    Modelling the Choice of Car Parks in Urban Areas and Managing the Demand for Parking.

    Car parks are an essential piece of infrastructure associated with the road networks, yet commonly available traffic assignment models do not to explicitly integrate them into the modelling process. This research attempts to integrate the choice of car parks in urban areas into the travellers’ route choice and incorporates both the route and car park choice in a joint modelling framework of traffic assignment based on equilibrium approach. This paper illustrates the implementation of the model in a commonly used standard suite of traffic assignment software. The proposed method considers multiple user classes - commuter and non-commuter flows, and involves modelling the demand for short stay and long stay car parks over multiple departure periods. A special search time delay function has been developed to represent the disutility in searching for a place in a car park, which is integrated further into the function of generalised cost of travel. This technique has been successfully applied to study the choice of car parks in the case of a simple hypothetical network. Another larger numerical example illustrates the case of managing the demand between two car parks in Leeds, England

    Macroscopic modelling and robust control of bi-modal multi-region urban road networks

    The paper concerns the integration of a bi-modal Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) modelling for mixed traffic in a robust control framework for congested single- and multi-region urban networks. The bi-modal MFD relates the accumulation of cars and buses and the outflow (or circulating flow) in homogeneous (both in the spatial distribution of congestion and the spatial mode mixture) bi-modal traffic networks. We introduce the composition of traffic in the network as a parameter that affects the shape of the bi-modal MFD. A linear parameter varying model with uncertain parameter the vehicle composition approximates the original nonlinear system of aggregated dynamics when it is near the equilibrium point for single- and multi-region cities governed by bi-modal MFDs. This model aims at designing a robust perimeter and boundary flow controller for single- and multi-region networks that guarantees robust regulation and stability, and thus smooth and efficient operations, given that vehicle composition is a slow time-varying parameter. The control gain of the robust controller is calculated off-line using convex optimisation. To evaluate the proposed scheme, an extensive simulation-based study for single- and multi-region networks is carried out. To this end, the heterogeneous network of San Francisco where buses and cars share the same infrastructure is partitioned into two homogeneous regions with different modes of composition. The proposed robust control is compared with an optimised pre-timed signal plan and a single-region perimeter control strategy. Results show that the proposed robust control can significantly: (i) reduce the overall congestion in the network; (ii) improve the traffic performance of buses in terms of travel delays and schedule reliability, and; (iii) avoid queues and gridlocks on critical paths of the network

    A Comparison of System Optimal and User Optimal Route Guidance.

    The work described in this paper (carried out under the EC `DRIVE' programme) extends the simulations described in Working Paper 315, with the aim of studying the likely benefits to and reactions of drivers to system optimal (SO) route guidance - in particular, these effects are compared with those obtained under user optimal (UE) guidance. The model used is again one of a multiple user class equilibrium assignment, so that equipped drivers may be directed to more than one route per origin-destination movement. UE and SO guidance are compared, at different levels of equipped vehicles and demand levels, on the basis of the number of routes they recommend and the similarity of the flows on these routes, as well as link-based properties such as actual flows and queues resulting. These serve to demonstrate the extent to which the routes recommended under UE guidance serve as proxies to those under SO guidance. Secondly, a comparison is made of average (dis)benefits to guided drivers as well as the excess travel time incurred by individual equipped drivers in following SO, as opposed to UE guidance, in order to determine the extent of user sub-optimality of SO routing. Thirdly, input from a parallel DRIVE project, investigating user reactions to guidance information, is used to infer the extent to which drivers are likely to accept the sub-optimality of SO guidance, and the factors which are likely to influence their acceptance. Finally, some preliminary analysis is performed on combined strategies, which aim to strike a balance between the system benefits of SO guidance and the user benefits of UE routing

    Dynamic Congestion and Tolls with Mobile Source Emission

    This paper proposes a dynamic congestion pricing model that takes into account mobile source emissions. We consider a tollable vehicular network where the users selfishly minimize their own travel costs, including travel time, early/late arrival penalties and tolls. On top of that, we assume that part of the network can be tolled by a central authority, whose objective is to minimize both total travel costs of road users and total emission on a network-wide level. The model is formulated as a mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPEC) problem and then reformulated as a mathematical program with complementarity constraints (MPCC). The MPCC is solved using a quadratic penalty-based gradient projection algorithm. A numerical study on a toy network illustrates the effectiveness of the tolling strategy and reveals a Braess-type paradox in the context of traffic-derived emission.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables.
