    Optical techniques for 3D surface reconstruction in computer-assisted laparoscopic surgery

    One of the main challenges for computer-assisted surgery (CAS) is to determine the intra-opera- tive morphology and motion of soft-tissues. This information is prerequisite to the registration of multi-modal patient-specific data for enhancing the surgeon’s navigation capabilites by observ- ing beyond exposed tissue surfaces and for providing intelligent control of robotic-assisted in- struments. In minimally invasive surgery (MIS), optical techniques are an increasingly attractive approach for in vivo 3D reconstruction of the soft-tissue surface geometry. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art methods for optical intra-operative 3D reconstruction in laparoscopic surgery and discusses the technical challenges and future perspectives towards clinical translation. With the recent paradigm shift of surgical practice towards MIS and new developments in 3D opti- cal imaging, this is a timely discussion about technologies that could facilitate complex CAS procedures in dynamic and deformable anatomical regions

    A system for synthetic vision and augmented reality in future flight decks

    Rockwell Science Center is investigating novel human-computer interaction techniques for enhancing the situational awareness in future flight decks. One aspect is to provide intuitive displays that provide the vital information and the spatial awareness by augmenting the real world with an overlay of relevant information registered to the real world. Such Augmented Reality (AR) techniques can be employed during bad weather scenarios to permit flying in Visual Flight Rules (VFR) in conditions which would normally require Instrumental Flight Rules (IFR). These systems could easily be implemented on heads-up displays (HUD). The advantage of AR systems vs. purely synthetic vision (SV) systems is that the pilot can relate the information overlay to real objects in the world, whereas SV systems provide a constant virtual view, where inconsistencies can hardly be detected. The development of components for such a system led to a demonstrator implemented on a PC. A camera grabs video images which are overlaid with registered information. Orientation of the camera is obtained from an inclinometer and a magnetometer; position is acquired from GPS. In a possible implementation in an airplane, the on-board attitude information can be used for obtaining correct registration. If visibility is sufficient, computer vision modules can be used to fine-tune the registration by matching visual cues with database features. This technology would be especially useful for landing approaches. The current demonstrator provides a frame-rate of 15 fps, using a live video feed as background with an overlay of avionics symbology in the foreground. In addition, terrain rendering from a 1 arc sec. digital elevation model database can be overlaid to provide synthetic vision in case of limited visibility.     Advancements in multi-view processing for reconstruction, registration and visualization.

    The ever-increasing diffusion of digital cameras and the advancements in computer vision, image processing and storage capabilities have lead, in the latest years, to the wide diffusion of digital image collections. A set of digital images is usually referred as a multi-view images set when the pictures cover different views of the same physical object or location. In multi-view datasets, correlations between images are exploited in many different ways to increase our capability to gather enhanced understanding and information on a scene. For example, a collection can be enhanced leveraging on the camera position and orientation, or with information about the 3D structure of the scene. The range of applications of multi-view data is really wide, encompassing diverse fields such as image-based reconstruction, image-based localization, navigation of virtual environments, collective photographic retouching, computational photography, object recognition, etc. For all these reasons, the development of new algorithms to effectively create, process, and visualize this type of data is an active research trend. The thesis will present four different advancements related to different aspects of the multi-view data processing: - Image-based 3D reconstruction: we present a pre-processing algorithm, that is a special color-to-gray conversion. This was developed with the aim to improve the accuracy of image-based reconstruction algorithms. In particular, we show how different dense stereo matching results can be enhanced by application of a domain separation approach that pre-computes a single optimized numerical value for each image location. - Image-based appearance reconstruction: we present a multi-view processing algorithm, this can enhance the quality of the color transfer from multi-view images to a geo-referenced 3D model of a location of interest. The proposed approach computes virtual shadows and allows to automatically segment shadowed regions from the input images preventing to use those pixels in subsequent texture synthesis. - 2D to 3D registration: we present an unsupervised localization and registration system. This system can recognize a site that has been framed in a multi-view data and calibrate it on a pre-existing 3D representation. The system has a very high accuracy and it can validate the result in a completely unsupervised manner. The system accuracy is enough to seamlessly view input images correctly super-imposed on the 3D location of interest. - Visualization: we present PhotoCloud, a real-time client-server system for interactive exploration of high resolution 3D models and up to several thousand photographs aligned over this 3D data. PhotoCloud supports any 3D models that can be rendered in a depth-coherent way and arbitrary multi-view image collections. Moreover, it tolerates 2D-to-2D and 2D-to-3D misalignments, and it provides scalable visualization of generic integrated 2D and 3D datasets by exploiting data duality. A set of effective 3D navigation controls, tightly integrated with innovative thumbnail bars, enhances the user navigation. These advancements have been developed in tourism and cultural heritage application contexts, but they are not limited to these

    Towards multiple 3D bone surface identification and reconstruction using few 2D X-ray images for intraoperative applications

    This article discusses a possible method to use a small number, e.g. 5, of conventional 2D X-ray images to reconstruct multiple 3D bone surfaces intraoperatively. Each bone’s edge contours in X-ray images are automatically identified. Sparse 3D landmark points of each bone are automatically reconstructed by pairing the 2D X-ray images. The reconstructed landmark point distribution on a surface is approximately optimal covering main characteristics of the surface. A statistical shape model, dense point distribution model (DPDM), is then used to fit the reconstructed optimal landmarks vertices to reconstruct a full surface of each bone separately. The reconstructed surfaces can then be visualised and manipulated by surgeons or used by surgical robotic systems

    Anatomical landmark based registration of contrast enhanced T1-weighted MR images

    In many problems involving multiple image analysis, an im- age registration step is required. One such problem appears in brain tumor imaging, where baseline and follow-up image volumes from a tu- mor patient are often to-be compared. Nature of the registration for a change detection problem in brain tumor growth analysis is usually rigid or affine. Contrast enhanced T1-weighted MR images are widely used in clinical practice for monitoring brain tumors. Over this modality, con- tours of the active tumor cells and whole tumor borders and margins are visually enhanced. In this study, a new technique to register serial contrast enhanced T1 weighted MR images is presented. The proposed fully-automated method is based on five anatomical landmarks: eye balls, nose, confluence of sagittal sinus, and apex of superior sagittal sinus. Af- ter extraction of anatomical landmarks from fixed and moving volumes, an affine transformation is estimated by minimizing the sum of squared distances between the landmark coordinates. Final result is refined with a surface registration, which is based on head masks confined to the sur- face of the scalp, as well as to a plane constructed from three of the extracted features. The overall registration is not intensity based, and it depends only on the invariant structures. Validation studies using both synthetically transformed MRI data, and real MRI scans, which included several markers over the head of the patient were performed. In addition, comparison studies against manual landmarks marked by a radiologist, as well as against the results obtained from a typical mutual information based method were carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method
