for stabilising a power generation and distribution network that consists of four generators. The system is subject to different types of faults (single and multi-phase). Simulation studies show that the optimised FLC performs well in stabilising the network after it recovers from a fault. The controller is compared to multi-band and standard controllers

    This study reports early research aimed at applying the powerful resource allocation mechanism deployed in Stochastic Diffusion Search (SDS) to the Particle Swarm Optimiser (PSO) metaheuristic, effectively merging the two swarm intelligence algorithms. The results reported herein suggest that the hybrid algorithm, exploiting information sharing between particles, has the potential to improve the optimisation capability of conventional PSOs

    Generalised MBER-based vector precoding design for multiuser transmission

    We propose a generalized vector precoding (VP) design based on the minimum bit error rate (MBER) criterion for multiuser transmission in the downlink of a multiuser system, where the base station (BS) equipped with multiple transmitting antennas communicates with single-receiving-antenna mobile station (MS) receivers each having a modulo device. Given the knowledge of the channel state information and the current information symbol vector to be transmitted, our scheme directly generates the effective symbol vector based on the MBER criterion using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The proposed PSO-aided generalized MBER VP scheme is shown to outperform the powerful minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) VP and improved MMSE-VP benchmarks, particularly for rank-deficient systems, where the number of BS transmitting antennas is lower than the number of MSs supported

    Population extremal optimisation for discrete multi-objective optimisation problems

    The power to solve intractable optimisation problems is often found through population based evolutionary methods. These include, but are not limited to, genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimisation, differential evolution and ant colony optimisation. While showing much promise as an effective optimiser, extremal optimisation uses only a single solution in its canonical form ā€“ and there are no standard population mechanics. In this paper, two population models for extremal optimisation are proposed and applied to a multi-objective version of the generalised assignment problem. These models use novel intervention/interaction strategies as well as collective memory in order to allow individual population members to work together. Additionally, a general non-dominated local search algorithm is developed and tested. Overall, the results show that improved attainment surfaces can be produced using population based interactions over not using them. The new EO approach is also shown to be highly competitive with an implementation of NSGA-II.No Full Tex
