Analysis of Neighbourhoods in Multi-layered Dynamic Social Networks
Social networks existing among employees, customers or users of various IT
systems have become one of the research areas of growing importance. A social
network consists of nodes - social entities and edges linking pairs of nodes.
In regular, one-layered social networks, two nodes - i.e. people are connected
with a single edge whereas in the multi-layered social networks, there may be
many links of different types for a pair of nodes. Nowadays data about people
and their interactions, which exists in all social media, provides information
about many different types of relationships within one network. Analysing this
data one can obtain knowledge not only about the structure and characteristics
of the network but also gain understanding about semantic of human relations.
Are they direct or not? Do people tend to sustain single or multiple relations
with a given person? What types of communication is the most important for
them? Answers to these and more questions enable us to draw conclusions about
semantic of human interactions. Unfortunately, most of the methods used for
social network analysis (SNA) may be applied only to one-layered social
networks. Thus, some new structural measures for multi-layered social networks
are proposed in the paper, in particular: cross-layer clustering coefficient,
cross-layer degree centrality and various versions of multi-layered degree
centralities. Authors also investigated the dynamics of multi-layered
neighbourhood for five different layers within the social network. The
evaluation of the presented concepts on the real-world dataset is presented.
The measures proposed in the paper may directly be used to various methods for
collective classification, in which nodes are assigned to labels according to

Influence of polymerisation conditions on the properties of polymer/clay nanocomposite hydrogels
Free-radical polymerisation of acrylamide derivatives in the presence of exfoliated clay platelets has recently emerged as a new technique for the synthesis of strong and tough nanocomposite hydrogels (NCHs) with a unique hybrid organic/inorganic network structure. The central intent of many research studies in the field of NCHs conducted so far was to change hydrogel properties with the introduction of various clays and variation of the clay content. Here, we demonstrate that the properties of NCHs significantly vary depending on initiating conditions used for hydrogel synthesis via in situ polymerisation in solutions of high monomer concentrations (above 1 mol L-1 ). A unique, complementary combination of real-time dynamic rheology and pulsed NMR/MRI has been used to study the influence of the composition of a redox initiating system on the gelation process and hydrogel properties. The molar ratio of the persulphate initiator to tertiary amine activator affects the polymerisation kinetics, morphology and mechanical properties of the hydrogels. We further show that activator-dominated systems tend to produce hydrogels with higher storage modulus and lower water intake. This trend is attributed to the increase in the cross-linking degree. From the analysis of the water state in NCH and hydrogels prepared with and without an organic cross-linker, it was concluded that clay platelets did not form covalent bonds with polymer molecules but contributed to the formation of a physical network. There is evidence of self-crosslinking of polymer chains during acrylamide polymerisation at high monomer concentration. The composition of the initiating system influences the number of formed self-crosslinks
Towards a Framework for Developing Mobile Agents for Managing Distributed Information Resources
Distributed information management tools allow users to author, disseminate, discover and manage information within large-scale networked environments, such as the Internet. Agent technology provides the flexibility and scalability necessary to develop such distributed information management applications. We present a layered organisation that is shared by the specific applications that we build. Within this organisation we describe an architecture where mobile agents can move across distributed environments, integrate with local resources and other mobile agents, and communicate their results back to the user
Three-dimensional microfabrication through a multimode optical fiber
Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, is an advanced
manufacturing technique that allows the fabrication of arbitrary macroscopic
and microscopic objects. All 3D printing systems require large optical elements
or nozzles in proximity to the built structure. This prevents their use in
applications in which there is no direct access to the area where the objects
have to be printed. Here, we demonstrate three-dimensional microfabrication
based on two-photon polymerization (TPP) with sub diffraction-limited
resolution through an ultra-thin, 50 mm long printing nozzle of 560 micrometers
in diameter. Using wavefront shaping, femtosecond infrared pulses are focused
and scanned through a multimode optical fiber (MMF) inside a photoresist that
polymerizes via two-photon absorption. We show the construction of arbitrary 3D
structures of 500 nm resolution on the other side of the fiber. To our
knowledge, this is the first demonstration of microfabrication through a
multimode optical fiber. Our work represents a new area which we refer to as
endofabrication
Sensing and mapping for interactive performance
This paper describes a trans-domain mapping (TDM) framework for translating meaningful activities from one creative domain onto another. The multi-disciplinary framework is designed to facilitate an intuitive and non-intrusive interactive multimedia performance interface that offers the users or performers real-time control of multimedia events using their physical movements. It is intended to be a highly dynamic real-time performance tool, sensing and tracking activities and changes, in order to provide interactive multimedia performances.
From a straightforward definition of the TDM framework, this paper reports several implementations and multi-disciplinary collaborative projects using the proposed framework, including a motion and colour-sensitive system, a sensor-based system for triggering musical events, and a distributed multimedia server for audio mapping of a real-time face tracker, and discusses different aspects of mapping strategies in their context.
Plausible future directions, developments and exploration with the proposed framework, including stage augmenta tion, virtual and augmented reality, which involve sensing and mapping of physical and non-physical changes onto multimedia control events, are discussed
Mutual statistics, braid group, and the fractional quantum Hall effect
We show that the notion of mutual statistics arises naturally from the
representation theory of the braid group over the multi-sheeted surface. A
Hamiltonian which describes particles moving on the double-sheeted surface is
proposed as a model for the bilayered fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE)
discovered recently. We explicitly show that the quasi-holes of the bilayered
Hall fluid display fractional mutual statistics. A model for 3-dimensional FQHE

Fostering the social utility of events: an integrative framework for the strategic use of events in community development
Although the use of planned events for achieving community development has received academic attention from different disciplines, the findings of these literatures are not systematically used towards developing a common understanding aimed at fostering their social utility. The challenge then is to study from an integrated interdisciplinary perspective how the social value of events can be fostered and leveraged for community development. In addressing this challenge, the purpose of this conceptual paper is to shed light on the multi-layered processes that foster the social utility of events. To this end, the theoretical tenets of social leverage, event dramaturgy and social capital are employed and integrated. On this basis, a conceptual framework linking event processes and outcomes is proposed aimed to guide future interdisciplinary research towards strategically incorporating events in community development. This line of research can eventually help create synergies between different event genres and implement joint social leveraging strategies, hence, fostering and magnifying their overall social utility for host communities
How did the discussion go: Discourse act classification in social media conversations
We propose a novel attention based hierarchical LSTM model to classify
discourse act sequences in social media conversations, aimed at mining data
from online discussion using textual meanings beyond sentence level. The very
uniqueness of the task is the complete categorization of possible pragmatic
roles in informal textual discussions, contrary to extraction of
question-answers, stance detection or sarcasm identification which are very
much role specific tasks. Early attempt was made on a Reddit discussion
dataset. We train our model on the same data, and present test results on two
different datasets, one from Reddit and one from Facebook. Our proposed model
outperformed the previous one in terms of domain independence; without using
platform-dependent structural features, our hierarchical LSTM with word
relevance attention mechanism achieved F1-scores of 71\% and 66\% respectively
to predict discourse roles of comments in Reddit and Facebook discussions.
Efficiency of recurrent and convolutional architectures in order to learn
discursive representation on the same task has been presented and analyzed,
with different word and comment embedding schemes. Our attention mechanism
enables us to inquire into relevance ordering of text segments according to
their roles in discourse. We present a human annotator experiment to unveil
important observations about modeling and data annotation. Equipped with our
text-based discourse identification model, we inquire into how heterogeneous
non-textual features like location, time, leaning of information etc. play
their roles in charaterizing online discussions on Facebook
Automated speech and audio analysis for semantic access to multimedia
The deployment and integration of audio processing tools can enhance the semantic annotation of multimedia content, and as a consequence, improve the effectiveness of conceptual access tools. This paper overviews the various ways in which automatic speech and audio analysis can contribute to increased granularity of automatically extracted metadata. A number of techniques will be presented, including the alignment of speech and text resources, large vocabulary speech recognition, key word spotting and speaker classification. The applicability of techniques will be discussed from a media crossing perspective. The added value of the techniques and their potential contribution to the content value chain will be illustrated by the description of two (complementary) demonstrators for browsing broadcast news archives
