Discrete Event simulation (DES), mathematical programming (MP) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) are among the popular tools in operational research (OR) used in dynamic industry like petroleum industry. The integration of these methods even becomes more significant to managerial application in the industry. The objective of this thesis is to present an integrated decision support system by which a decision maker should be able to choose the optimal number of tanks, tank size and truck arrival rate to maximize average total profit and minimize the total transportation cost for an oil refinery terminal operations. The petroleum transportation management system (PTMS) is developed as a DSS using a discrete-event simulation program with ARENA software, mathematical linear programming (LP) with I-Log software and analysis of variance (ANOVA) with SPSS software, and these models are combined in complex program developed using visual basic software (VB). The simulation model represents the logistics operations from oil arriving to the refinery terminal to the supply points. The model process used as a decision support tool to help in evaluating and improving the comprehensive oil terminal operations. And also understanding and assessing of the different steps in a simulation process. An optimization model was formulated with the objective to minimize the total transportation cost. In the model formulation, hard constraints were considered and the linear programming (LP) technique was used. Result obtained suggests the use of certain types of trucks can reduce the operation costs, if compared to that of the current situation. The reduction of costs is due to the reduction of travelling trips as based on the problem constraints. Overall, output of this study has given positive impacts on the transportation operations. The effect of the changes can help the management of the transportation company to make efficient decisions. Multifactor ANOVA is used to determine whether different levels of the three-factors and their interactions significantly impact the oil refinery terminal's profit. ANOVA is also used to determine the flow rate of oil into the tanks station; tank and truck fill rate and a cost and revenue structure. The final step is to expand the model to cover the whole models (DES, LP and ANOVA) and create the integrated user interface. To sum up the combination of these techniques which allows evaluating the actual feasibility of supply planning considering all operations restrictions and variability of the supply logistics and the total transportation cost. In another words, a DSS have been developed to support a decision maker, who is planning to build a new facility or expand an existing oil refinery terminal, should be able to choose the optimal value for all important factors. The PTMS is able to predict with 99% confidence a set of factor levels that yields the highest average total profit

System Dynamics Modeling of Multi-Channel Supply Chain System: A Hypothetical LPG Distribution with Disloyal Household Customers

    Get PDF
The availability of LPG in the community is a sensitive issue. If there is a shortage, it has the potential to cause chaos and inflation. The final consumers, namely households and micro business stalls, will generally be disloyal. They are not tied to one particular store to get the LPG they need. Since the number of tanks in circulation will remain constant, the analysis of LPG availability can be focused on the number of tanks. Continuous simulation method with system dynamics is generally used in system growth analysis. In this paper the method is utilized to model the discrete movement of tanks circulating in the community which in this case is represented in a much smaller system, consisting of filling stations, agents, and stores. The modeling results provide a sufficient picture of how the availability of the tank can be optimized appropriately

Agent-based modelling of offshore upstream petroleum logistics

Faced with dwindling oil prices, the petroleum industry now needs to economize its operations. A case study of upstream petroleum logistics, the management of supplies to and from petroleum platforms and rigs, is used to describe current logistics and supply chain management (SCM) challenges facing these operations in Norway. The provided case narrative reveals how an integrated planning system used to co-ordinate operations is proven relatively difficult to implement and use. As alternative research approach agent-based modelling (ABM) is applied and discussed in association with actor network theory in a SCM business-functional setting to theoretically ground use of ABM as methodology. An empirically-grounded conceptual model, the first stage of ABM methodology, is created for petroleum logistics. Findings from this first stage of inquiry also suggest how and why ABM is applicable in petroleum logistics and SCM. Developing Model Of Closed Loop Supply Chain Network For Subsidized Lpg 3-Kgs In East Java-Indonesia

    Get PDF
Demand of subsidized LPG 3-kgs in Indonesia has been increasing since the Indonesian government imposed a conversion program from kerosene to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in 2007. The high increase in demand for subsidized LPG 3-kgs led to the scarcity of products availability. The design of a closed distribution system is required to ensure the availability of subsidized LPG 3-kgs. In this research, the development model of the integration of closed loop supply chain network and vehicle routing problem with simultaneous deliveries and pick-ups with time windows has been proposed. The mechanism of closed distribution system starts from the distributors send LPG empty tubes to filling stations. After filling station inspected and filled the LPG tubes, distributors delivered LPG 3-kgs subsidized from the filling station to some retailers. At the same time, the distributors take back the empty tubes from these retailers by considering the limitations of operational time in each retailers. The proposed model was tested on numerical example and analyzed the result

Eras of electric vehicles: electric mobility on the Verge. Focus Attention Scale

Daily or casual passenger vehicles in cities have negative burden on our finite world. Transport sector has been one of the main contributors to air pollution and energy depletion. Providing alternative means of transport is a promising strategy perceived by motor manufacturers and researchers. The paper presents the battery electric vehicles-BEVs bibliography that starts with the early eras of invention up till 2015 outlook. It gives a broad overview of BEV market and its technology in a chronological classification while sheds light on the stakeholders’ focus attentions in each stage, the so called, Focus-Attention-Scale-FAS. The attention given in each era is projected and parsed in a scale graph, which varies between micro, meso, and macro-scale. BEV-system is on the verge of experiencing massive growth; however, the system entails a variety of substantial challenges. Observations show the main issues of BEVsystem that require more attention followed by the authors’ recommendations towards an emerging market
