    Data-Driven Multiobjective Optimization for Burden Surface in Blast Furnace With Feedback Compensation

    In this paper, an intelligent data-driven optimization scheme is proposed for finding the proper burden surface distribution, which exerts large influences on keeping blast furnace running smoothly in an energy-efficient state. In the proposed scheme, production indicators prediction models are first developed using a kernel extreme learning machine algorithm. To heel, burden surface decision is presented as a multiobjective optimization problem for the first time and solved by a modified two-stage intelligent optimization strategy to generate the initial setting values of burden surface. Furthermore, considering the existence of the approximation error of the created prediction models, feedback compensation is implemented to enhance the reliability of the results, in which an improved association rule mining method is developed to find the corrected values to compensate the initial setting values. Finally, we apply the proposed optimization scheme to determine the setting values of burden surface using actual data, and experimental results illustrate its effectiveness and feasibility

    Pre-bcc: a novel integrated machine learning framework for predicting mechanical and durability properties of blended cement concrete

    Partially replacing ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with low-carbon supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in blended cement concrete (BCC) is perceived as the most promising route for sustainable concrete production. Despite having a lower environmental impact, BCC could exhibit performance inferior to OPC in design-governing functional properties. Hence, concrete manufacturers and scientists have been seeking methods to predict the performance of BCC mixes in order to reduce the cost and time of experimentally testing all alternatives. Machine learning algorithms have been proven in other fields for treating large amounts of data drawing meaningful relationships between data accurately. However, the existing prediction models in the literature come short in covering a wide range of SCMs and/or functional properties. Considering this, in this study, a non-linear multi-layered machine learning regression model was created to predict the performance of a BCC mix for slump, strength, and resistance to carbonation and chloride ingress based on any of five prominent SCMs: fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume, lime powder and calcined clay. A database from>150 peer-reviewed sources containing>1650 data points was created to train and test the model. The statistical performance was found to be comparable to that of existing models (R = 0.94–0.97).     A Novel Artificial Neural Network to Predict Compressive Strength of Recycled Aggregate Concrete

    Most regulations only allow the use of the coarse fraction of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) for the manufacture of new concrete, although the heterogeneity of RCA makes it difficult to predict the compressive strength of concrete, which is an obstacle to the incorporation of RCA in concrete production. The compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete is closely related to the dosage of its constituents. This article proposes a novel artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict the 28-day compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete. The ANN used in this work has 11 neurons in the input layer: the mass of cement, fly ash, water, superplasticizer, fine natural aggregate, coarse natural or recycled aggregate, and their properties, such as: sand fineness modulus of sand, water absorption capacity, saturated surface dry density of the coarse aggregate mix and the maximum particle size. Two training methods were used for the ANN combining 15 and 20 hidden layers: Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) and Bayesian Regularization (BR). A database with 177 mixes selected from 15 studies incorporating RCA were selected, with the aim of having an underlying set of data heterogeneous enough to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach, even when data are heterogeneous and noisy, which is the main finding of this work

    Challenges and Prospects of Steelmaking Towards the Year 2050

    The world steel industry is strongly based on coal/coke in ironmaking, resulting in huge carbon dioxide emissions corresponding to approximately 7% of the total anthropogenic CO2 emissions. As the world is experiencing a period of imminent threat owing to climate change, the steel industry is also facing a tremendous challenge in next decades. This themed issue makes a survey on the current situation of steel production, energy consumption, and CO2 emissions, as well as cross-sections of the potential methods to decrease CO2 emissions in current processes via improved energy and materials efficiency, increasing recycling, utilizing alternative energy sources, and adopting CO2 capture and storage. The current state, problems and plans in the two biggest steel producing countries, China and India are introduced. Generally contemplating, incremental improvements in current processes play a key role in rapid mitigation of specific emissions, but finally they are insufficient when striving for carbon neutral production in the long run. Then hydrogen and electrification are the apparent solutions also to iron and steel production. The book gives a holistic overview of the current situation and challenges, and an inclusive compilation of the potential technologies and solutions for the global CO2 emissions problem

    Particle-scale numerical study on screening processes

    The present study aimed to increase the understanding of the industrial screening process by using the discrete element method simulation (DEM) and machine learning modelling. Thus, the study focused on understanding the fundamentals of the complicated screening processes by investigating the process model with different controlling factors through particle-scale analysis. The particle-scale analysis was also linked to several macroscopic models and screening processes such as percolation of particles under vibration, the local passing of particles from the screen, choking of screening, non-spherical shaped particles contact detection and packing and machine learning modelling. The computational and theoretical analyses as well as machine leaning helped to clarify the use of particle-scale analysis and screening processes in several areas. The outcomes of this thesis include: (i) the percolation of particles under vibration and the machine learning modelling of percolation velocity to predict the size ratio threshold; (ii) a better understanding of screening process based on local passing of inclined and multi-deck screen and physics informed machine learning modelling to predict the particles passing; (iii) a logical model to predict the choking judgement of screen while combining the numerical results and machine learning and (iv) a novel contact force model for non-spherical particles by Fourier transformation and packing. The research in this thesis is useful for the fundamental understanding of the effect of particles’ contact force, operational conditions, particle properties, percolation and sieving on the screening process. Moreover, the novel process models based on artificial intelligence modelling, DEM simulation, and physics laws can help the design, control and optimisation of screening processes

    Simulating The Impact of Emissions Control on Economic Productivity Using Particle Systems and Puff Dispersion Model

    A simulation platform is developed for quantifying the change in productivity of an economy under passive and active emission control mechanisms. The program uses object-oriented programming to code a collection of objects resembling typical stakeholders in an economy. These objects include firms, markets, transportation hubs, and boids which are distributed over a 2D surface. Firms are connected using a modified Prim’s Minimum spanning tree algorithm, followed by implementation of an all-pair shortest path Floyd Warshall algorithm for navigation purposes. Firms use a non-linear production function for transformation of land, labor, and capital inputs to finished product. A GA-Vehicle Routing Problem with multiple pickups and drop-offs is implemented for efficient delivery of commodities across multiple nodes in the economy. Boids are autonomous agents which perform several functions in the economy including labor, consumption, renting, saving, and investing. Each boid is programmed with several microeconomic functions including intertemporal choice models, Hicksian and Marshallian demand function, and labor-leisure model. The simulation uses a Puff Dispersion model to simulate the advection and diffusion of emissions from point and mobile sources in the economy. A dose-response function is implemented to quantify depreciation of a Boid’s health upon contact with these emissions. The impact of emissions control on productivity and air quality is examined through a series of passive and active emission control scenarios. Passive control examines the impact of various shutdown times on economic productivity and rate of emissions exposure experienced by boids. The active control strategy examines the effects of acceptable levels of emissions exposure on economic productivity. The key findings on 7 different scenarios of passive and active emissions controls indicate that rate of productivity and consumption in an economy declines with increased scrutiny of emissions from point sources. In terms of exposure rates, the point sources may not be the primary source of average exposure rates, however they significantly impact the maximum exposure rate experienced by a boid. Tightening of emissions control also negatively impacts the transportation sector by reducing the asset utilization rate as well as reducing the total volume of goods transported across the economy
