Feature selection (FS) is considered to be an important preprocessing step in machine learning and pattern recognition, and feature evaluation is the key issue for constructing a feature selection algorithm. Feature selection process can also reduce noise and this way enhance the classification accuracy. In this article, feature selection method based on fuzzy similarity measures by multi objective genetic algorithm (FSFSM - MOGA) is introduced and performance of the proposed method on published data sets from UCI was evaluated. The results show the efficiency of the method is compared with the conventional version. When this method multi-objective genetic algorithms and fuzzy similarity measures used in CFS method can improve it

Fuzzy Criteria in Multi-objective Feature Selection for Unsupervised Learning

Feature selection in which most informative variables are selected for model generation is an important step in pattern recognition. Here, one often tries to optimize multiple criteria such as discriminating power of the descriptor, performance of model and cardinality of a subset. In this paper we propose a fuzzy criterion in multi-objective unsupervised feature selection by applying the hybridized filter-wrapper approach (FC-MOFS). These formulations allow for an efficient way to pick features from a pool and to avoid misunderstanding of overlapping features via crisp clustered learning in a conventional multi-objective optimization procedure. Moreover, the optimization problem is solved by using non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm, type two (NSGA-II). The performance of the proposed approach is then examined on six benchmark datasets from multiple disciplines and different numbers of features. Systematic comparisons of the proposed method and representative non-fuzzified approaches are illustrated in this work. The experimental studies show a superior performance of the proposed approach in terms of accuracy and feasibility.Algorithms and the Foundations of Software technolog

A generic optimising feature extraction method using multiobjective genetic programming

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present a generic, optimising feature extraction method using multiobjective genetic programming. We re-examine the feature extraction problem and show that effective feature extraction can significantly enhance the performance of pattern recognition systems with simple classifiers. A framework is presented to evolve optimised feature extractors that transform an input pattern space into a decision space in which maximal class separability is obtained. We have applied this method to real world datasets from the UCI Machine Learning and StatLog databases to verify our approach and compare our proposed method with other reported results. We conclude that our algorithm is able to produce classifiers of superior (or equivalent) performance to the conventional classifiers examined, suggesting removal of the need to exhaustively evaluate a large family of conventional classifiers on any new problem. Application of multiobjective genetic programming to the design of robot failure recognition systems

We present an evolutionary approach using multiobjective genetic programming (MOGP) to derive optimal feature extraction preprocessing stages for robot failure detection. This data-driven machine learning method is compared both with conventional (nonevolutionary) classifiers and a set of domain-dependent feature extraction methods. We conclude MOGP is an effective and practical design method for failure recognition systems with enhanced recognition accuracy over conventional classifiers, independent of domain knowledge

Metaheuristic design of feedforward neural networks: a review of two decades of research

    Get PDF
Over the past two decades, the feedforward neural network (FNN) optimization has been a key interest among the researchers and practitioners of multiple disciplines. The FNN optimization is often viewed from the various perspectives: the optimization of weights, network architecture, activation nodes, learning parameters, learning environment, etc. Researchers adopted such different viewpoints mainly to improve the FNN's generalization ability. The gradient-descent algorithm such as backpropagation has been widely applied to optimize the FNNs. Its success is evident from the FNN's application to numerous real-world problems. However, due to the limitations of the gradient-based optimization methods, the metaheuristic algorithms including the evolutionary algorithms, swarm intelligence, etc., are still being widely explored by the researchers aiming to obtain generalized FNN for a given problem. This article attempts to summarize a broad spectrum of FNN optimization methodologies including conventional and metaheuristic approaches. This article also tries to connect various research directions emerged out of the FNN optimization practices, such as evolving neural network (NN), cooperative coevolution NN, complex-valued NN, deep learning, extreme learning machine, quantum NN, etc. Additionally, it provides interesting research challenges for future research to cope-up with the present information processing era
