    WUB-IP : a high-precision UWB positioning scheme for indoor multi-user applications

    High-precision positioning scheme, an important part of the indoor navigation system, can be implemented using an ultra-wide band (UWB) based ranging system. Recently, solutions for precise positioning in dense multi-path and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) conditions have attracted a lot of attention in literature. On the other hand, it is expected that Waveform Division Multiple Access (WDMA) technology for multi-user UWB positioning application will be indispensable in the near future. In this regard, a WDMA-UWB based positioning scheme is investigated in this paper, for enhancing the performance of positioning accuracy in multi-user applications. In accordance with practical requirements of indoor positioning, we propose a new indoor positioning scheme, termed as WUB-IP. This scheme adopts WDMA for multiple access, and utilizes an entropy-based approach for the Time of Arrival (TOA) estimation. Moreover, a transfer learning approach is used for ranging error mitigation in NLOS conditions, in order to improve the positioning accuracy in NLOS conditions. System-level simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme enhances the performance of indoor positioning for multi-user applications

    Positioning and Sensing System Based on Impulse Radio Ultra-Wideband Technology

    Impulse Radio Ultra-Wideband (IR-UWB) is a wireless carrier communication technology using nanosecond non-sinusoidal narrow pulses to transmit data. Therefore, the IR-UWB signal has a high resolution in the time domain and is suitable for high-precision positioning or sensing systems in IIoT scenarios. This thesis designs and implements a high-precision positioning system and a contactless sensing system based on the high temporal resolution characteristics of IR-UWB technology. The feasibility of the two applications in the IIoT is evaluated, which provides a reference for human-machine-thing positioning and human-machine interaction sensing technology in large smart factories. By analyzing the commonly used positioning algorithms in IR-UWB systems, this thesis designs an IRUWB relative positioning system based on the time of flight algorithm. The system uses the IR-UWB transceiver modules to obtain the distance data and calculates the relative position between the two individuals through the proposed relative positioning algorithm. An improved algorithm is proposed to simplify the system hardware, reducing the three serial port modules used in the positioning system to one. Based on the time of flight algorithm, this thesis also implements a contactless gesture sensing system with IR-UWB. The IR-UWB signal is sparsified by downsampling, and then the feature information of the signal is obtained by level-crossing sampling. Finally, a spiking neural network is used as the recognition algorithm to classify hand gestures

    A Unified Multi-Functional Dynamic Spectrum Access Framework: Tutorial, Theory and Multi-GHz Wideband Testbed

    Dynamic spectrum access is a must-have ingredient for future sensors that are ideally cognitive. The goal of this paper is a tutorial treatment of wideband cognitive radio and radar—a convergence of (1) algorithms survey, (2) hardware platforms survey, (3) challenges for multi-function (radar/communications) multi-GHz front end, (4) compressed sensing for multi-GHz waveforms—revolutionary A/D, (5) machine learning for cognitive radio/radar, (6) quickest detection, and (7) overlay/underlay cognitive radio waveforms. One focus of this paper is to address the multi-GHz front end, which is the challenge for the next-generation cognitive sensors. The unifying theme of this paper is to spell out the convergence for cognitive radio, radar, and anti-jamming. Moore’s law drives the system functions into digital parts. From a system viewpoint, this paper gives the first comprehensive treatment for the functions and the challenges of this multi-function (wideband) system.     Channel Estimation and Information Symbol Detection for DS-UWB Communication Systems

    The UWB channel estimation and multiuser detection problem are investigated. The information symbol and channel parameter are considered as unknown variables. The multiuser detector and UWB channel estimator are designed jointly. For symbol detection, the one-step predictor of channel parameter is used and the estimation error is treated as a multiplicative noise; then a Riccati equation and a Lyapunov equation will be needed. If the transmitted symbols are uncorrelated and identically distributed random variables with zero mean and unit variance, only a Riccati equation needs to be solved. For UWB channel estimation, the one-step predictor of information symbol is used and the estimation error is also considered as a multiplicative noise. The solutions to the above two problems are obtained by solving a couple of Riccati equations together with two Lyapunov equations

    Managing Impulsive Interference in Impulse Radio UWB Networks

    Wireless sensor networks are ideally built on low-cost, low-complexity nodes that have a low power consumption to guarantee a long network lifetime. These are all properties that can potentially be achieved with impulse radio ultra-wide band (IR-UWB). In addition, IR-UWB has a fine timing resolution resulting in accurate ranging and localization possible. For all these reasons, IR-UWB is an extremely interesting physical layer technology for wireless sensor networks. In this article, we consider the management of impulsive interference in IR-UWB networks. Impulsive interference is due to uncoordinated concurrent transmissions. It occurs, for instance, when several independent piconets operate in close vicinity and is also present in some MAC layer proposals that allow concurrent transmissions. If not properly addressed, impulsive interference can severely affect the throughput and energy consumption of an IR-UWB network; as such, it already needs to be taken into account in the design phase. First, we show that impulsive interference is a serious concern for IR-UWB networks. Second, we present techniques at the physical layer and at the link layer to cope with and combat such interference efficiently.     Efficient DS-UWB MUD Algorithm Using Code Mapping and RVM

    A hybrid multiuser detection (MUD) using code mapping and a wrong code recognition based on relevance vector machine (RVM) for direct sequence ultra wide band (DS-UWB) system is developed to cope with the multiple access interference (MAI) and the computational efficiency. A new MAI suppression mechanism is studied in the following steps: firstly, code mapping, an optimal decision function, is constructed and the output candidate code of the matched filter is mapped to a feature space by the function. In the feature space, simulation results show that the error codes caused by MAI and the single user mapped codes can be classified by a threshold which is related to SNR of the receiver. Then, on the base of code mapping, use RVM to distinguish the wrong codes from the right ones and finally correct them. Compared with the traditional MUD approaches, the proposed method can considerably improve the bit error ratio (BER) performance due to its special MAI suppression mechanism. Simulation results also show that the proposed method can approximately achieve the BER performance of optimal multiuser detection (OMD) and the computational complexity approximately equals the matched filter. Moreover, the proposed method is less sensitive to the number of users

    Study of the cyclostationarity properties of various signals of opportunity

    Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) offer precise position estimation and navigation services outdoor but they are rarely accessible in strong multipath environments, such as indoor environments. Fortunately, several Signals of Opportunity (SoO), (such as RFID, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, digital TV signals, etc.) are readily available in these environments, creating an opportunity for seamless positioning. Performance evolution of positioning can be achieved through contextual exploitation of SoO. The detection and identification of available SoO signals or of the signals which are most relevant to localization and the signal selection in an optimum way, according to designer defined optimality criteria, are important stages to enter such contextual awareness domain. Man-made modulated signals have certain properties which vary periodically in time and this time-varying periodical characteristics trigger what is known as cyclostationarity. Cyclostationarity analysis can be used, among others, as a tool for signal detection. Detected signals through cyclostationary features can be exploited as SoO. The main purpose of this thesis is to study and analyze the cyclostationarity properties of various SoO. An additional goal is to investigate whether such cyclostationarity properties can be used to detect, identify and distinguish the signals which are present in a certain frequency band. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the literature review part, the physical layer study of several signals is given, by emphasizing the potential of SoO in positioning. In the implementation part, the possibility of signals detection through cyclostationary features is investigated through MATLAB simulations. Cyclostationary properties obtained through FFT accumulation Method (FAM) and statistical performance of detection are studied in the presence of stationary additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). Besides that, the performance in signal detection using cyclostationary-based detector is also compared to the performance with the energy-based detectors, used as benchmarks. The simulated result suggest that cyclostationary features can certainly detect the presence of signals in noise, but simple cases, such as one type of signal only and AWGN noise, are better addressed via traditional energy-based detection. However, cyclostationary features can exhibit advantages in other types of noises and in the presence of signal mixtures which in fact may fulfil one of the preliminary requirements of cognitive positioning

    Wireless systems are commonly affected by interference from various sources. For example, a number of users that operate in the same wireless network can result in multiple-access interference (MAI). In addition, for ultrawideband (UWB) systems, which operate at very low power spectral densities, strong narrowband interference (NBI) can have significant effects on the communications reliability. Therefore, interference mitigation and awareness are crucial in order to realize reliable communications systems. In this chapter, pulse-based UWB systems are considered, and the mitigation of MAI is investigated first. Then, NBI avoidance and cancelation are studied for UWB systems. Finally, interference awareness is discussed for short-rate communications, next-generation wireless networks, and cognitive radios.Mitigation of multiple-access interference (MAI)In an impulse radio ultrawideband (IR-UWB) communications system, pulses with very short durations, commonly less than one nanosecond, are transmitted with a low-duty cycle, and information is carried by the positions or the polarities of pulses [1-5]. Each pulse resides in an interval called frame, and the positions of pulses within frames are determined according to time-hopping (TH) sequences specific to each user. The low-duty cycle structure together with TH sequences provide a multiple-access capability for IR-UWB systems [6].Although IR-UWB systems can theoretically accommodate a large number of users in a multiple-access environment [2, 4], advanced signal processing techniques are necessary in practice in order to mitigate the effects of interfering users on the detection of information symbols efficiently [6]. © Cambridge University Press 2011
